Kathy * Bookworm Nation

This started off pretty exciting. Katherine has recently arrived from England as a mail-order-bride. Her fiancé wants to sample things before they marry and when Katherine refuses he beats her pretty badly. She runs away and ends up stumbling onto Gray’s property and protection. I liked Gray and Kat, but felt things were a little off. I mean, one minute they are slowly building a friendship, but still have misunderstandings. Then after one kiss they are suddenly a couple. It was weird; I kept

This was a wonderful book full of mystery and love. The story and characters are engaging and draw you into their world. Kat is a wonderful character who is trying to take control of her life and her future despite her circumstances. Gray is a dark character - haunted by his past but still a sweet and great character. The romance was sweet and natural and left me rooting for their love. Amazing realism in the events, emotions and reactions of all involved. The plot unfolded while keeping you eng ...more

The book did have a pretty decent story line but I felt it was under developed. The love between the main characters was really given no foundation and it never fully unfolded during the book. Just one day Grey decided he all the sudden loved her after minimum interaction? The cover is somewhat a tease and there really isn't any romance that occurs during This book. Also the way Reese exited the book was very strange, really no rhyme or reason but to find the easiest way to get him out of the wa ...more

Hampton, Virginia August 1752

Katherine “Kat” Bailey has come from England to what she hopes is going to be her future. She has come to Virginia as a Mail Order Bride and being without money she knows her options are limited. Kat quickly finds out that the man she has agreed to wed and that is considered to be very honorable in town is not what he claims and pretends to be. Beaten by her intended Kat runs to the one man that just might be able to save and protect her, Grayson Gregory. The one man

This is NOT 50 Shades of Grey
Thank you for the recommendation, You nailed this one.

First, who are those people on the front of this book? Both the Hero and heroine of the book I read are blondes. The H has long hair - like wear in a pony-tail, long. Not sure what that cover is all about, unless it is to confuse potential readers who are looking for 50 Shades?

But, I enjoyed the book. There were some parts that weren't fleshed out, so I wasn't sure exactly what was goin

I really couldn't decide on 2 or 3 stars. I finally had to give it two even though I felt mean. I think it could have been a really good story...but I felt like it dragged so much of the time that I had to keep speed reading and skipping over parts that were very tedious. I also felt like there were outright inconsistencies. And Kat was just downright annoying at times and unbelievably intrusive for someone in her situation. Anyway, I just didn't care for it.

(Oh, and I tried the audiobook first

No, this is not The Shades of Grey that is on all the best seller lists right now.
This is a clean romance with some dark undertones, hardship to endure, secrets to uncover and happiness to find.
The story is set in 1752 in Hampton, Virginia. Grayson Gregory is a man with a past. Katherine Bailey seeks refuge from him when she is badly beaten and runs away from her fiance. He takes her in, bandages her wounds and protects her. As they open up to each other, they have the opportunity to create a n

Shelves: drama, romance
While I liked both the leading characters is this book, I found that sometimes their behaviour was inconsistent, as was the behaviour of a number of the other characters. Also there was too much detail in some places, which made the read a slow one. I also found the wording awkward at times, and the story seemed disjointed.

This book started out a little slow for me. I actually put it down at one point and read something else. I picked it back up with fresh perspective and I am so glad I did. The book really picked up and I was swept up in the story of Kat and a Gray. A book about love and sacrifice. I certainly recommend.

Loved the story! It had everything I like all rolled into one: romance, humor, action, & mystery. Parts of it had me smiling and other parts had me holding my breath! Shades of Gray is a great story!
