I am so impressed with this book. Ryan Sallans begins his life as a female named Kim. Kim is labeled a tomboy. Kim never identifies with her female self. Even when her father calls Kim 'princess' it's more a slander than a term of endearment to her ears. Kim is the child who wants to BE Superman, and there is no room in Superman's life for frills and dresses.

The book investigates Ryan's thoughts and experiences from childhood through adolescence, as a female. Ryan shares his revulsion toward his...more

I found this story to be really inspiring. I did not know much about transgender issues until the author of this book, Ryan Sallans, came to speak at my school. I was able to talk to him in person and his story is very touching. I am giving his book three stars because the writing style was cheesy at times, with too many references to the smells/sounds, etc. at the beginning of each chapter. I don't like when an author puts too much description, it just seems like they are using strategies they...more

I could not put this book down! Ryan documents his amazing journey to finding himself, despite what others thought of him. My heart ached while reading Ryan's truth, because I am mother to a transgender child and life could not be more challenging. Ryan is truly inspirational to me and our community. We need to change the way our world views gender! I want to thank you, Ryan, for providing one of the VERY FEW resources for parents of trans kids. I NEEDED your words of wisdom and feel privileged...more

I'm a huge fan of FTM memoirs, and have read as many as I have been able to get my hands on. I pre-ordered Ryan's book and had to wait impatiently well after the release date to finally get it from Amazon, but then read it in about a day. It's a quick read, obviously, and suffers a little from the way in which it was organized. The first section seemed rather lackluster, but it improved after part one. Still, it's great to hear another guy's story. His candor about his eating disorder and its re...more

Ryan makes it very easy to understand and relate to his experience as a transgender man, even if you are not trans yourself. His story is full of hope and strength, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in LGBTQ issues.
As a side note, I've met Ryan, and he is very kind and upstanding.

I met Ryan at the Philly Trans Health Conference. He is just about as friendly as a person could be. This book isn't just about trans people it's about all of humanity.

The only thing more enjoyable than reading this book was to go to one of Ryan's reading and listen to him talk about the book. Thanks Ryan for a courageous book that will help people through some tough times.
