Gregorio “Ori” Reyes and Kalani Lihilihi have known each other since childhood. Although they were always very close, Ori left home to serve in the Iraq war before either man had a chance to explore the strong feelings growing between them.
A vicious hate crime leaves Kalani’s body comatose in the hospital while his spirit wanders freely. Ori was dishonorably discharged from the military and served some time in prison. He returns to his home in Hawaii, disconsolate and penniless, blaming PTSD fo...more

Hawaiian Gothic is an amazing read. It’s a true breath of fresh air into our m/m genre. I’ll admit that the book and I turned out to have one of those lucky almost-across-the-board matchups between a reader’s interests and a novel’s themes:
I mean, mixed martial arts? (I’m a more of a die-hard "Golden Age of Boxing" fan -- as in Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Leonard, and Duran -- but, yeah, why not? Bring it on!)
Hawaii? (One of the most beautiful places on earth.)

This was a disaster waiting to happen but silly me ignored the red flags....
My fault - and Val`s of course! Her review here...
Shiny new book, a five star review from a trusted reviewer that made it sound like Hawaiian Gothic is the book of the year (yes, why not, maybe...if you like that kind of stuff....*coughs*).....and curiosity killed the cat...!
I should have been warned - red flags the size of a high-rise!

The title of Violetta Vane and Heidi Belleau 's new novel may first conjure up images of leis and scowly-faced tiki gods , but Hawaiian Gothic is not a book of kitschy pop culture design or the stereotypes that immediately come to mind when one thinks of a story with a Hawaiian backdrop. And no, I wasn't expecting a light-hearted, laid-back tale of two guys who fall in love while hanging ten-- any self-respecting English major knows that "gothic lit" means something very different than common no...more

Rather surreal, but that may have been from all of the time jumping and my unfamiliarity with Hawaiian legend. Felt more like watching a movie than reading a book, although I don't think I'd call it cinematic. It's still a good story, and I probably would have enjoyed it even more if the POV hadn't been so limited. I liked the characters, even if Ori comes across as a bit whiny for my tastes. Kalani's a treat though, and I like his strength. And of course I liked the ending, and I actually would...more

This novel reminded me of a very nice movie, Undertow, with a tragic ending, and so I was reading it teetering on the edge of fear, wanting to like these characters but afraid of what would be of them. Lucky for me, this is a romance, and of course, although non-conventional and not even totally rounded, there was a some sort of happily ever after for them.

Hawaiian Gothic by Heidi Belleau and Violetta Vane is another strikingly original story in the gay romance genre. It may pose a challenge for traditionalists in that it does not offer a linear story structure that allows you to spend time on the evolution of the heroes’ romantic relationship. Instead, you get numerous short flashbacks interspersed through the present that illustrate our hero’s seemingly one-sided attraction to his best friend. But the shifts in time are clearly labeled and easy...more
SlashReader: I think what struck me the most was the originality in the idea behind this story. I loved the blending of Hawaiian mythology with the modern world. I liked the fact that this ghost story was a combination of so many ideas and culture. I think for me that was the most exciting part about reading this book was to see how all the different elements would play together.

I love the voice that these authors bring to their work. It is deeply human and lyrical. Even when writing about dark things and the supernatural there is a care for Ori and Kalani as suffering people. They are not merely characters whose lives are lived for the vicarious thrill of the reader.

There’s nothing I love more, in terms of fiction, than the surprise of a book turning out to be something so much more than I’d expected it would be when I started reading it. Sometimes it’s the characters who are a revelation. Sometimes it’s the story itself. With Hawaiian Gothic it was both, and it was terrific.

Lately, I'm beginning to find that books some folks on GR rate are ALOT lower than they should be. This book, in every way, in every facet of my mind, deserved a five.
There is mythology, yes, but most people understand that Hawaii is known for a bit of folklore (Rocket Power, anyone?). It was to be expected, personally, considering soon on in the book we find that Kalani is not quite human. I was able to immediately connect that fact with the little to no previous knowledge I had about Hawaiian...more

A beautifully written, complex story that combines mystery, drama, mysticism and romance. Set in Hawaii, this book tells the tale of Ori, who grew up loving his best friend Kalani. The kind of love he wants is unreturned though, and Ori goes away to war in Iraq. After serving a few years he finds out Kalani has been viciously attacked and is near death. Distraught, he strikes a superior officer and is imprisoned for a year before being given a dishonourable discharge. All this time Kalani has be...more
Things I liked:
--I liked both main characters, which is a big compliment because so often I don't
--I believed in their love
--the ending before the epilogue (which was a fine epilogue) but I preferred the less than picture-perfect scene painted before
Things I was mixed on:
--the story was muddled with too much going on all at once. Part detective story, part family drama, part coming out, part military, part surfing, part wrestling, part unrequited, part childhood memories, part parents' stories,...more

This was an unusual story. One tough to categorize. It's a love story and a ghost story. It's about loyalty and sacrifice, yearning and hope. It's got mystery, mythology, emotion and sensuality. I'm not sure I've read anything quite like it.
As the story begins, Ori is on his way back home to Hawaii after spending the past three years in the army and in military prison. He's been dishonorably discharged and has no idea what he is going to do with his future. The only thing he knows for s...more

Overall
A wonderfully refreshing story that breaks out of the mold of standard romance while still keeping one foot in the contemporary. Although Hawaiian mythos is heavily used, the authors did an excellent job of providing the reader with the necessary information and keeping the reader comfortable--if not knowledgeable--with what is happening. A mix of a heart-breaking plot, an innovative setting and hobbies, and realistic characters makes this definitely worth a read, especially f...more

I really, really loved this book.
I'm not a romantic, so when this little novel popped up, promising Hawaiian Gothic... hello nurse! And hot men, and adventure? I'm sold.
HG is firmly set in urban fantasy-land while also being properly being anchored in reality, and Hawaii no less! This is the story of Ori and Kalani, childhood best friends. Ori knows he’s in love with Kalani but believes that Kalani can never feel the same way about him. This is not a romance but it is very erotic. Ori and Kalani take a journey into the netherworld of Hawaiian culture and mythology together and separately.
This is the tale of a nightmare that isn’t a horror story but rather a revelation. I enjoyed the story very much but because the timeline is far from linear it isn’t an easy read. I am going to honestly write, that I do not have the freaking words to describe this book. I am huge fan of horror and crazy, since my mom had me watching Twilight Zone at four. The book isn’t scary in a ‘there’s a boogeyman in the closet’. The fear lies within the risks one is willing to take for the person they love, because sometimes it can be bad things, it can be good things, and it can be great things.

Such a beautifully strange story we have in Hawaiian Gothic - a cross-cultural, coming-out, romantic ghost-story. Weave all those threads together, and what you really have is a classic quest tale, one in which friends must brave unknown terrors and unimaginable odds in order to not only save a life, but realize a long-suppressed love.

This is a story that turned out to be a lot more complex than it first appeared. We enter the story at a point where Ori has returned to Hawaii as his best friend, Kalani, lies in a coma, victim of an horrific hate crime. The story is told in the present and through a series of flashbacks and very cleverly, things in the present become clearer as important parts of the past are revealed. Ori and Kalani have always been incredibly close but have never revealed their deepest feelings to each other...more

marked it as never-to-buy-or-read
1) because of a no-rating by a friend, a non-native language as I.
2) because of a review stating BDSM and horror mixed with dark/urban fantasy, that too much genre for me, I am a simple girl.
3) because to read two so far apart reviews means to hate or to adore and I am a strictly no reader of manicheism in fiction
4) I do not exclude changing my mind in the future... when I am finished reading all the book on stand-by in my virtual and physical libraries and possibly public libraries also.

This was such a creative and unique story with two lovable characters. Ori and Kalani were just made for each other and I really wanted to see more of their "present" life. The flashbacks and backstory did throw me out of the story a few times. These are both new authors for me and I look forward to reading their other worksl
