SubterraneanCatalyst ; I Will Always Read
I have read this entire series up to date but this is the only book I'll write a review for. Why you ask? It is simply because I have a tendency, if I am in the zone with a series that I plow through it and read any book available like a locust through a crop. I REALLY like this series.
You shouldn't be reading this review if you haven't read the other books or you want to read this series ok? You have been warned, I assume you can read since you're on GR, so don't moan if you come across someth...more

From the opening scene on the top of a moving train at night, this story begins the arc that will carry (allegedly) through the end of the series, and it does not let up. We get to see more of the empire, more explosions, and ... more cliffhangers.

Since Emperor Sespian has asked Amaranthe's motley crew of do-good outlaws to kidnap him, Sicarius has accordingly upped the level of training. Even with Amaranthe as our lead (and a fine, not-so-fearless-but-certainly-courageous leader she is), by th...more

Newcomers to Lindsay Buroker's Emperor's Edge series should read them in order: "The Emperor's Edge," "Dark Currents," "Deadly Games" and, most recently, "Conspiracy." While all can be read as standalone stories, there is an overarching storyline that will make the most sense if you start at the beginning.

At the end of "Deadly Games," a note from the emperor offered Amaranthe and her group of mercenaries a large sum of money to kidnap him. No explanation was offered, but for a group of people se...more

The problem with developing emotional attachments to characters is that you get very... testy when things aren't resolved. This book ends on a cliffhanger. So be warned. That said, it was excellent. I wanted some things to happen differently. I wanted Amaranthe to talk to Sicarius more. I wanted Sicarius to... be more... well, like he was in a couple of the scenes. But again, I'm invested in this series now, horribly and happily.

As always, the battle scenes are some of the best I've read. The a...more

Conspiracy is book 4 in the Emperor’s Edge series. Amaranthe, Sicarius, Maldynado, Books, Akstyr and Basilard are all preparing to kidnap the Emperor per the Emperor’s request. They are practicing the exercise on a moving train. They soon discover a shipment of unscheduled weapons have been loaded to the train they are on and so begins the non-stop adventure of the Emperor’s Edge gang.

Conspiracy contains the back story on Akstyr, it gives us more of an insight into Akstyr’s life and what brought...more

** I apologize for the excited feel of this review as I have just finished the book, it is late at night, and I am still in a post-Emperor's Edge state of overwhelming emotion. **

Upon finishing this book, I experienced a moment of complete insanity wherein I nearly screamed aloud at 11pm because the ending came so abruptly (downside of eBooks?) and was so unexpected that I could not handle the amount of emotion I was confronted with. Lindsay Buroker handles mystery wonderfully and she manages to...more

The third book in the Emperor's Edge series ends with a rather intriguing message delivered to Amaranthe, and the team spends the bulk of this novel working to carry out the request of the emperor Sespian. The whole team is back, with the primary focus this time on the conflicted Akstyr, who desperately wishes to travel far away to study mental Science (otherwise known as magic), and may well be willing to betray a team member to accomplish his wish. We briefly meet Akstyr's mother, who abandone...more

Loved it, loved it! I almost did not read this series because the Steampunk genre did not seem like something I would love, but I did. It is rare to find epic series that is so consistently good, exciting and rich. How does Ms. Buroker do this? Well developed characters? Check! Likeable characters? Check! Even the ruthless assassin...I want Amaranthe to have a happily ever after with Sicarius, whatever that may be, but I am also enjoying Sicarius' slow 'awakening' also. Ms. Buroker even manages...more

The fourth installment of The Emperor’s Edge series is a fast-paced read. Buroker’s writing just keeps getting better. In this volume, she tells the backstory of Akstyr, a sullen youth with a dangerous past. He really matures here, both in his personality and in his skills with magic. I liked the resolution of his struggle to become a full-fledged member of the group. There were some pretty intense life-or-death scenes in his story arc, concluding with his biggest challenge involving the Emperor...more

This series is phenomenal. Our hero is almost an anti-hero but you still root for him and look for the good in him. Besides he's damn sexy ;) You root for and love all the members of the Emperor's Edge. All of this is due to the main character. Amaranthe Lockdon is a girl that I would want to be best friends with and hell, I'd jump into her crazy schemes and still be laughing when I landed in jail. She is strong, independent, witty (LOVE the dialogue!), and human. She, the members of the Emperor...more

I’ve decided that Lindsay Buroker is a colossal tease. She’s been dragging out the romance in this series for four frickin’ books! grrr
I’ve been pretty entertained though so far so I guess I mind.

As with each book, Buroker goes into another one of the gang’s point of view. This one delves into the mind of Akstyr, who’s actually one of my favorite characters. I say that because he got the longest list of bad character traits. He’s lazy, grumpy, selfish, immature, difficult and more than a little...more

I didn't love this fourth book of the series as much as the previous ones. It's not bad, but it has some issues.
Firstly, the editing isn't as good. I'm not sure whether that's because I bought it from Smashwords rather than Amazon, but I noticed three instances of "who's" where the author meant "whose", one "it's" instead of "its", "quaking" instead of "quacking" and one or two other errors. The earlier books were very clean.
There were also other errors of usage that many people make, but that...more

This edition to the Emperor's Edge collects shows the team has matured in relationships well expect for Maldynado and precision. The team was asked by the Emperor himself to rescue him from the gripes of Forge, the group of people who are try to take over the Empire. The team must kidnap the Emperor and thwart attempts to kill him and return him to the capital as well as achieve their ultimate goal of exoneration. Sicarius, however wish for a new beginning with the Emperor who happens to be his...more

Evil cliffhanger of EVIL.

Will say a bit more about this, instead of just whining, but not until I've got Amaranthe back in a *slightly* better situation.

My plans for racing straight into Blood and Betrayal (EE#5) hit a snag, and I ended up giving a friend of Becca's a knitting lesson instead - also enjoyable, if on a much less adventurous level!

I've finished Blood and Betrayal now, and it really makes little sense to write the two up separately, so will cover them both there.

Oh My! Brilliant dialogue with attitude! Danger! Steampunk!

Let's start with the Cliff Hanger Ending-ugh! 'Nuff said! I felt a rash coming on with that one!

Romantic tension! Sicarius, come on! The woman wants you!

Sespian has planned his own abduction for his own reasons! As if Amaranthe and the boys don't have enough problems! Akstyr gets more of his story told, his past makes his character's actions, attitudes, more real.

Once again, Lindsay Buroker has created a story worth getting hooked on! T...more

Conspiracy is another great addition to the Emperor's Edge series. I wasn't much of an Akstyr fan before this book, but getting to read his POV helped to make him more accessible for me. As always, the chemistry between characters brings the story to life, and the dialogue is snappy and fun. I thought the ending of Deadly Games left me hanging, but that was nothing compared to the cliffhanger at the end of this book! Thank goodness Lindsay is quick about getting her new titles out, because I can...more

Okay, seriously you guys…there just aren’t enough great things to say about Lindsay Buroker’s books. So far, this was probably one of my favorites in the entire series. SPOILER ALERTS! In the previous book, Deadly Games, Emperor Sespian Sevarsin requests that Amaranthe’s team kidnap him. Conspiracy opens on a dangerous train exercise in which her crew tries to practice their kidnapping-the-emperor-from-a-locomotive technique. This entire novel was non-stop action and excitement. There was never...more

This entry into the Emperor's Edge saga is different on two main fronts: it sets itself up as part one of a trilogy, and it's a lot more fast-paced than previous entries. Both work to its favour.

There's never been a lack of action in this series; Buroker is great about giving the reader incentive to keep furiously turning pages. This book somehow felt a lot faster, though. The action was pretty well non-stop for the latter half of the book. While there was still lots of time for character develo...more

What you should know going into this review, is that I am unabashedly in love with these books.

In a way I sort of dreaded this book because it was the one where we get Akstyr’s POV, and he’s always rubbed me the wrong way. As the one member of the group who has always looked out for himself more than the others, I felt like Akstyr was going to harsh my good vibes about the Emperor’s Edge group.

You know it’s the mark of a good author and storyteller when a book focusing on a character you don’t p...more

I cannot express how much I love these books! OK maybe I can considering I'm writing a review and I NEVER write reviews, in fact this is my first book review. I downloaded Emperor's Edge since it was free for kindle and I am so thankful that I didn't skip over it (which I almost did) as this series has jumped to the top as my all time favorite.

Buroker takes you on exciting adventures with an unusual pairing of heroes. The witty dialog will have you chuckling and the near death action will keep...more

I don't know what I would do if Lindsay wasn't such a fantastic writer?! I feel a little like a young child does after eating a bucket full of sweets, both a sugar (Sicarius) induced high and a little sick. Sick at the thought that I have to wait for book #5 - oh wait! book #5 was released two days ago! Woohoo!!

I must get my Sicarius fix. Sorry, getting ahead of myself here. *wipes drool*

Do you ever feel that someone is writing just for you. That's how Ms. Buroker's writing is. Her characters are real, they remind you of people you know; even the assassin! Their strengths and weaknesses provide layering that improves a finely crafted plot line. I have throughly enjoyed the series and like it that the characters I have grown to like aren't summarily killed off every two hundred pages or so. A light touch here that is consistently engrossing. Superb series; highly recommended.

The action in this book is very good and this part of the book represents a real move forward with the basic plot line (the "kidnapping" of the emperor) and that's why I gave it four stars, but this book had a very different feel to me from the other books in the series. Maybe I was just pissed off that Sicarius is missing for large gaps in the book. I appreciate, in theory, the idea that each character is getting his own book to tell his story (but I still want all of my favorite characters to...more

Amaranthe Lokdon and the Emperor’s Edge mercenaries attempt to kidnap the emperor, at his request. This book is darker than the others, still very funny but often sad as well. The main relationship is challenged, as is our faith in the redemption of the assassin Sicarius. Akstry, the young mental sciences practitioner, is the secondary character in the spotlight, making all of his flaws painfully apparent. That Buroker finds a way to show him growing up and finding a stronger role points to the...more

I'm loving this series, though a bit surprise/dismayed/excited about the cliffhanger at the end of this book. The first three were self-contained stories. This one has left me completely hanging at a critical moment, in a good way - I will probably get the next book today, but I know that number 6 isn't published yet, which could drive me crazy when I get to the end of number 5...

My one beef - this world really needs a map.

Lindsay Buroker is up there with the best of the best in fantasy writing. This amazing series combines a wonderful steampunk world, an array of characters that continually develop, humor, great dialogue and writing, and a story that is infused with action and suspense. AND I just found out that her book Encrypted takes place in the same world 15 or so years prior and a young Sicarius is in it! Exciting stuff...I'm eagerly awaiting the next book.

Another fantastic book in EE series. One of those books I should've known to reserve for a weekend, when sleep and work weren't also advised/required activities. The gang is back in classic style with typical hijinks, death defying acts, and one-liners that make you wish you were friends with the author because you just know she's got to be funny and fun in person. Highly recommend this (but read the series in order if you're new to the stories).
Laura
Cannot wait for the next book! I feel like Buroker's timing with Akstyr's story was good...I had not really cared for his character much at all, but this book brought me around. He's still not my favorite, but am looking forward to seeing continued growth & maturity from his character.

(view spoiler)[
I do think that Amaranthe lets Sicarius off a little too easily for the Forge killings considering that Books hadn't finalized confirmation of if/how much those people were involved, and even if

This series started very promising but after a while, the heroin's obsession with clearing her name becomes tiresome, though. As is the pattern: Amaranthe (or sometimes Books) imagines a crazy scheme, the team follows, everything around them explodes but they come out alive. However there is enough action and plot development to keep me interested in reading the rest. It loks like book five will break the pattern a bit and I'm looking forward to it.

Wow what a book and what series, recommend it to anyone who loves action, humour and a bit of understated romance (not like today's porn ridden books), even though i am sure all the fans of the series are hoping for a bit more by now from certain relationships. This is exactly why I didn't give it the 5 stars it fully deserved -Authors need to suffer for the craft
