I'm so confused about this book. Initially, it starts off pretty strong. Chase and Rachel have a history together. It ends tragically with the death of her father, the circumstances of his death being a mystery. It's now four years later. Rachel has a new job, a new life. Then Chase comes back into town on his treasure hunting boat, chasing the same sunken treasure that her dad died trying to find.

Once the details were laid out and I thought I understood the plot, I started really getting in to...more I'm so confused about this book. Initially, it starts off pretty strong. Chase and Rachel have a history together. It ends tragically with the death of her father, the circumstances of his death being a mystery. It's now four years later. Rachel has a new job, a new life. Then Chase comes back into town on his treasure hunting boat, chasing the same sunken treasure that her dad died trying to find.

Once the details were laid out and I thought I understood the plot, I started really getting in to the story. This author certainly seems to know a lot about scuba diving in deep water. I know absolutely nothing, so I'm not that great a judge, but the terminology and scene setup served to really set me in the middle of the ocean, diving for an ancient Chinese treasure. Not only is there the danger of equipment malfunction (which was awfully prevalent here, more so than usual, I hope) but also nasty gang leaders bent on murder and mayhem.

When the plot started to drag I kept expecting it to pick up. It really should have, as there was plenty of action and intrigue. I couldn't put my finger on why I kept wanting to put the book down. The romance was okay. Not extremely sexy but it was there. I just felt like I didn't really care about anyone. I never got to know anyone very well. Each time I thought I'd understand what the meaning of the book was, the bad guy would turn out to NOT actually be the bad guy. Someone would die, and the REAL bad guy would be revealed. But WAIT! There's this OTHER guy over here who also wants revenge/money/rape.

I think there were too many freaking subplots going on. I like plot twist, but the amount of different lives caught up with Rachel and Chase's fiasco was confusing. It got to the point that I would put the book down and when I picked it back up, I had no idea where I had left off. And I was pushing hard core to just get through it. Many, many people die, and I wasn't all to affected by any of the deaths. There are some moments that I think were supposed to tug on my heartstrings, but I was trying to play catch up to much to notice. Example: There is one scene in which Rachel goes to a hospital and suddenly is having a memory of coming to the hospital when her dad had his accident. There is no segueing to the 'here and now.' From one sentence to the next, she's in a memory and then she's not, and I didn't realize it until I had read two paragraphs. Paragraph breaks are good, mkay?

There is a paranormal element that for me was just a bit too cheesy, and another example of trying to put too much into one book. There was a LOT going on here, folks! As a little disclaimer, maybe I was distracted? It's always possible, but I think this story could have really benefited from having about ten less characters playing such prominent roles. I got very confused.

It was okay. The author had a good idea. Her main characters were likeable, and I would have loved them had they been fleshed out a little more.

He’s hired Trident Ventures to seek the wreck and find the ‘heart of the dragon’, a treasure that is rumored to be worth millions, and is connected to an age-old ghost story and curse. Dr. Ying’s family is connected to the treasure, and if it can be found, it will break the curse that has followed his family for centuries.
Trident Ventures is owned by Chase Cohan, and the search throws the two of them back together again. But that’s not the entire story. This is a dual plot, a ‘meanwhile back at the ranch’ story with a second set of characters.
Devon, Rachel’s brother, has gotten himself involved with thugs and murderers. He has been kidnapped, and if Rachel wants to see him again, she will have to pay the thugs the money his boss ran off with. Her only hope for getting such a large sum of money in short period of time is to join the crew of Trident Ventures, and steal some of the gold from the wrecked ship.
The underwater scenes are mesmerizing. The author knows quite a bit about scuba diving, and paints vivid pictures of what it must be like to go searching the ocean’s depths. There are shark attacks, ghost sightings, landslides, and all sorts of perils in the story, making it a captivating and exciting story. It kept me turning the pages, and taught me things about marine life I didn’t know.
I have two objections, however.
The sex scenes, while few in number and well-spaced, are disgusting. They are much too erotic for my tastes. This type of writing makes me ask the question why some authors think they are above the law? The legal definition of pornography, as relating to pictures and films, is that it shows genitals engaged in a sexual act. If a film producer shot a movie of this scene, the way it was written, he would go to jail for producing hard-core porno. If a photographer from Playboy shot a set the way this scene was described, it wouldn’t be published because it is over the legal line. If equality means that there is one set of rules for everyone, then why is it illegal for a film producer or photographer, but not for an author?
The author’s guidelines for Harlequin and Silhouette, the largest producers of romance novels, state that there are two differences between romance and porn. Romance is about emotions. Porn is about bodily functions. Romance uses physical contact to form and express a committed, monogamous relationship. Porn uses sex to fulfill a physical desire. According to industry standards, this book is a piece of porn. The couples have sex before they say “I love you”, and their reactions to touch are purely physical.
This author names the specific body parts, and mentions practices that are pornographic in nature. I don’t need to know that Chase masturbates to deal with his broken heart. The sex wasn’t all that necessary, and I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if it had been left out altogether, or just limited to a little fore play.
The author assured me that this book is in keeping with Christian standards, and while it does have one Bible verse worked into the story (love bears all, forgives all…) and there is a preacher who speaks about God’s will, this is not a book that a Christian would enjoy. If it was Christian, then what they believe in would have an effect upon the way they behave. They would rely on belief and faith to help them make decisions, and would avoid known sins such as stealing, fornication and lying.
Authors have the power to shape the moral character of our culture. They can shape the reader’s attitudes on a number of issues by the way they address it. In addition to making sex a casual, meaningless encounter, and lying an acceptable practice, the author has the characters tied up, bound, gagged and entangled in so many ways that it almost becomes kinky. Too much bondage can encourage readers to believe that women enjoy being raped. People read stuff like this, and then we wonder why football players end up going to jail because they thought they were getting ‘lucky’.
My second objection is with the ending. Chase and Rachel end up becoming murderers themselves. I lost respect for them when they sank to the same level as the hoods that were trying to kill them. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
The story is about using people to get what you want, even if you have to lie and steal to do it. After reading the book, I feel that I was used too. I told the author I only review sweet and mild books. I said “no” to sex, and she sent it to me anyway.

I hate to admit it, but I have been putting off writing this review.

When I selected the book, several weeks ago, I had high hopes. The teasers are intriguing and I love nothing more than curling up with a good romantic suspense. Something I can just gobble up, like a great mental meal.

Severed Threads is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller with big storylines and many subplots. If you enjoy contemporary adventures with a little romance thrown in for good measure, Severed Threads could be the next novel to add to your to-read list.

The story begins with the death of Sam Lyons, a veteran salvage diver (think treasure hunter) under questionable circumstances. A routine reconnaissance excursion results in his unforeseen death which leaves lingering questions of fault and blame. Was it diver error? Did Sam uncharacteristically make a simple mistake? Or did his partner, Chase Cohen, fail to properly inspect their equipment before their dive?

Flashing forward several years, we meet his daughter Rachel Lyon and former dive buddy, Chase Cohen, who are still grappling with Sam's loss and feelings of guilt associated with his seemingly inexplicable accidental death. Essentially, neither can accept that Sam died while doing something he dearly loved and was clearly one of the best in his field. They know something's fishy regarding the circumstances around his death, but they have no evidence to come to any type of conclusion and resolve their grief.

Rachel and Chase were once an item, but Sam's death changed all that and their love literally became shipwrecked. They both bore the shame of blaming themselves and perhaps Rachel also felt Chase partially responsible as well. The questions surrounding Sam's death is the ultimate wedge between them.

Rachel copes by taking a desk job working for a foundation which funds the very types of explorations her father was known for and then acts as curator for the discovered artifacts. She finds herself thrown back into the family business when her ne'er-do-well brother, Devon, is taken hostage and held for ransom by an odd group of gangsters. She must help find and then steal an ancient artifact as payment for her brother’s release.

There's a lot going on in Severed Threads—almost too much with murders, gangsters, pirates, treasure hunting, an ancient Chinese curse, and even a paranormal connection between our protagonists and a deep sea ghost who lurks around the buried treasure of a sunken Chinese ship. On the other hand, you won't be bored because this story moves at light speed, and that is no easy feat given the many story lines the author had to juggle.

To McFarren's credit, she manages to bring it all together in the end. The author is a great writer and storyteller. Her passion rings through, but when there's so many characters to contend with, character development gets spread a little thin. The author does go a little overboard (pun intended). At times it was hard to keep track of everyone, but don't let this distract you from the flow of the story which is fast and adventurous.

If you keep your focus on Rachel and Chase's story, you'll find that Severed Threads offers a satisfying conclusion and that all secondary storylines are eventually resolved. McFarren also includes a setup for what appears to be the next installment in the exploits of Chase Cohen and Rachel Lyons and their treasure hunting excursions.

In the classic dive novel, one of the main characters is after shipwrecks – or more accurately, sunken treasure: a very specific treasure. And treasure is most definitely at the heart of this one, but for far more reasons than money – this hunt is both close to the heart and quite possibly deadly.

At the start, we’re assured that handsome Chase Cohen can ‘remain focused on a purpose.’ In a way, he does, but his ‘purpose’ distracts him from immediate – and life threatening – situation. That error threatens his ruin in so many ways. So focused, yet easily distracted. We will discover this is consistent to his character.

Rachel – who when we first meet, seems not so much despondent as harsh and cold, is also deceptive. She’s burdened with guilt and stubbornly clinging to blame as well. However, the opening is so cleverly written, we as readers cannot help but sympathize with both the main characters, from the start.

Severed Threads connects on an emotional level almost immediately. The twists of the plot tangle one almost as quickly. Whatever treasure lies out there, it is luring more than just honorable salvage companies, and has interested more than pleasant little maritime museums.

Rachel is forced in a more active role …not because of some thought out plan, and not because she is finally swayed to a different point of view. No spoilers here! But the story takes a fast turn and suddenly Rachel is much more involved than she ever anticipated. We are clinging to the seats at this point, wondering if she’ll ever deduce what really happened… and if Chase’s undertaking will be the end of all of them. And Chase – true to form, almost misses the treasure, he’s so distracted by the moment.

Irregularly presented chapters from lesser characters interrupted the connection to the storyline in an annoying way – they furthered the story but seemed to bumble in, intrusively. The sizzle in this case was window-dressing.

Undoubtedly the high points of this story were: believable and interesting characters and the unpredictable story line. (less)

Rachel is asked to help with the recovery of an 800-year-old Chinese merchant vessel. Her gut reaction and intention is to say no, no and more no especially when Rachael understands that, she’s being manipulated and ambushed by Dr. Ying, a close friend of her father.

Rachel doesn’t want to work, see or be anywhere near Chase Cohen and Dr. Ying knows it, being fully aware of their history. Chase is firmly on the other side of that segregation line between her old life and her current incarnation. And, like salt in a wound, this venture, this dive is the type of tomfoolery her father was doing on his final dive. No, Rachael wants nothing to do with any of it. But, theatrical events force her hand, among those events, the kidnapping of her brother.

Severed Threads is a sweeping story, with sunken ships, exotic locations, curses, gangsters and buried treasure. The story is paced to keep the reader turning the page. However, there’s so much going on it can be difficult to follow. Here, there, plot and subplots, it’s not clear how it all fits together. There’s potential here and I want to say I love this book. I really do! But Severed Threads is like a movie with great cinematography, but the story’s not so great. There is just too much going on.

Kaylin McFarren’s “writers brush” strokes are wide. Her descriptions of places, things and people are well done. "The missing" is the small brush strokes, the emotional connections that act as the mortar of a story, the emotional glue that causes readers to invest in characters. For me, more than the confusion of the story was my inability to care about any of the characters. I’m giving Severed Threads 3 stars for having great potential.

Chase, who had loved him like a father, feels responsible and doesn’t know what to make of it. Did something malfunction or did something scare Sam down there? He'd been an experienced diver with over 20 years of experience under his belt. What had Chase missed? Sam was the only man Chase had allowed himself to trust. He and his daughter Rachel were the only two people he really cared for. But now all had changed: Sam was dead, and Rachel would forever blame him for his death.

Move four years forward. Rachel Lyons, Sam’s Daughter, is working at a grant foundation. All is pretty quiet and routine in her life…until she’s approached by a museum director asking for a grant to conduct another diving salvage operation, run by none other than Chase’s Trident Ventures.

Though Rachel has no intention of helping Chase, Chase is set on convincing her. Since the operation focuses on discovering the Wanli II, if they succeed, her father would receive his long overdue reward and the museum would fund a permanent exhibition to honor his memory.

Yet, Rachel is still hesitant. Then, a twist of fate puts Rachel's brother in danger, forcing her to change her mind about funding Chase's project. Chase is more than suspicious about her sudden change of heart, but he isn't about to say no to this opportunity which could help him leave his mark upon the world as a renowned treasure hunter.

Thus, she grants him the money and insists on joining the underwater expedition. Can she put aside pride and work with Chase on a daily basis?

Severed Threads is an engaging, entertaining read! I've always enjoyed stories about lost treasures and underwater archaeology and this one didn't disappoint. The hero and heroine are realistic and sympathetic and there's a sizzling chemistry between them. The plot is believable with a fair share of exciting twists and turns. I found the workings of a grant foundation and a diving salvage operation quite interesting and informative. Pacing is fairly quick with a nice balance of action, dialogue, description and the inner thoughts of the characters.

In short, Severed Threads is an exciting novel featuring danger in the high seas, romance, action and adventure, murder, and even a sprinkle of the paranormal for good measure. Recommended.

“Severed Threads” by new author Kaylin McFarren definitely lives up to its “Romantic Suspense” genre listing. At two hundred and eighty-three pages it’s a fairly quick read and I found it to be interesting and well-written. I would also hazard a guess and say that McFarren holds some level of scuba certification as her underwater scenes are portrayed both accurately and knowledgeably.

As I began reading my copy of “Severed Threads” I was happy to find that the first chapter was an adventuresome “prequel” of sorts. Personally, I always enjoy when authors provide their readers with an earlier stage of the tale they are about to share.

In “Severed Threads” Rachel Lyons, the book’s main female character, lost her father Sam in a diving accident four years ago. It seems that she has never been able to completely close that chapter of her life and it doesn’t help that the coroner could never provide a specific reason for Sam’s untimely demise. Ultimately Rachel feels responsible for his death and, not knowing how to properly cope with his loss, she has removed herself from the beauty of the underwater world; settling instead for a desk job at a foundation office.

Unfortunately for Rachel, museum director Dr. Ying and…old friend of her father’s schedules a meeting with her to discuss his grant request; the grant request focused on finding the mythical Chinese merchant ship the Wanlii II; the same ship that cost her father his life. Needless to say Rachel wants nothing to do with this obviously cockamamie and crazy endeavor especially since there isn’t any hard proof to substantiate the wreck’s supposed final resting place. During Rachel’s logical attempt to explain this to Dr. Ying she is stopped short when Chase Cohen, her old boyfriend and the man who was her father’s dive buddy that fateful day four years ago, walks through the door. What follows is an intriguing tale of mystery, deception and murder...

In summary, “Severed Threads” was a well-written compilation of convoluted plots, intrigue, and paranormal; I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys any of the above genres.(less)

An adventure story with everything you could ask for. A story of buried treasure with a curse over it, gangsters who want their stolen money back, a salvage operator on the brink of bankruptcy and the beautiful heroine who wants to find the treasure to honor her dead father.

If you haven’t already heard me say it before, I love, love suspense books that keep me guessing – and in the new book “Severed Threads” by author Kaylin McFarren, you will find just that!

The first chapter of the book gives you a very good back-story so you learn more about what shaped the meat of the book. I always appreciate when an author does this because it helps get me more interested from the beginning.

This is a really long book. I read really fast and breeze through a book if I like it, Severed Threads was no different! I was hooked because my older brother is an Archeologist, sometimes he even brings back goodies from his digs! This novel literally has you spell bounded from the very first chapter. I never really connected with the characters in the book. I suspect because there were times in the book when I was totally confused. Scenes weren't set up as well as they could have been. Sometimes there was too much detail (I didn't really need to know about the cockeyed lamp in the hero's apartment), and sometimes not enough (The warehouse wasn't threatening enough).

Fight scenes are hard to write and I have to admit I had trouble following some of them in this book and a few made me snicker....more

Severed Threads is the first in a series involving treasure hunters Rachel Lyons and Chase Cohen. Rachel and Chase have a history. After Rachel's father died in a diving accident, Chase disappeared out of her life with no explanation. Now he is back asking for her help.

Overall, I did enjoy the story. Chase and Rachel have a great chemistry together. I did find myself rooting for them to get back together. The book has a lot of action and some mystery to it. I liked both as well as a few twists...more

First of all, Kaylin did a great job at keeping your attention and helping the story flow. She laid out the ground work from the beginning by giving a great amount of details into the backstory of where Kaylin's feelings and emotions where coming from. Secondly, everyone who has had to deal with grief and trying to make sense of what seems like chaos can relate to this character. The whole time I was reading Severed Threads I was like ahhh 4 stars, no 5 stars, no 4 stars, no 5 stars! lol I HAD to give it 5 stars based soley on the fact that it was action packed, interesting, and unpredictable! I never knew what was going to happen next, which is awesome and hard to find sometimes.

Severed Threads written by Kaylin McFarren is a Must Read 5 out of 5!

Both suspenseful and romantic, the plot moves quickly and carries the reader to unsuspected places. The characters are believable, likable, full of human motivation and feelings. Although a few lines seem a bit cliché, the overall writing and storyline are well done and worth the time to read.

Severed Threads is a wonderful new book by award winning author, Kaylin McFarren. The author has done an amazing job with the characters and story line. Readers will be amazed at how gripping this work really is.

Really interesting tale that had my attention the whole time. The pace was wonderful and the characters engaging. Beautiful storytelling that entertained the whole time!

Kaylin McFarren is a rare bird indeed. Not a migratory sort, she prefers to hug the West Coast and keep family within visiting range. Although she has virtually been around the world, she was born in California, relocated with her family to Washington, and nested with her husband in Oregon. In addition to playing an active role in his business endeavors, she has been involved in all aspects of their three daughters' lives - taxi duties, cheerleading coaching, script rehearsals, and relationship counseling, to name but a few. Now she enjoys spending undisciplined time with her two young grandsons and hopes to have many more.

Although Kaylin wasn't born with a pen in hand like so many of her talented fellow authors, she has been actively involved in both business and personal writing projects for many years. As the director of a fine art gallery, she assisted in furthering the careers of numerous visual artists who under her guidance gained recognition through promotional opportunities and in national publications. Eager to spread her own creative wings, she has since steered her energy toward writing novels. As a result, she has earned more than a dozen literary awards and was a 2008 finalist in the prestigious RWA® Golden Heart contest.

Kaylin is a member of RWA, Rose City Romance Writers, and Willamette Writers. She received her AA in Literature at Highline Community College, which originally sparked her passion for writing. In her free time, she also enjoys giving back to the community through participation and support of various charitable and educational organizations in the Pacific Northwest.

FUN TIDBITS

She is proud of the fact that her great aunt Bessie B. Cordell, an evangelistic missionary during WWII, was instrumental in opening an orphanage in Tientsin, China and also wrote two published novels, Precious Pearl and Blossoms of the Flowery Kingdom, documenting her dangerous, harrowing experiences.

She keeps a glass of wine close by while writing love scenes, Kleenex on her desk while writing heart breakers, and has been known to empty a box of chocolates when she's completely stumped.

A consummate "pantser" and perfectionist, she writes and edits as she goes, and uses photographs of models and actors from tabloid magazines to visualize her characters.

She loves her husband of 36 years dearly. However, if Brad Pitt or Orlando Bloom came knockin', well... their marriage just might be put to the test.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

Kaylin sat before her computer writing FLAHERTY'S CROSSING as a source of personal therapy after losing her beloved father to colon cancer. You might say she was angry at him, at God, at the world in general. However, after writing this story, she had the opportunity to really look into her soul and consider the fact that so many other sons and daughters have had to deal with similar and even worse situations. Rather than a memoir, her novel evolved into a fictional journey which brought about the resolution she needed to find. She never expected this exercise in writing to go to press, touch lives, or win literary awards. But as a result of her good fortune, she has arranged for proceeds from the sale of this book to go directly to the Providence Medical Foundation's colon cancer research department in her father's name. She's now convinced and proudly shares her belief that good things can grow out of the worst times in our lives if you just take the time to open your heart.(less)
