A Young Adult Novel that is richly entertaining and offers a strong fiber of lessons

THE LAND OF WHOO is that rare breed of novels for youngsters that is able to challenge the imagination, relate a fascinating and original story, and open a few vistas of hope and expectations for a kind of life that we hope will be a art of the future dreams of the readers. Ryan OBrien is apparently new to this medium and if this book (gratefully labeled Volume 1) is an indicator of his success in a new venture,

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

My Summary: On the morning he wakes up from a mysterious dream, Michael Henry knows things are going to change. In his dream, a 7-foot-tall genie-like figure told him he was The Chosen One. And it's not long before Michael learns what exactly that entails: he can cross through the portal into the Land of Whoo - a place where he'll discover the answers to all his questions about his past.

What parent or teacher doesn’t want to see positive character qualities in their children or students? As I read this book I immediately thought of the IB (International Baccalaureate) Learner Profiles we teach in my IB school. We teach them that they should be caring, balanced, risk-takers, reflective, knowledgeable, thinkers, principled, open-minded, inquirers and communicators. As I read this book I found that it had all of those qualities throughout.

The Land of Whoo is a good middle grade fiction, not too far from ideas we find within The Chronicles of Narnia. The Land of Whoo reminded me a lot of Oz. I felt like this book was a contemporary of several books many of us in our mid-twenties and beyond grew up with. The book moves quickly and the plot sets pace within the first chapter, enchanting us with the mystery of Whoo and what it holds for our hero and heroine.

This is the first novel by author Ryan O'Brien.
He's started with a stunner!

The Land of Whoo is the story of young Michael Henry. "The Chosen One" He travels through a portal into the mysterious "Land of Whoo". As you can imagine, all sorts of adventures await Michael.

The character of Michael will appeal to all middle graders, especially boys. Let's face it, it's sometimes difficult to find a book middle grade boys will enjoy. I think THE LAND OF WHOO is a perfect book. It will hold the readers
