The Devil's Whisper is a novel that wants to be more than a mystery novel. And sometimes it succeeds.

Actually, taken as a straight up mystery, it's a pretty poor example of the genre. There aren't really any clues and the only way one could come to expect the conclusion to the matter is if one is given to predicting the outlandish. So it's fortunate that Miyabe's novel wants to be something other than simple detective fiction. It's kind of like Murakami's Wind-Up Bird Chronicle in that—save for...more

The Devil’s Whisper (2007) [translation of Majutsu wa sasayaku:] is a non-series novel from 1989 by “Japan’s #1 Bestselling Mystery Writer” which follows teenager Mamoru Kusaka as he tries to exonerate his uncle Taizo, a Tokyo taxi driver being held for running over and killing a young woman late one night. In spare and unrelenting prose, the author weaves several threads together, as links are discovered between the deaths of several other young women originally classed as suicides. Mamoru has...more

This is a very good book. I couldn't put it down and ended up not going to sleep until 4:30am. The "cause" of the deaths is a little bit far-fetched, but it's handled in such a great way that the plausibility factor didn't bother me in the least. I'm definitely going to check out more of her work; too bad none of it is available on Kindle.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I used to have this notion that a book under 250 pages wasn't worth reading and I was just confirmed in that notion by another mystery book by another author when I read this book. I was intrigued by the mystery and threads of the plot. Would very much like to read more by this author.

the second mystery i've read by this author, very good. Interesting social and psychological insights into modern japanese (in tokyo) culture, interesting characters. The mystery itself is a little clunky but still interesting.

For me, this book was a quick, enjoyable read. Certain plot points seemed to be a bit of a stretch, but this was not too difficult for me to overlook. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more by Miyabe.

...

Tapi eniwei, buku yang berlatar di akhir dekade 80an ini (karena emang diterbitinnya pas zaman it...more

Three women are murdered in quick succession. The only thing they have in common is that they are all featured in the same magazine article…wait a minute, does this sound familiar? Yeah, weirdly, this mystery’s plot is (initially) very similar to that of In Your Face. (They even each feature a death by pushed-in-front-of-a-train!) I don’t think there’s any significance to this; it’s just odd that I should choose to read these two books, for two entirely different reasons, within about a week of...more

Kisahnya ttg penyelidikan Mamoru, pemuda 16 tahun yg baru kelas 2 SMU, yang ingin membersihkan nama pamannya yg dituduh menabrak mati seorang gadis muda. Endingnya bagus, meskipun tidak istimewa....more

I really hoped this book would be amazing, mainly because I brought it in Disney World and I like all things that I associate with it to be amazing. It wasn't :( It was okay. A very average crime/mystrey. I might have liked it more if I hadn't read Dean Koontz's False Memory earlier this year. Which was a much better book about murders commited by hypnotists. There was a point when I thought I had been really clever and guessed the plot(this never happens to me even in the most obvious of books)...more

Kisah kejahatannya sangat sulit...more

A rather multilayered book, I read it very fast (granted, the period involved a long night flight) and the story was gripping enough to keep the pages turning. Initially, it seems that the story is somewhat scattered and goes into a number of directions, but at the end Miyabe brings all the strands together, some in more credible ways than others. Miyabe writes well, in an uncomplicated way, and always explores psychological and moral issues (this the third book by her that I've read). She is qu...more

Miyabe's plot is a bit more complicated, and unfortunately that's one reason much of it feels quite forced, as if she had a bunch of ideas and then wrote her story around them. Miyabe’s characters are interesting; but, unfortunately, none of them are so interesting that I want to know every thought that passes through their minds.

Personal identity is strictly controlled in Japan, family registers keeping careful track of them. The book plods along in places, and the attempts to explain many of...more

Mildly enjoyable, but thin read about a young boy trying to prove his Uncle's innocence after a girl runs out in front of his cab and killed. The writing is curt and efficent, but the story is derivative with few surprises. The big reveals are ones we've seen a million times on TV and thus has little impact. Most mysteries showcase a truly unique character working judiciously to solve his/her case, but this one comes very easy to our teen protagonist. The interesting element is how the social im...more

Recommends it for: Mystery readers, young adults (especially those interested in Japan)
Set in Japan during the late 1980s, this mystery follows sixteen year old Mamoru Kusaka as he investigates the death of a young woman struck by his uncle's taxi. Intent on proving his uncle's innocence, Mamoru discovers that the woman was linked to two other alleged suicide victims. As he begins to unravel the details behind these murders/suicides, Mamoru is thrown off guard when the killer contacts him.

Really liked the protagonist and had tons of fun side characters. The big reveal of how peop...more

Despite the chapters being a bit discouraging personally, it was worth the build up and frustration. It is also a bit slow paced and uninteresting in places, but if you're a committed reader, you will not be disappointed. This a bit of a murder/suicide mystery that'll keep you asking questions. These questions will probably fuel your curiousity and determination to keep reading. Aside from the chapter length, I did get a few of the characters mixed up, but I liked that they were listed in the fr...more

A decent mystery, and exploration of subliminal advertising and hypnotism. However, other than the names, this story could have been set anywhere. There was little to make it a Japanese story. I would have liked to have had more than noodles and soup for breakfast to let us know it was a different place (from my own small town America), a different way of life.

A boy still suffering the effects of his father's theft and abandonment investigates the mysterious deaths of three women, apparently unconnected and all apparently suicides. Scariest and most moving where it becomes a question of what the righteous will do to punish injuries.

Her best book is still All She Was Worth; start there.

I read this book so that I could review if for customers at work. I really now understand the effects of a bad translation. So badly translated/written. It does give a peak into Japanese society which is interesting. But there are probably other books that cad do that as well and be better reads

Much more tightly structured and faster-paced than "All She Was Worth," this book is gripping, haunting, and very well executed. A highly satisfying read - looking forward to reading more from Miyabe; it's a shame so little of her work has managed to find its way into English translation...
