The purpose of this e-novella, at least in my eyes, was to make waiting for the May release of Binding the Shadows just a bit easier. Mission accomplished, Ms. Bennett. You gave me a chance to spend some quality time with my favorite characters and if possible, got me even more excited about the upcoming book. In length, Leashing the Tempest is about one-fourth of a book, so it’s definitely worth your $0.99 or 2.99, depending on your location.

Bennett's Arcadia Bell series is one of my favorite urban fantasy series and this short novella is just enough to whet my whistle until book three releases in the spring. Reading this just reminded me (like I could even forget) what a gem this series is. There are all the best elements of urban fantasy but set in a beautiful California setting and with a unique laid back sense of humor.

In this novella, Cady, Lon, Jupe, and Kar Yee have chartered a yacht and plan to spend the day at sea testing o...more

I think the biggest draw for me with this series is the relationships between the various main characters. Cady and Lon are... I don't know how to put it. I love the way they sink into one another and happily lean on the strengths of the other in a crisis. Lon rocks the father thing with Jupe. I honestly adore their dynamic and the resigned acceptance Lon has for Jupe's antics. Cady has the protective, growly mama bear thing for Jupe, but in a cool way. She treats him like he's hers and she'll d...more

Really cute, very short story about Cady, boyfriend Lon, and his son Jupe. Jupe has just come into his demon power, or 'knack'; and it's a good one. He can make others do what he wishes just simply by telling them to. Lon invites Cady on an impromptu cruise around the harbor with him and Jupe; and invite the co-owner of Cady's bar to go along with them. Young Jupe has a massive crush on Kar Yee; and they are going to let him try out his 'knack'.

Unbeknownst of all of them, the captain of the Baba...more

Lon, Cady, Jupe and Kar Yee take a day trip on a boat so Lon can take some pictures and they can find a safe environment for Jupe to test his knack. Unfortunately, the Captain is a little strange and through a series of mishaps, they end up with a demon on board.

I really enjoy this series and this was a really nice but way too short story. My mind can't help but wonder if any of the little tidbits that were dropped will factor into anything in the future or if we're just given a cute, little sto...more

Cute + funny side story, I think Lon would call it "nice." It felt like a full sized mystery stuffed into a novella, so it read a bit frantically at times, or maybe that was me, skimming for the 'good stuff' lol. It's funny because I haven't done that with the other Arcadia Bell novels, which I feel unfold quite lyrically, no racing or stilting, just beautifully written narrative. I also can't decide if I adore or despise Kar Yee (somehow, I feel there is no middle ground here) and there was qui...more

Jenn Bennett leapt onto my radar in 2012 with KINDLING THE MOON, the first book in the Cady Bell series and also her debut novel. It's a wonderful series, filled with awesome world building, ribald humour, not-so-ribald-but-equally-entertaining humour, strong relationships, and one very dashing moustache, which is nicely referenced in this mini-novella.

When I first heard about the premise of LEASHING THE TEMPEST, my brain immediately starting singing The Lonely Island's "I'm On A Boat". And then...more

The Review:

Arcadia “Cady” Bell is back with a whole new challenge. Jupe Butler, 16 yr. old son to Cady’s sexy boyfriend Lon, came into his demon ability during the last book, Kindling the Moon; and boy is it a doozy. Jupe can influence people and make them do whatever he wants. Rightly, Cady and Lon wa...more

Cady, Lon and Jupe, along with Cady’s friend Kar Yee take a 3 hour boat trip so that Lon can photograph whales and dolphins and Jupe can practice his knack on Kar Yee. If only things were that simple, there wouldn’t be a story. And no, this isn’t a Gilligan’s Island story.

The best aspects of this series are the characters and relationships and it’s become one of my favorites in the Urban Fantasy genre. And make no mistake; there is plenty of a supernatural element to the stories. Morals play a...more

This is Arcadia Bell "2.5" in the series. I like the idea of releasing a digital novella in between the novels, especially when it's only .99 cents! The story is short and sweet (only took me 1.5 hours to finish, I think), but it's fun and a little side romp with the characters.

Ah, you know I love Cady as a heroine, and I really love the family dynamic with Lon and Jupe. Their triad is what makes this series unique in the urban fantasy genre, I think. I like that Cady's character growth is abou...more

LEASHING THE TEMPEST by Jenn Bennett was the perfect little novella for me. With the right length and perfect pacing, it gave me a taste of the characters and added some development to the series; it made me feel like I was back home, and then it whet my appetite for more.

The Arcadia Bell series is one of my favorites. And what makes it one of my favorites is Jenn Bennet’s ability to really capture the chemistry and camaraderie between Lon, Cady, and Jupe. I love it when writers give the charac...more

I am in a big reading drought. Books I should be totally into, I am finding dull. Instead of three books a week, I have been lucky to get through one. Basically, I haven't been my normal book devouring self. Then this novella came along. I pre-ordered this for my kindle quite awhile ago and hadn't forgotten exactly when it was supposed to come out. Then I turned on my kindle, and there it was...the bright and shiny cover beckoning me to read it. I dug right in. Praise the powers that be! I loved...more

This was a nice little novella in the Arcadia Bell series. It's one of the most unique urban fantasy series I've read in a while, and I endeavor to read each new release as it comes out. I love the main relationships and the world the author has created.

Everything that I love was shown off very well in this short story. You get glimpses of the playful and affectionate relationship between Lon, Jupe, and Cady. The world-building is shown off very well too, what with Cady encountering other demon...more

This is a novella that goes along with the series. I honestly think it should be read in order because you are in full awareness of the characters leading this adventure and you are already invested in them. Plus, this follows the series chronologically.

My fave UF dad, Lon, his son Jupe and Cady are all back in this novella where they are just looking for a small get away for some fun. However, the captain of the ship has a few secrets he's keeping. The secrets plus a precocious Jupe all add up...more

I love this series, so when this novella was released and I couldn't buy it because of stupid region restrictions, I was bummed. Then the lovely Jenn Bennett had a contest for overseas readers and I won a printed copy. Yay! :)

Since I received it on Friday and I wrapped up revision on my own book, I decided to make this my reward. And of course it was! I loved it.

Cady and Lon take Jupe and Kar Yee on a three-hour cruise so they can test the limits of Jupe's new persuasion knack. However, when the...more

This Arcadia Bell novella takes place almost exclusively on a yacht, as Cady, Lon, Jupe and co-owner of Tambuku Tiki Lounge, Kar Yee take what is supposed to be a short cruise for Lon to photograph whales and dolphins. When Jupe tries out his newly awakening persuasion knack on the captain which renders him unresponsive and then a furious storm begins to toss the yacht around and causes the captain to be injured and unconscious, things start getting a bit dicey. Add in a zombie mermaid and Cady...more

I love these books, this writing, these characters SO MUCH. MORE MORE MORE.

(view spoiler)[I almost gave this five stars, but the conclusion made me a little uncomfortable. These men the captain is bringing? Do they have a choice here? I hope so. (hide spoiler)]

My English review

What a pleasure to find Caddy here! This is a heroine I love and each her new adventures is a pleasure to follow. We find in this little novella all the characters we love from the other books. Jupe, Lon, Caddy and her friend Kar Yee. But this story also arises some new questions about our young heroine.

Our small group meets for a cruise ship while Lon wants to take some pictures for his work. But it is also an opportunity to test the powers of Jupe and who i...more

Cady lives in an interesting world with far more to it than what meets the eye. A short e book story about a counter reality, where demons, partial demons, possessions and witches live and interact with in a earth type world. This is a short story of a boat ride that turns out to be more dangerous than the pleasure cruse they signed up for. Lon and his son Jupe were testing their powers, learning their limits, when Jube found out that sometimes if he does not think something through it will brin...more

Jenn Bennett's excellent Arcadia Bell series continues with this sparkling tidbit about a 3-hour cruise (shades of Gilligan's Island!) that Cady takes with Lon, Jupe and Kar Yee and how everything goes awry as Jupe attempts to learn how to use and control his knack. From the very first book, the characters have been so well rounded that the reader feels a true connection with them. I love the dynamics between Lon, Cady and Jupe. Their relationship with each other feels very genuine.

For me, this short story was like gravy on top of two, already delicious books; not essential but oh so good. The familial chemistry between Bennett’s characters in this series is undeniable and somehow manages to shine through even in a short novella like Leashing the Tempest.

Cady usually has much bigger fish to fry so it was fun to visit her during her rare downtime and to see her step-parenting skills in action. She’s definitely a good person to have at your back no m...more

Leashing the Tempest (Arcadia Bell #1.5) - Jenn Bennett

A fun little novella we had while waiting for the third book of the series. It's a little like a 'Day in the life of' story, where we get to see what happens during the characters everyday lives, when they're not fighting of demons or in the middle of some sort of mystery. I really liked it, it highlighted all the reasons I like this series, like the characters and the way the story was handled, what with t...more

Leashing the Tempest takes place after the first two books in the Arcadia Bell series. I would highly recommend reading Kindling The Moon and Summoning The Night before reading Leashing The Tempest.

Arcadia, Lon, Jupe, and Kar Yee take a boat onto the ocean only to encounter a water demon.

Warning, a vague spoiler ahead...

Leashing The Tempest is a short, straight-forward story with the main highlight being the exploration of Jupe's new powers. If you enjoy the Arcadia Bell series you will like thi...more

Cady and Lon along with Jupe and Kar Yee are back in Leashing the Tempest, a short tease of a story by Jenn Bennett. I say tease because I never find I’m with these amazing characters long enough when I’m reading them…and this time especially since this book is only about 65 pages long.

Leashing the Tempest is book number 2.5 in Jenn’s Arcadia Bell series. Lon, thinking about buying a boat, takes the gang out on a luxury boat ride for the day. He also wan...more

Urban fantasy has seen a handful of promising new series in the past year or so, and the Arcadia Bell series is one of the best. Even in this bite sized novella (just the right length during the busy holidays), Bennett perfectly conveys her super cool demon and magic infused world, the smart and playful relationship between her trio of main characters, and a fun twisty mystery with plenty of action.

While I highly encourage new r...more

Romancing the Dark Side Review:

A fun but short story that reminds me why I fell in love with the series!

In this mini-installment of the series, Cady and Lon attempt to test his son Jupe's newly discovered knack of persuasion on Cady's business partner and friend, Kar Yee. What was supposed to be a fun and relaxing afternoon on the sea soon turns into an unexpected adventure filled with plenty of mystery and mermaids. Ms. Bennett doesn't fail to impress you with her "knack" for playful banter be...more

{This review was originally published on Clear Eyes, Full Shelves.}

It’s no secret that Jenn Bennett’s Arcadia Bell series is one of my favorite urban fantasy series, up there with Patricia Briggs’ wonderful Mercy Thompson books. In fact, the two series share a lot of commonalities. Both are packed with memorable, multi-faceted characters, good humor and warmth.

The long wait between books in this series is mildly torturous (though, thankfully, each wraps up a complete story) but fortunately, Lea...more

This little novella turned out to be better than the second book in the series, which is quite funny when one thinks about it. The character development was good for the character of Jupe, which makes sense since this story revolves around him. We also get to see Kar-Yee and Lon and Arcadia too. It's a quick little read, and I enjoyed it. It will have to do in tying me over till the third book comes out. I needed the sequel yesterday, but oh well the wait continues...

Even not having read any of the other Arcadia Bell books, I still enjoyed this little daytrip on stormy seas to Jenn Bennett's world and may just have to move this series off of my mental 'to try someday' pile. I liked the allusions to Cady's, apparently little bit naughty, relationship with Earthbound demon Lon and I liked the dynamic between the supporting cast - toss in magic and a situation involving a character from Russian myth and for me this was all good.
