Skinny, quiet hipster Dylan Warner was the kind of guy other men barely glanced at until an evening's indiscretion with a handsome stranger turned him into a werewolf. Now, despite a slightly hairy handicap, he just wants to live an ordinary-if lonely-life as an architect. He tries to keep his wild impulses in check, but after one too many close calls, Dylan gives up his u...more

This is a new author for me -- and while I'm weary to try new authors these days, at the same time I'm still a sucker for shifter stories (*head desk*). I do keep my expectation low, though. I find it as a great start for any story by new author :).

Turns out that I really like it. Although the story involves werewolf, but there's no possessive-you-my-mate theme that easily be found in others. Instead, while Dylan feels lonely because of his secret. He is afraid to be in a relationship because he...more

Good solid writing and I like the way the story and romance develops. I enjoyed it a lot, you get a real feel for Dylan's struggle and worry over his shifting. Much better than the usual high drama of pack politics and finding your mate scenario. Dylan and Chris are great sparring partners, while working on the renovation of the farmhouse. Initially I didn't think they would mesh well together as Chris is a moody guy, then I worked out he was terribly lonely and Dylan was perfect for him. Temper...more

I really enjoyed this sweet shifter story. I liked Dylan and Chris and thought their relationship was interesting. I thought it worked better having it take place over a long period of time. I think it would have helped to have Chris' side of the story. The story got a bit slow in parts, I think this would have prevented that from happening. I liked seeing Dylan at work and thought that was a great element.

This book cries out for a sequel. It has a great ending but I want more to the story. I really enjoy reads like this, it's such a nice sweet romance that happens to have a werewolf or two.

ETA: I just did a re-read of this book in anticipation of the sequel that's being released later this month. I'm glad that I did, I forgot how prickly a character Chris was with his history and how tortured Dylan was being a werewolf. This was just a good a read the second time around. Especially wonderful for...more

What is with the blechy cover? These guys are supposed to be in their mid 20’s but here they look more like sneering kids. Definitely not like the grown-up hipster and the rough around the edges handyman they are in the story. I think I’d prefer one of those stock shirtless guy covers to this thing. Okay, covering eyes now so I can get on with the contents of the book.

Dylan is an architect in a big city hiding a big secret. Once a month he turns all wolfy and stalks the land for fresh meat. An e...more

I liked this take on shifters because (ludicrously) it seemed realistic. There wasn't any mating/bonding scent, knotting, Alpha-Omega stuff. This is more of An American Werewolf in London-style shifter book. Because, ow, yes it would hurt. If werewolves existed, and an average Joe got turned, I can believe they would be just like Dylan.

Actually, the main focus of the book is on the renovation of Dylan's old farmhouse, and this was very enjoyable. This is what I hoped A Better Man would be; two s...more

I love Kim Fielding's writing: clear and evocative, with just the right amount of description. She does a great job getting into the heads and hearts of her main characters, and her secondary characters are also well drawn. I found the scenes of werewolf-shifting in this book to be exceedingly good, and I liked how the bits and pieces of the main character's past slowly come together like pieces of a puzzle. There were some intriguing bits of background provided for the love interest in this boo...more

A very good story, well written and interesting.

Another well written story by Kim Fielding.

The characters and their love story are believable, even if I felt the urge to smash their heads together to make them finally talk about their feelings. At least some of the time, when I wasn't laughing out loud or got distracted by the rather hot sex they were up to.

That would be reason enough to enjoy the book, but even without a single steamy scene it would have been an enjoyable read. The story made sense, Kim's descriptions brought characters an...more

This is quite a recent read of mine and I was surprised! I love being surprised.

What I liked about it is that, although this is a werewolf novel, it almost doesn't read like one. It was like reading a contemporary novel that has a main character that happens to have a werewolf. I get that this might actually come across as a fault, but to me it really wasn't. I loved that the focus was how being a werewolf affected Dylan and his life, his own issues with accepting it as part of his life and how...more

I enjoyed a different book by this author and I love paranormal romance so I thought that I'd give this one a try.

Dylan, an architect by day, a lonely man by night and a werewolf once a month, heeds his brother's advice and seeks a place in the country where he can let his wolf run without hurting anyone. His boss is willing to give the 'work from home come in to the office for meetings' a try.

Dylan finds the perfect place- an old farmhouse with lots of property on the edge of the national fore...more

I enjoyed Kim Fielding’s "Brute" so much, that I decided to dive right into another of her books at once--- "Good Bones."

In the “gay paranormal” genre, shifter stories are incredibly popular; there are sooo many of them out there. (Shifter novels seem to be more numerous than tales of vampires or the Fae or what have you.) I’ve read a handful of these books, with mixed results; while my reading experience has been pleasant enough, I can’t say that most of the novels distinguished themselves in a...more

Its hard to find a new slant in a genre that has flooded the market to the point where most stories feel tired and repetative, especially when it comes to the paranormal - vampires and werewolves in particular.

How refreshing to find a werewolf novel that bucks against the trend. I loved this, the paranormal aspect was cleverly done and the underlying danger and tension in the story works into the plot perfectly.

Kim Fielding writes a really good book that considering its premise never feels far f...more

I quite enjoyed the story. A nice 3.5 stars for this.

(view spoiler)[It wasn't the usual tell of getting accustomed to being a werewolf or becoming one and finding a pack to join. This was about Dylan being afraid of his animal nature, striving to retain as much of his old life as he could. The characters were nicely depicted and had depth. They had qualities and flaws; they made good choices and bad ones. I could really see Dylan as a multi-faceted personality, observe his passion for his work,...more

This is the second Kim Fielding book I've read (the first was Brute). It's also the first shapeshifter/werewolf m/m romance I have purchased, and I do not regret it. Good Bones is an enjoyable read that comes off on the "feel good" side for me. The main character Dylan moves away from the city to easier handle the werewolf curse that haunts him once a month. Once he's settled in his new house he finds out that his only close neighbor isn't just attractive but also extremely handy and immediately...more

First off, I would like to thank Netgalley & Dreamspinner Press for approving me to read & review this book.

Let me start with something I didn't see until after I had read Good Bones, the cover. Oy vey. I probably wouldn't have picked it up based on that. It just looks ... amateur. I am not one to usually judge a book by it's cover, or even mention the cover, but just look at it. Ugh.

That being said the book was alright. This was my first m/m werewolf book, so I had no clue what to expec...more

4.5 Drops Review

Dylan is a wolf one day a month. That might not seem a huge problem to most, but considering how his first shift went, Dyl is terrified of himself and instead of running under the moon like a normal were – if there is such a thing – he locks himself in a small room every month. His life is stressful until he comes up with the bright idea of moving to the country so he can roam free when a wolf. When Dyl meets his only neighbour, Chris, he’s not impressed – well, except for his na...more

Good Bones by Kim Fielding is not your usual shifter romance. Fielding's novel looks at the life of the moon-called with a more realistic and genuine eye.In Good Bones, Fielding paints a shifter life as one of isolation, pain, and loneliness. The physical pain of changing from man to wolf is evident. So is the loneliness and isolation brought on by trying to hide an important part of oneself.

Dylan Warner and Chris Nock are the primary characters in Good Bones. Dylan is a young and upcoming archi...more

Good Bones is the first book I’ve read by Kim Fielding and it definitely won’t be my last! I really enjoyed the author’s easy style of writing and ability to sweep this reader up into the intriguing and uniquely written world of her characters. I’ve read many werewolf books and in my opinion, Good Bones, was a refreshing change from the everyday werewolves written in today’s gay romances.

Ever since Dylan was bitten by a werewolf his life has

As noted in my review for Poppy Dennison's Mind Magic, I'm new to the M-M erotic fantasy romance subgenre. However, I've now read three in as many days.

I liked all three, but wasn't entirely kind to the genre in my previous review, noting that on the basis of the first two examples I'd read, one common feature seemed to be horribly written stilted dialog -- though I also said that I found the characterizations largely well-done, and that the genre was likely a new guilty pleasure.

I should have k...more

Werewolf/shapeshifter stories aren't really my thing, but the synopsis caught my eye and seemed interesting. All in all, the story was okay. Dylan is an architect who was bitten by a werewolf a couple of years ago and now has to deal with shifting every full moon. After a few close calls, he decides to move out to the country. He buys a house that needs major renovation and enlists the help of his hot neighbor, Chris, who is a redneck and seemingly uneducated and uncultured. The men forge a relu...more

This book has been on my TBR list for awhile so I finally got around to it. I'm glad I did because I loved this story.

Our hero is a shy, introverted man named Dylan who was recently bitten by a werewolf (some dates just go terribly wrong). The story begins with Dylan in mad dash home during rush hour traffic, in order to make it to his reinforced room before the moon rises. Concerned by one too many close calls such as this, he decides to move out to the country to live a lonely life -- secluded...more

Being a young and talented architect is difficult, especially when you are a werewolf. Dylan loves his job, but he's afraid of hurting people. After too many close calls on the night of the full moon, he decides it's best for a change in scenery. Telecommuting from the country he thinks will satisfy him and his wolf.

What he doesn't count on is his hot neighbor Chris. I really liked Chris. Chris pretends to be dumber than he actually is, has too much machinery lying around, and loves classic ro...more

I would have to say that this is a male romance novel. Boy meets boy falls in love but that whole turning furry on the full moon drives a wedge between them. It follows the same formula as female romance books but the main characters are men, hot men. There are a few pretty hot and heavy sex scenes so if that makes you squeamish this might not be the book for you. I thought it was great. I liked the main characters, the secondary characters and the story was fun.

The werewolf shifting scenes were...more

This is going to be short and sweet, because this story has left me without anything to complain about and without the words to swoon properly. When I read this story I got that feeling I always long for when I’m reading a book, but that is so rare to find. I just felt a sense of completeness when I put it down, and I couldn’t stop smiling. The trope may have been done before, but when it’s done really well that doesn’t matter. Add to this that I’m a huge fan of Teen Wolf and love Shifter storie...more

This was a different take on the Werewolf theme, and that is part of the reason this one didn’t work for me.

(view spoiler)[I like my fantasy werewolves to be fantasy; this one was more real so to speak. The realism in the hunting didn’t work for me. If anything the whole wolf part was too clinical and felt more like a nature programme on wolves habits. As Dylan only changed one night a month there was little Shifting involved. Instead it seemed more like an excuse to turn our hero from a 7stone...more

I loved this book so much. The characters were wonderful and engaging. And even though we only saw the world from Dylan's POV the writing was so good that we really get a sense of who Chris is and what is in his heart.

My favorite thing about this book though, is that both men were definitely MEN, no female characteristics all. It is something I often find in M/M romances. Many times the MALE characters will coo, or giggle, or whimper, or just talk way too much about their feelings - all of which...more

Good Bones was a nice read. I asked myself as I was reading this book what would I have done, if I woke up one morning and found I had turned into a werewolf the night before. How would I deal?, and I think Dylan did a job of dealing with a bad situation. His logical approach of locking himself every full moon and when that proved to problematic. He searched for a more isolated solution I think that is how I would have handle it. What I liked about this story was the support system Dylan had in...more

I've got to be honest. I'm always a little wary of an illustrated cover. But I'm so glad the blurb convinced me to give this book a try, because I ended up really enjoying it.

Dylan is a gay architect who has essentially given up on love ever since he was turned into a werewolf. He's afraid of putting anyone at risk. And not just a potential boyfriend. It's been getting harder and harder to lock himself up during the full moon while living in the city. So he decides to buy a rural old home and re...more

Kim Fielding lives in California and travels as often as she can manage. A professor by day, at night she rushes into a phonebooth to change into her author costume (which involves comfy clothes instead of Spandex and is, sadly, lacking a cape). Her superpowers include the ability to write nearly anywhere, often while simultaneously doling out homework assistance to her children. Her favorite word...more
