Tonya Cannariato (Goodreads Author)
**It's a simple formula: Magical power equals political power…**
Sparks are flying between researcher Anne Crosby and no less than nine men--but it's not what you think. Whenever these nine amnesiacs touch anyone, electrical mayhem results. More surprising: all of them have dust instead of blood in their veins, even though they're quite alive. It's Anne's job to track down...more

Big Thanks to Tonya Cannariato for giving me this ebook to review.

Anne Crosby is a researcher, sent to Russia by a rich and erratic boss to look into dragons, of all things. Anne is understandably cynical, until she and her research assistant discover the existence of nine orphans who confess to have few memories of their past, and oh....bleed dust instead of blood. Romance and destiny are in the air when Anne feels a strange, alluring connection to one of the orphans.
She recommits to finding the truth about the dragons, but she's not alone in her quest. The K...more

My penname was given this book as a thank you. I wanted to review it on this account though because I want to relate it to another book I've read recently. The Prodigal's Foole is similar to Dust to Blood. Both find magic in a religious/political framework. Dust to Blood is a tad slow out of the gates and seems to jump very abruptly into the magic from a scientific pursuit. However, it is also engaging and frames itself very well in Russia, the Ukraine and Kazakh. None of these are areas I'm fam...more

This book started off like a snowball in early fall only to roll faster and faster till I was unable to stop reading it. It had several things that were a must for me and one of the big ones? Location, Location, Location... Russia, particulary Ekaterinburg where Tsar Nicholas II's family was murdered during the Bolshevik Revolution. One of my favorite romantic notions is that Anastasia, his daughter, was still alive and not one of the murdered family members so much so I wanted to name my first...more
I thought this idea was great, but the book was really slow in the beginning. But when it got good, it really got good! Amazing! The trouble was that so much of the action in the first 50% or so felt really “telling” instead of “showing” or letting the reader experience it firsthand. So I always felt kept at a distance while the events happening felt like a dispassionate describing. When the action picked up again at the end I was on the edge of my seat and loving every second of it. If the next...more
When Anne's boss sends her to Russia to look into mysterious goings on, she assumes it's just another routine assignment. She soon discovers there's secrets to be uncovered, but it's hard to get to the truth when the KGB is following your every move. This novel gives a great insight into a place not many have visited, and the author gives us a real sense of where her characters are - in a still oppressed, but wildly beautiful country. Add to that mystery and danger and you have a great read with...more
This book had what could possibly be the most captivating beginnings I’ve read in any book. When Anne Crosby travels to Moscow to meet with a strange group of people, what they show her made my eyebrows shoot up and think, “well, this is something new!” I eagerly dove in, only to find that the exciting beginning gave way to a less fantastical middle, where the book’s tone took a much slower change for me. I really wanted to read more about the Ivans, and see what this mysterious group of amnesia...more
Dust to Blood is about a researcher from Chicago named Anne who takes a job in Russia. Once there she joins up with an interesting group of characters to try to figure out where a group of amnesiacs originated. Along the way they are hunted by the KGB and fear for their lives. Why are they after them? What is so special about this group of feral orphans, and what is their connection to Anne? I won’t tell you, you have to read it yourself. But the answer will amaze you!! I was hoping the book wou...more

Chicago-based researcher Anne Crosby is sent to Moscow to investigate rumours of dragons. Her contact Igor introduces her to three Ivans, three Vassilys and three Fyodors, who have no memories of their past, and dust in their veins instead of blood. Anne has to avoid suspicious people watching her, while travelling to other parts of the countries and making friends with Olga, a librarian and ex-KGB trainee.

I have mixed feelings on this book. On the plus side the premise is AMAZING and has so much potential to be something really special! It is unique and imaginative, but familiar enough that the reader doesn’t feel totally blindsided. My problem was with the way Anne thought (spoke). I thought her narration was way too stiff and formal and some of the big words were oddly out of place. Like, she didn’t sound like a normal person most of the time, even if she was supposed to be smart, so it was rea...more
Anne Crosby is an American researcher from Chicago who is sent to Moscow to investigate why, all of a sudden, nine orphans with no memories of their childhood, and who all look unusual and strikingly similar, suddenly appear. That’s not the only strange thing about them…their touch is electric and their blood is dust (hence the title of the book). Anne sets of on a dangerous and unpredictable mission with some new alliances and friends to unravel the truth about these special creatures. And what...more
I admit I had a hard time getting into this book at first. It’s really different than a lot of books I’d read, and it’s hard to describe it exactly. On one hand, it feels like a political spy/action thriller (sort of). On another, it’s a sweet romance. And on another hand (is that 3?) it’s this wildly original fantasy that throws the stereotypical dragon mythology and lore right out the window. Put them all together and you have a helluva read, although it isn’t without its faults. As I said, I...more
Dust to Blood is the first book I’ve read by Tonya Cannariato, but I can promise you it won’t be the last (if she continues to write, that is!). I really liked her writing style, and it is obvious she is really smart. I appreciated that the author didn’t talk down to her audience the way so many seem to do, instead she assumes that the reader has a brain in his/her head and writes accordingly. Having the book set in the Russian countryside and Moscow gave it an old-world feel that lended to the...more
What a cool beginning to what promises to be an AWESOME series! It’s hard to write about this novel without giving away what I think is the big plot twist (I didn’t see it in the descriptions anywhere, so I don’t want to ruin anything for anybody), but I absolutely LOVE the idea behind this book! There are hardly any books out there right now that is like this one, (that I know of), and I think it could totally be the next big thing in fantasy/paranormal. I’m really excited to see where this ser...more
Okay, I need the next book NOW!!! This ending was the biggest cliffhanger EVER and I cannot WAIT to see what happens next! This will be a series, right? Because let me just say that the Anne at the END of the book was a million times better and more interesting that the Anne at the beginning (and most of the middle). I see this story going in so many amazing directions, and I really like Anne and Ivan…especially Ivan! The mythology was really original and captured my attention (I especially like...more
I read this book in one sitting! The descriptions of Russia and the lands were really good and make you feel like you are there. You can tell the author really did her research! I love books in foreign lands and liked how the author wrote the political landscape and Russian history and governmental officials into the storyline. It’s a really fast read and not too long. I was so curious to see what would happen I was flipping my Kindle pages as fast as I possibly could! The ending was AMAZING! I...more

A voracious reader since she was a toddler, and an ordained spiritualist, Tonya Cannariato has now presided over the marriage of her love of reading and her love of writing. She’s lived a nomadic life, following first her parents in their Foreign Service career through Africa, Europe, and Asia, and then her own nose criss-crossing America as she’s gotten old enough to make those choices for hersel...more
