Nikolai Gogol's "The Portrait" is a short story about art. First written in 1835 and then significantly revised in 1842, the work explores a central concern in Romantic aesthetics: the role of the artist and his creation. Through a series of ekphrases, i.e. literary representations of visual art, the narrative of "The Portrait" examines the act of representational painting ...more

No dia seguinte, milagrosamente descobre milhares

An incredibly well told story, the eyes in the picture take us through two generations and countless drama provoked by a magic painting... The book is not only a brilliantly written story, but also a reflection and art, ethics and purity of intentions. The end is unexpected and matches the richness and beauty of the story, and the Russian atmosphere to it makes it all the more exotic.

i absolutely love russian/ ucranian authors, it seems they have a common way to express their emotions and it seems they are apart from every emotion you know.. i don't know how to explain but those are the true existentialists

really captivating short storie

"The Mysterious Portrait" by Gogol feels most fundamental to a study of the devil in portraiture. Gogol hinges his short story upon many almost-universal topoi, found in related works such as Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, Balzac's "The Unfinished Masterpiece," Poe's "The Oval Portrait," Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables, Stevenson's "Markheim," and even Faulkner's "Evangeline" (to only name a small handful that come to mind).

The beauty of the portrait is that an author/artist can p

Brilliant, simply Brilliant, it's amazing!!

Russian Writers are masters on writing stories that can easily cross your view and make your imagination work. They also make the story so perfect that it's so so easy to transport them to the stage. If you study performative arts and want a simple and yet a big idea for a project, this is a good way to start.

Gogol takes you on a journey between what makes other people enjoy your job and most importantly, what make you enjoy your job, your own works of

It was the first time I read Gogol ... and ended up falling in love
I really love this history and advise the reading of this one. Gogol is a very good writer.
Talvez...
Duas histórias intrigantes, a escrita desperta no leitor a vontade quase irresistível de continuar a ler.
