A strange man interrupts the attempted robbery of Countess Elaina Montague. He's an American who claims to be looking for his brother. In gratitude, the Countess introduces him to Sherlock Holmes, who could certainly help him, although he's currently busy trying to solve some mysterious jewel robberies. But neither the American nor his quest are what they appear, and some of the other characters are hiding parts of their past as well. This is actually a fair Sherlock Holmes pastiche, but ...more

I'll pick up just about any book with the name Sherlock Holmes in the title and I did only pay one dollar for this book but it wasn't any good. The Minnesota adventures that Holmes and Watson took, which were written by Larry Millett I believe, inspired me to give this book a chance. I did finish it, but the true identity of the mysterious Mr. Howard pretty much ruined it. Had Mr. Howard been able to keep his secret awhile longer, and had he not become so involved with the countess, this might ...more

This is one of those books that I wanted to like more than I did. I didn't really feel that the author really captured the essence of Holmes and Watson, and the third person narration didn't help. Then there was the time frame issue, which really bugged me. Holmes and Watson met in 1881 and Jesse James, who makes an appearance, died in April of 1882, and yet Watson thinks at one point "in all the years he had known Holmes..." Really?

A decent story with fair characterizations, but there were plot faults, particularly in the ending. Given that a crime was committed, I do not believe Holmes would have acted as depicted in the ending, nor do I believe the perpetrator would have committed that crime for someone else. Still, I enjoyed it.
