Young adult paranormal romance genre from Lyrical Press.

It opens in fairly typical young adult fiction style with a new boy (Grant) at school whose gorgeous – he also has a hot pal (Connor). Kyla Ashbury is nearing her eighteenth birthday when a mysterious boy appears at school. Her instant attraction to him surprises her and she notices that he seems to be attracted to her and yet remains unfailingly polite. As always there's the school rich bitch, stunning beauty who decides Grant belongs to her whether he wants it or not. Some great lines came form the conflict between them. Its good to have some sharp dialogue and conflict set among the romance – it makes so much more interest in the story.
Grant and Connor have a strange tale to tell Kyla about herself and parentage, and just as all is revealed they also discover her life is in danger and she needs to escape quickly – into Faeryland! There she meets Liam, Faery Prince and discovers her future has been planned out in a way she didn't expect. Life takes some strange turns and for Kyla some big decisions are to be made – does she choose Romance or Safety. No matter which path she chooses, someone will get hurt.

It's well written and edited and the story paces along quickly with enough twists to keep the reader engrossed. The plots are well fleshed out and the characters quickly turn from print on a page to real characters you care about. The ending ties up neatly but also leaves space for a new book without the horrible cliffhanger ends I hate. Its 222 pages for £3.80 its not cheap compared to what else is available at that price, but if you're a young adult book fan then its one you'll want to re read so works out better value on my cost per read scale (CPR = price divided by number of times you'll re read).
I don't usually look at covers – I know to some people they are very important but to me its content all the way but I have to say just how much I Love the dress on what is presumably Kyla on the cover of this one. There were some beautiful descriptions of her faery-land clothes inside too.

Stars: 4, its a stroll on the unusual side of paranormal romance having no vampires, some shape-changers but lots of magic and faeries. Its well worth reading if you're a fan of YA fiction ( I’m not generally) and for them it would probably rate a 5 star. (less)

Wow! Loved this book! Even though chapters are a great place to stop and take a break (you know, to eat and sleep and stuff like that), I found that I couldn’t put this book down! I had to know what was going to happen next. According to the author’s website, there’s a book two to follow Gossamer. YAY! I love series! Here’s a few of my favorites....

FAVORITE QUOTE: My infatuation with him grew exponentially by the second, which I was fully aware seemed to be a delicate mix of psychotic and pathetic.

STEAMY MOMENT: There is a constant tug-of-war between Kylie and Grant’s attraction.... Does he like me? Does he not? Is there something? Is there nothing? Then tension made me read into the wee-hours of morn just to see how they resolved their flirting. As a mom in my thirties, this book did a good job of keeping me interested in their attraction and I thought Renita Pizzitola mastered the culmination of all their pinned-up sexual tension in a moving scene rated perfectly for young adults: neither going to far nor holding back.

FAVORITE HEART-FELT MOMENT - (SPOILER): Kylie finding out she’s a fae is a moving scene (her personal reaction to the news is quite emotional), but I really felt ‘hearts’ when she approached the couple whom she believed to be her parents and the love and no-hard-feelings conversation that resulted didn’t lessen their relationship but rather strengthened it. It’s so nice to read a young-adult/new adult book that doesn’t toss the parents aside or shed them in a negative light. As an adoptive mom, this scene was very touching (((hugs, hugs, hugs, to the author for the positive adoption vibe whether intentional or not))).

This book is hard to rate – on one hand, it’s a bundle of paranormal teen book clichés (hello, insta-love, love triangle, uber-protective hottie, I-hear-I’m-pretty-but-i-really-don’t-think-so-myself-but-gosh-darn-do-these-boys-seem-to-love-me AKA speshul snowflake syndrome, aaand… well you get the picture), but on the other hand, it did keep me reading all the way through, and there were some parts that I actually liked.

The best friend, Lexie, is actually a good person. With a working brain and a good heart. Even a love-interest is thrown her way. Lexie even kind of sort of reminded me of Zuzana from Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but … well, no one is as awesome as Zuzana. It’s nice in these books to have a best friend who isn’t a)insecure, b) sorta bitchy, c) sorta slutty (I don’t know why on earth they keep doing this…), d) not really a friend.
I do wish Kyla had more character and a bit more backbone. Not need to be bitchy or cold or emotionally dead, but when your life is turned upside-down, please stop for just one moment debating does-he-or-odes-he-not love you in your head, it’s off-putting. Does kind of put your priorities under a strange light. Kyla was an alright lead, but in truth, almost all the secondary characters seemed to have more personality.
Grant was… well, he is seemingly perfect in every which way. Sure, he seemed like a sweet guy. (Also, I was only hit on the head with his godly-good-looks once or twice in the beginning of the book - it almost seemed as if the author believed that I was able to grasp that this is one good-looking guy just after one or two descriptions.) I am getting tired of this protective-hottie thing in chic-lit though, whether is ya or not. I do wish Grant had actually spoken more, he seemed like a funny guy, but unfortunately standard mopeyness got in the way. Please stop moping, put a bag over your super-natural good looks and prove for once that love interests in ya can be more than good lookin' space fillers! A sense of humor seems underrated, but that does not stop the leading lads in YA lit to keep quirking their lips and crooking their eyebrows every which way. Thank you Grant for keeping these somewhat under control.
There were enough good things to keep me from giving the book just 1 star. For fairy-lore romance, I would still recommend The Iron Fey -books by Julie Kagawa over this book, but let’s see if the next installment will win me over. Some juicy world-building (as well as back-bone building), and I think it’ll be on a good track. More Lexie. Or actually, just let her take over. Her or Grant. Or her and Conor. And Grant.

Kyla is blown away by the things that she learns and at first really doesn't believe what she's hearing but after her parents confirm that what Grant is saying is true she has no choice but to accept it. And so she sets out with Grant and his friend Conor on a journey that will be filled with adventure, self discovery, magic, family, temptation, love and desire.

Gossamer was a really strong start to the series and I read it in almost one sitting. I really enjoyed the characters and the Fae world that Renita Pizzitola has created. The attraction and heat between Kyla and Grant was sizzling at times but of course things don't run smoothly. Grant has a job to do and tends to hold back his feelings and Kyla would second guess his actions and the things that he said, so instead of talking they would skirt around things and avoid talking about what they were both feeling which lead to some pretty tense times between them. Talk about sending each other mixed signals!! I really loved the secondary characters as well and am looking forward to learning more of their story in the next book. And I think things are about to get a whole lot more intense going by the ending that we have in this one. And I for one can't wait to read it!!

4/5 Stars!!

Kyla is definitely the type of teenage girl that many of us identify with. She's a bit shy, has an awesome best friend who pulls her into new situations, and she feels like a lot of teenage girls--awkward! I really enjoyed this book. Was rooting for Kyla and Grant the whole time but at the same time my heart goes out to the prince. Cant wait to see what the king has in store for this couple.
