Oh no!!! I can't believe that Duncan and Seremela, two very interesting and incredibly likable supporting characters from Harrison's 'Elder Races' series, have had their story relegated to... this - a warp speed quick adventure/romance squeezed into a too-short novella that has little significance in the overall series arc. Needless to say, I'm disappointed. So very disappointed.

It shouldn't be a big shock that I'm stupid in love with this series. I adore everything about it - from the world building (OMG! FANTASTIC!) to the characters (*swoon swoon swoon*) to the situations those characters find them in (Fights to the death! Hawt sexin'! Backstabbing and other shenanigans!). I honestly can NOT get enough of this world.

Oh how I love the Elder Races series by Thea Harrison. The author got me with Dragon Bound, the first in the series, and has not let me go! The novellas she writes are side stories to the full length ones (they may or may not refer to past characters) but I devour them like chocolate. This edition was no different.
I loved Seremella because she was so different, well with being a Medusa and all. I am surprised I liked her because I am not a snake person and don't particularly want them in my stor...more

As an adventure vignette is really cute. As a romance, not so much. You don't love a person in a day, even if he saves the day (or niece). You may fall or start to, but all the mushy feeling are really wasted here.
A sweet Medusa is surely new, but a tad unbelievable. .
I suspect that even in novella format, this story would have improved greatly. As a short (and I mean short) story, everything is simply hinted at. But, damn, she can write.

Well, if you have read Dragon Bound, you know Thea Harrison can do a great Alpha male. But who would have thought that she can do a Beta male, too! Devil's Gate proves that Harrison is multi-talented!
I wasn't dying to read Devil's Gate, since I was a little disappointed in Natural Evil, Harrison's last Elder Races novella. But now the pattern is coming clear and I am glad that I read this one. Bringing together two side characters we've met in previous books, Ms. Harrison takes us back into the world of the Elder Races and more fully introduces the Medusa to us. Intelligent, honorable and light green, Dr. Seremela Telemar receives a call from her sister imploring her to go and collect her rebellious niece, Vetta, who has run off again. While Seremela is becoming somewhat tired of helping her sister deal with her daughter, she does agree to go and rescue her from "Devil's Gate" a tent...more

Quick & Dirty: A fun story about a medusa and a vampyre going to rescue a girl in a lawless town and eventually finding love that’s set within the world of the Elder Races series.
Opening Sentence: Seremela Telemar leaned against the frame of the open balcony doors in her high-rise apartment and looked out at the ocean view.

I’m no stranger to the paranormal romance category, but this one was a whole new ball game for me. Devil’s Gate is a great quick read, and a trip into a new world very similar to ours with just a few of the mythology characters we have heard of since forever.
Medusa Seremela Telemar is quite shy and more comfortable in her professional setting as a coroner, but her sister has called her to go find her wild child niece, Vetta. She is determined that this wil...more

The blurb itself tell much about the story and since its a short novella I can hardly comment more without spoiling the story . Devil’s Gate is the Elder Races novella that narrates the story of Seremela, the medusa medical examiner that had helped the previous Elder Races characters with cases and sometimes research on something. Now she’s newly relocated to Miami where she can continue working with Carling and Rune, her days became stunted when her sister called up with a news that her unruly...more
“Devil’s Gate” by Thea Harrison is a novella that continues the tale of a mysterious set of tarot cards which is traveling through the community of Elder races which are coexisting with humankind. Seremela Telemar is a medusa who is a medical doctor, pathologist and academician and has joined Carling and Rune in their new Miami center in order to focus on private medical research. A family emergency results in her traveling to Devil’s Gate, a sprawling wild mining city in Nevada that is out of c...more
Seremela Telemar, coroner and employee to Carling & Rune, has to go rescue her runaway niece AGAIN. But this time she gets some help in the form of the uber sexy vampire lawyer, Duncan Turner. Duncan and Seremela will have to travel to Devil's Gate, a lawless territory filled with magic, criminals, and a little girl who bit off more then she could chew. Once inside, they realize that getting in was easy...getting out may prove fetal.

I very much enjoyed this novella for the Elder Races series by Thea Harrison. The medusa heroine Seremela is a treat, and I liked getting to catch up with Duncan (Carling's lawyer) and, by extension, Carling and Rune. I wish we could have seen more of Seremela and Duncan together, however - their romance feels a bit rushed and the action is short-lived.

Seremela Telemar, medical-examiner medusa & newly employed by retired Vampire Queen Carling/gryphon-Rune in Miami, takes a leave of absence to retrieve her trouble making niece, Vetta (who stole the Tarot deck) from the new lawless "gold-rush" town Devil's Gate. Duncan Turner, Carling's attorney and georgous vampire refuses to let her go alone and they together look for Serrie's incompetent sister Camilla's rebellious/goth daughter. Devil's Gate has no formal law and is currently controlled...more
Why ALL Elder Races's book covers can't be like this??
Salute for Samhain art department that make this cover alone much much better than all the book cover's combine.
The model is so nom nom, I want it to my self ;)
BTW, I can't imagine how Duncan will... court Seremela. You know, with all those snake in Seremela's head, beside Seremela have green skin. Seems like this one will involved many.. biting scenes ;)

Devil's Gate I've been a fan of Thea Harrison's Elder Races series since the first book, DRAGON BOUND. While I've enjoyed some of the books more than others, The latest entries, while short, have lived up to the original. Ms. Harrison's prose returned to the "roots" of DB and I enjoyed getting lost in her language. This story brings back two secondary characters from previous books, Duncan Turner, a vampire lawyer--no jokes please!--and Seremela Telamar, a medusa research physician who was lured...more
DEVIL’S GATE (Elder Races novella #3 (4.6)) by Thea Harrison
DEVIL’S GATE is the 3rd novella in Thea Harrison’s Novel of the Elder Races series. Unlike the previous two novellas, Devil’s Gate stayed true to the Elder Race characters. Natural Evil and True Colors ventured down a different path, and one that was not as enticing or exciting, but with Devil’s Gate Thea has, once again, found her style. There is little reference to the ‘magical Tarot cards’ until the final couple of chapters and only...more

I loved this one!
Seremela stole my heart in Serpent's Kiss so I had high expectations for this novella. And it did not disappoint. Despite being only around 100 pages long, Devil's Gate captured my attention from the start.
Seremela, one of the rare medusa, sets off to Devil's Gate, a land full of crooks and criminals, to fetch her niece, Vetta. Duncan comes along for the ride so she won't face Devil's Gate alone. They find out Vetta's about to be hanged for a murder she didn't commit and race t...more

I'm not sure how to review this story, as a romance and as an adventure it worked very well. The problem is that those two halves felt entirely separate from each other.
The messy danger of Devil's Gate blew in and out too fast, I wanted more out of that tent city than a blur of troll parking, pharmacy, casino. Still, the places Harrison does describe are striking and distinct, and Devil's Gate shimmers with the squalor and lawlessness of an Old West town. There is a lot of story for this short...more

I liked Devil's Gate, though I wished it were longer. I liked the pairing, smooth, calm, vampire lawyer Duncan and medusa medical examiner Seremela and the framework for the story was good, but would have been liked everything to be a bit more fleshed out - the conflict is easily resolved and Duncan and Seremela's relationship moves from admiring acquaintances to thoughts of forever quickly too. And really I think that being short, I'd have been happy without Harrison trying to connect the dots...more

MinnChica: After reading the last novella set in the Elder Races world I was a little worried that these short stories would continue more on the UF path instead of focusing on the romance. However, this book felt as if it went back to Harrison’s romance roots. I couldn’t wait to find out more about the medusa mythology and was absolutely blown away with how much I adored this book. Vampire lawyer Duncan comes to the aid of co-worker and medusa Seremela Telemar when her niece runs off to Devil's Gate.
I'm a fan of Thea Harrison's novels but I'm not fond of most of her novellas. The romance was so rushed, they both literally fall in love with each over a period of a day - it was unrealistic and unsatisfying.
Sere and Duncan were both likeable characters and they deserved more than a rushed, superficial and unconvincing romance. I was looking forward to seeing how Sere's head o...more

Harrison doesn't bother trying to hide it. Devil's Gate may refer to a lawless town in uberAmerica, really the story is about another Devil's Gate that lies between a Medusae's legs. (Wow that was crass even by my standards)
Ever wondered what would happen if a vampyre and a medusa decided to get in on? Read this book.

This a novella in the Elder Races series (only 7 chapters) and continues to follow the owners of the mysterious tarot deck.
Given the novella length, I wouldn't have thought that you could successfully fit in the call for a rescue - Seramella of her niece Vetta, planning the details - cue Duncan Turner, create a burgeoning attraction between these leads, throw in some action, a rescue and some romance. But TH has done it and well.

I have read all of the novellas associated with the Elder Races series. I've enjoyed them, but they've always felt disconnected from the full length books in the series. Until now. "Devil's Gate" is kind of like a magnet that picks up a bunch of bits and pieces from just almost every novel and novella that's come before and successfully cashes in on the richness of the established world-building. And I liked it.

I am so not a novella kind of gal. For me, I just like a longer and meatier story. That being said, ohhhh how I loved this novella. Devil's Gate is absolutely charming, and action-packed. It totally worked for me. Already an Elder Races series fan, I am so happy I decided to read this one.
Seremela is a completely unassuming heroine. She is a medusa and has snakes for hair! They have minds of their own, and sometimes she has to tie them back because they can be everywhere from rude to flirtatious...more

Another good novella from Harrison, but I wish it was longer. The ending seemed rushed and I would have liked a bit more focus on relationship development. However, I liked the story itself, which had some good action/adventure, as well as the lead characters. We saw Duncan again (the high ranking vampire lawyer from the earlier books) as well as the medusa medical examiner. An unusual matchup! I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and other stuff. I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn't sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don't have to ride my tricycle to get there. My Elder Races series began May, 2011. You can...more

“Listen to me. I did not say I was falling in love with you, if only you would hide some part of yourself or change some aspect to try to please me. I said I was falling in love with you—all of you. I don’t want you to curb yourself, deny yourself, cover up your face or head or any part of your body. I don’t want you to lose or gain weight, or watch what you say, or deny how you feel, or try to be anything but who you are, because who you are is the most beautiful person in the world to me.”
