This is the one which starts with a collection of shoes with feet in them lined up outside London's Highgate cemetery as if the feet are waiting to get in. Adamsberg and Danglard are there for a conference and see this spectacle. As soon as they get back to France there is one of the most grisly murder scenes ever, which ultimately is connected to the feet. The doctor with amazing physio powers was locked up at the end of this book.(less)

Recommends it for: fans of the series, people who like their crime on the lighter side
Super book, on the shortlist for this year's International Crime Dagger award.

as always, my overly-wordy self got the better of me, so if you want a longer version of this discussion, you can find it here -- otherwise, here's the shorter one:

As our hero Adamsberg is pondering the strange case of a man who killed his wife with breadcrumbs, a woman from Ordebec, a small town in Normandy, comes to him with an even stranger tale, prefaced with the words "People are going to die." He has to pry the

As this latest book from Fred Vargas already has over 100 reviews, I'll only say that it's an excellent addition to the Adamsberg series. All the usual elements are there: the slight, persistent suggestion of supernatural forces, the likeable members of Adamsberg's team, each with his or her distinguishing quirk, a Gallic playfulness with words and themes, a solicitous love for animals (in this story a mistreated pigeon and a hound who loves sugar), and a genuine affection for its curious cast o ...more

THE GHOST RIDERS OF ORDEBEC. (2013). Fred Vargas. **.
About two-thirds of the way through this most recent Commissaire Adamsberg mystery, I looked at myself (always keep a mirror handy) and said: “This is incredibly boring.” Although Vargas’s characterizations continue to delight, the plot line was getting more and more far-fetched. Some of the other clues (aside from looking at oneself) are flipping ahead to see how many pages are left in the current chapter and flipping to the end to see the to

I have never read any other Commissaire Adamsberg mysteries, though Goodreads tells me that this is the ninth (!) book in the series. I also have very, very little familiarity with the mystery genre. But I had loads of fun reading this book and I got rather attached to its weird cast of characters. At first glance they seem almost too eccentric: Adamsberg's crack team is made up of a narcoleptic, an intellectual who spontaneously comments on the situation in rhyming verse, an intellectual who's ...more

Marvelous! So much more than a suspense novel, though there's plenty of suspense in it. But the character! Oh, the wonderful characters! Adamsberg, the protagonist, is intellectually-humble, though he has every reason not to be. He is a humanist, who accepts everyone as they are, and knows how to take advantage even of their disadvantages, for everyone's benefit, not just his own. He has nothing stereotypical about him, and feels like a living human being. The plot was fantastic too. I will be r ...more

The combination of murder mystery and magical thinking is intriguing in Vargas's novels. The first I read, Wash This Blood Clean From My Hand, took place partly near my old stomping grounds of Ottawa, and around Pink Lake where I had many picnics and summer afternoons, as well as environmental field trips due to it's interesting ecology. The odd police commissaire Adamsberg, with his combination of sharp insightful police thinking and his flexible changing connections with both another world and ...more

Sometimes it takes a while to get to the right place in order to appreciate the best things. Fred Vargas is an internationally acclaimed mystery writer. I have read three or four of the books in her Commissaire Adamsberg series, but I admit to having a problem enjoying the Vargas approach. Until now. With The Ghost Riders of Ordebec, the 9th book in the series, I finally understand how to connect with Fred.

I'm always enjoying Vargas' mysteries although I like some of the Adamsberg books better than others. The Ghost Riders fell into the others category for me. I liked the mythical riders (sort of like the Wild Hunt but French-style) but the book felt too busy cramming in multiple murders that didn't really tie together all that well. In the beginning you have the wife-killing husband as a sort of aperitif, then you get a taste for the Ordebec mystery that is then derailed by the murder of a promin ...more

Cara, cara Fred Vargas.

I can see why some Goodreads reviewers thought this book was boring--if you're not on the author's wavelength, the humor might be invisible and the narrative might seem rambling. But I enjoyed the quirky Commissaire Adamsberg, whose mind is compared to a net full of slippery, wiggling fish, who works in Paris but was born in the Pyrenees, and who describes himself as "a peasant, a mountain dweller and cloud shoveller"--the polar opposite of Sherlock Holmes. He is surrounded by an equally quirky ...more

Over the past couple of decades, French author Fred Vargas (real name Frédérique Audoin-Rouzeau) has emerged as one of the leading international writers of crime fiction, thanks to her two sets of novels featuring, respectively, the reluctant amateur sleuths known as "The Three Evangelists" and Commissaire Adamsberg and his team of Paris detectives.

This is the last book in the Commissaire Adamsberg series, and I've now read the entire series. I like Vargas' writing, and I find myself wanting to like the books, but in each, there's at least one major flaw I just can't get past. Either the quirky characters become too quirky, or the plot devices run over the top and crash. In this book, for the second time in the series of nine, Vargas uses a fantasy/superstition to motivate the crimes. Now I grant that Vargas is also a professional historia ...more

It's been a few years since I have read an Adamsberg mystery and oh how I have missed them/him. I am less enamoured of Louise Penny now. The book in which she ended Gamache's official career had a fast-paced plot but was so sentimental and tied it all up with a bow at the end. The next book felt sentimental too I think. Anyway I have missed Fred Vargas' writing.

A bit more complicated than the other Vargas books that I have read: Ghost Riders solves multiple crimes. As in her other mysteries, another house is filled with different (meaning weird) personalities. The Middle Ages erupt again bringing death. Old crimes fester as usual. And Commissaire Adamsberg is lost in the clouds as usual, but this time fascinated by one suspect’s breasts ("good enough to eat," he thinks).
