What do you do when you get dumped, fired, and turn thirty in a single unfortunate week? You book the last available ticket on the next plane to Greece. Or at least that’s what the normally unadventurous Anna Cox does in a moment of uncharacteristic spontaneity. When she panics as she belatedly realizes that not booking a hotel room in a country she knows nothing about mig ...more

Debut

“Sometimes, it takes leaving everything you know behind to find yourself…”

Change of Pace is charming story and would be a great beach read, or if you want to go on a holiday but can’t quite yet, and want to escape to life in a quaint village in the Mediterranean, just for a little. It’s Winter here in Australia so the latter was more applicable to me.

It is the story of hard-working Anna Cox from New York, who gets dumped by her boyf

Sofia Essen has written one of the most delightfully charming books I have read in quite some time. Readers will lose themselves in the story from the very beginning and will fall in love with Anna and Alex, along with all the other characters who are so real you feel you could invite them to your dinner table. Anna's honesty about herself as she grows and explores her new world are particulary refreshing, and Alex melts your heart. I hated to come to the end of this book. I highly recommend it ...more

Anne gets dumped from her boyfriend and fired from her job in New York in the space of a week. Shocked and confused she decides to run away from her troubles and jumps on the first plane which takes her to Greece. In the plane she meets Alex, a charming, British rogue who's changed more jobs than shirts and who proposes to her to join him in Crete where he'll be staying. In a quaint, small village outside Chania, Anne lives in a lovely but dillapitating old house, meets the weird but friendly vi ...more

This book, to me, is the very definition of serious chick lit. The characters were interesting, but the pace of this book was torturously slow. TORTUROUSLY SLOW. At the end of the book, the postword said that the author is on an extended holiday on a Greek island that has lasted for twenty years. Okay, so THAT'S where the inspiration for this book came from. I get it. I just felt like there was way, way, way too much detail on the little minutiae like clothing details, food, alcohol, and what th ...more

Essen's debut novel Change of Pace is a wonderfully light beach read.

While the beginning moved a bit slow with relaxing shopping trips and drinking wine, this worked well as it mimicked the life that Essen was describing on Crete compared to Anna's previous life in New York. The novel is written in first person, so the reader won't always know what is going on with other characters and why, but Anna is an interesting narrator and it adds to the fun of watching her learn about Crete, her family a

What do you do when a comfortable and boring routine life is completely turned upside down? Well, if you are Anna Cox, and you get retrenched, then your long term boyfriend dumps you when you don't want to get more serious. Naturally, you jump on a plane; leave your comfortable New York apartment, friends, parents from hell, and travel to Greece to start a new life. Although she doesn't intend for her flight from home to be anything more than temporary, she ends up staying. On the plane she meet ...more

The author's "voice" is remarkable: you are immediately thrown into the main character's mind. You see everything with Anna's eyes, you react with her, you get enthusiastic about Crete, about Anna's new friends and you share her feelings of anxiety when her mother turns up - is she going to wreck everything? - and later, her feelings of despondency. No spoilers, the reason for the despondency won't be revealed here.

This capacity to make you live the life of the main character is the mark of a ta

Review:

"Change of Pace" by Sofia Essen was definitely a pace that Anne Cox needed after being dumped by her boyfriend, fired from her New York job after ten years and turning thirty...all in the same week. So, Anne jumps on a plane to Greece, meets Alex Collins and end up in Crete... then a small village outside Chania called Drapanias at a Bed/Breakfast that belonged to Alex's mom..Jane. In this new place An

This book had alot of potential. It took me about 2/3rds of the book to really get into it and start liking the story. My main problem is that there were way too many details of daily life....many that were repeated so many times I started getting bored with it. I also had a hard time connecting to the romance that was in this book. It got better twards the end, but at first it did not really feel like there was much of one. I wish that there was more of what was in the end portion of the book t ...more
