Building on themes introduced in the author’s previous novel, this collection of 12 short stories further explores the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. The array of stories includes “Spilt Milk,” in which an ordinary fare leads an Indo-Canadian taxi driver, who is unhappy with his current circumstances, to marry his passenger’s unattractive sister. What a remarkable, disturbing, satisfying collection of short stories. The novella at the end was a real treat. A novella is not easy to pull off -- it needs a longer arc than a short story and, for me, characters that I want to spend more time with than those in a short story. Some of the characters in Baggio's stories are not necessarily people I want to get to know too well -- they are fascinating, occasionally repugnant, charming, quirky -- but do I want to invite them to dinner? Pretty impressive. I picked this up because of a Toronto Star article and it more than lived up to the good review. The theme of everyone being creatures trapped within the shells of our bodies permeates the collection, but always approached from different angles.

Allison Baggio's second book, In The Body, is a fascinating collection of short stories and a novella. Thematically drawn together by the idea of the body, how it can both support and betray us, these stories resonate with intriguing characters and situations. As the parent of teens, I felt she nailed the characterizations of both the teens and their parents in the stories Saving Katie and As She Was. Of all the stories, however, I think the most fun is Possessed, the almost-horror tale of a man...more

The overworked words and the coordinate conjunction sentence-starters need editing.
I received this book free through the goodreads FIRST READS program.

On the whole an enjoyable read. Some stories were more compelling and felt more complete than others. I was sorry when I reached the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of short stories and novella. I think this work was even stronger than her debut novel. Her stories are thought-provoking ... I would have liked to see some of the stories go deeper and darker (e.g. Face Like This)--the characters were interesting so I was left wanting to know more about what happened after the stories ended. Maybe a return visit with these characters in future works? Or an epilogue on some of those characters (like Theo from One Too Many or...more
