Hym and Hur are a young couple who never age and have been in love for more than a century. They also possess an array of magical abilities, two of which are either to play pranks on humankind or to perform good deeds. Enacting both at the same time is now what gets them into trouble, especially since it's the unruly character of Death they must deal with to bring their pl...more

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is very short, at just 22 pages this is definitely what you would class as a 'Short Story'. I read it in about 15 minutes and I have to admit, it left me saying 'Why?' I didn't really get it.
OK, let me rewind and try to explain. The story follows a mischievous couple called 'Hym' and 'Hur', very odd names but I can just about look past that. But I'm not entirely sure WHAT they are, they can make themselves unseen, talk to...more

“As others have noted, this author has the ability to switch genres and always be interesting and intriguing in some way. In current markets this can be chancy, or certainly ratings can suffer if an author associated primarily in one genre crosses over and previous readers sometimes cannot seem to make the distinction that some authors do have such ability. They choose to not change their name but instead present themselves as a “Renaissance” writer of sorts. I admire that and as a cross over au...more

Synopsis: Hym and Hur, immortal and very much in love, seek diversion in the mortal world. They coerce Death into allowing them to choose a single person, and that person would have the gift to save those scheduled to die. But, what kind of a story would it be if everything ran to plan?

Now, admittedly, this is a very short story, but short stories bring their own challenges in the reading and the writing. Pleasantly, Hym and Hur bring a welcome diversion.

The story carries itself with a charming...more

A thoroughly enjoyable short story, Phillip Frey’s Hym and Hur has pleasingly thought-provoking humor, combining a delightful premise with thoroughly enjoyable execution. The author’s light touch with matters of heaven and hell blends perfectly with the innocent mood of his oddly ancient protagonists, Hym and Hur, as they plan their next curious prank.

The human protagonists are pleasing too as their perils stretch before them, but the reader’s eyes are kept firmly fixed on the mystical—how will...more

HYM and HUR is a somewhat whimsical short story involving two fairy-like beings who make a pact with Death, and in the process cause trouble for an innocent human and his girlfriend. Despite its sometimes uneven characterization, it succeeds as a light read with brisk pacing.

The story revolves around a prank, planned by the titular characters, who are a pair of seemingly immortal young lovers with magical powers. They meet Death, who offers to help them, as long as they agree to some slightly mo...more

Hym and Hur by Phillip Frey ?YA Paranormal

This is a fun, quick read about a young couple. They read like adolescents, young and innocent with a penchant for mischievousness. They are immortal so who knows how old they really are. They have a lot of time on their hands, and when they get bored they like to mess with mortals. They have the potential for spreading joy and good will as much as wreaking havoc.

I've had those kind of days where I could swear someone was messing with me. We've all had th...more

This is a short story about an immortal couple who have abilities. They help people and play pranks on them, but it must be approved by Death first. As they think of pranks, they come up with a way to help people, Death approves it. But is it because he wants to see HYM and HUR do good? Or does he have his own plans?
I thought that it was a good short story. I just wish that we could have gotten to know the characters more. Like how did Hym and Hur become immortal or were they always?

I want to start off by saying how much I adore the title. It is a clever play on the words "him" and "her". I wish I could be that clever... Anyway... I was contacted a few days ago by Mr. Frey to read and review this sweet story. Normally I don't read short stories because let's face it, I like big thick novels with 350 plus pages. But the story seemed like a good one, so I accepted his offer.
I was pleasantly surprised while reading the first few pages and I really enjoyed Hym and Her. They w...more

This short story, Hym and Hur by Phillip Frey, is so fun. Hym and Hur are two, well, I suppose you could call them sprites. They don't age and they like to wreak havoc. In this short story they make a deal with Death and watch as things unfold.

The characters are so bubbly and wonderful. Even Death, with his depressing outlook on life and his cynicism, I liked. There were a few moments that could have been silly or out of place, but Phillip's writing turned those moments around so they made sense...more

Hym and her is a quick read filled with witty humour, a belief in love and also there is no Tricking Death himself.

Hym and Hur are immortals living and roaming the earth, playing pranks on people loving each other and living life the only way they know how.. Pranking ..

They approach death and ask him to help along with a prank they have come up with, But death being whom he is tops the prank with his own clauses. All to eager to agree lol.

Hym and Hur are relatively good souls, even though they...more

Hym and Hur are immortal, kind of like Fates, in my opinion. They have the power to change things and controls things for humans, and they enjoy pulling pranks. This story starts with Hym and Hur sitting in a diner debating what to do to Los Angeles. Does everyone get bad luck for a day? How about good luck? What will it be? Death enters the conversation and it changes the stakes.

Archie is an artist, starving so, as it seems. Archie loves Sarah, but Sarah is concerned about money – stable money,...more

First off I love the play on the title (Hym and Hur = Him and Her). I thought that was brilliant! This a very quick read under 50 pages but it is fun, comical, and lets you know there is no tricking Death! Hym and Hur are young and will never age so to entertain themself they like to play pranks on humans but they have to get the pranks approved by Death first who has been known to add his own spin to the prank!

Hym and Hur remind me of two kids wreaking havoc on unsuspecting victims but they nev...more

Hym and Hur are a young pair that never age and are truly good beings. In this story they are looking to play a prank on mankind that will bring goodness, not evil, to the world. When Hym and Hur bargain to choose one person who can save people from Death things do not go as they planned.

They choose Archie, a starving artist who is hoping to finally get a gallery opening. His girlfriend Sarah has had enough of his dead end job and is waiting to break up with him. When Sarah gets hit by a bus ev...more

This was a very amusing short story about two supernatural beings who make a pact with Death and, of course, things turn out a bit more complicated than they imagined.
With short stories, pacing is crucial, and this one is handled well, mixing a good amount of action with characterization. It’s just enough to keep the readers entertained, while also telling us a bit about the protagonist. In my case, I would have actually liked to have seen a bit more about them, actually. Where their powers came...more

Did I enjoy this book: Hym and Hur was alright. It was a very short story that I read in under an hour. But for me, it just didn't make much sense.

The main characters, Hym and Hur, were cute and they want to do good in the world - even though Hym likes to play pranks every now and then. But their names made the story a bit difficult for me to read. I wanted to read he and she every time Hym and Hur were written because it would have been "more correct" that way. (And I realize the chara...more

First I would like to thank Philip for allowing me to read and review his book Hym and Hur. This was a short story packed with a punch! I read it at work during my break. Once you start reading about these two you can not put it down.Man can you imagine being in love with the same person for a century? Lord knows I can't! But these two were made for each other and compliment each other.

Hym and Hur are practical jokers and stole my heart right away because I love a good joke. Death oh lord had me...more

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I like short stories, and this one worked for me just fine. Yes, the full story of Hym and Hur is never fully explained, but I like a little mystery with my fiction; we know that they are some kind of supernatural being, they're on speaking terms with Death (just), they're experienced practical jokers and they know the meaning of true love, having been in it for a long, long time (possibly forever). And that's about all we need to know.

This is the story of Hym and Hur, a couple who have been in love a long time and never age. They love playing pranks on people with their special powers. This time however they have made a deal with Death in exchange for a good deed. They may choose someone to save people from dying by touch alone, for 24 hours. But this is Death and there is always a loophole....

This was a deliciously funny little tale. I loved the pranks Hym & Hur played and the funny interventions they made into peoples l...more

To start off this review, let me tell you I actually liked this story. I've never really been a fan of short stories, they end too soon. This one I would have loved to see this story a little bit longer. I think that maybe a better back story for the characters would have been really appreciated.

The characters are one thing in particular that I really want to share about. These characters were very comical and they felt very thought out to me. Hym is a p...more

Hym and Hur is a fun fantasy read and a pager turner. I enjoyed watching Hym and Hur play a joke on L.A.. They think it will all be good but along the way are some unexpected surprises. Death is a guy that takes advantage of any situation. I also like that Death got a holiday! Archie a struggling artist and Sarah have some issue to work out. It would be fun to see what other mischief Hym, Hur and Death get into. A quick entertaining read!

Just FYI~ This does contain some swearing and no sex.

This was a very short story that was pretty quick.

The main characters were Hym and Hur, who are a couple who never age. They were fun loving and are looking for a good time.

The plot of this story was interesting and unique. It was a fun read.

There were some issues I had though. I feel like because the story was short the characters were not as developed as they could have been. I also feel like there were some holes in the storyline.

Overall I think the story was a satisfying read.

This really was a cute fun short story about a mischievous pair of lovers Hym and Hur (clever play on the words "him" and "her").
I enjoyed reading about their antics and their love for one another was very sweet.

Death was a little more evil although, still not a bad guy in this one.

Good for those times when you only have a few moments to read and wants something fun and quick and really very well written.
