I was recently invited to read this novel to gauge my thoughts as an English teacher and I have to say it exceeded my expectations. This is the sort of novel I wish every teenager had the opportunity to read. It covers the trivial teenage dramas to the intense, life-changing, coming-of-age challenges. Elizabeth is a strong and complex character and testament to the fact that almost all teenagers who are difficult/rebellious have a good reason for it. I actually read this for the first time years ago, but I re-read it again recently and loved it just as much. I can't believe this is the author's first novel and that she started it so young as it really is a great book. The characters are interesting and real, and the story, particularly towards the end, is really compelling. I also loved that it's unashamedly Australian and doesn't hide from raw emotions. Another great book by Trudy Adams - loved the scenery, internal tension of the main character and the unexpected turns. Also loved the theme of fire throughout the book - Eliza's fiery temper, fire as a destructive force, as a cleanser, Judy's 'burn out' and so on.
