Felicity Lennie took me into her novel on the first few pages. I can still picture a 'rocky sea,' a 'sky lark hovering over the gorse-covered cliff, its evening song piercing the balmy breeze.' It felt as if I were the running figure who stopped to catch his breath and 'take in the phenomenal view.' What happened next happened to this runner, though, caught me unawares and brought me back down to earth, to a realization of unexpected events that occur in life. The plot began.

I'm giving this book 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5). I feel as if I've just been to Cornwall and made some wonderful new friends. The title character is so human and likeable, I became very invested in cheering for him in his investigation of a celebrity's questionable death and more and more anxious as his questions made his situation more and more precarious. The setting is so well drawn one can see and hear and smell the details of the village and the seacoast. The ending felt somewhat rushed, a ...more
