This is a well written, well thought out murder/crime mystery. The author's style is easy, like listening to an old friend tell a story. A very good story it is too. Lyle is the main protagonist, a deputy in a small town who has lost his wife, the love of his life, to divorce. After that, his enthusiasm for the job just isn't there. I received this book as a First Reads Winner.

I wish there was a category for 4.5 stars.

Joel Jurrens has wriiten just the type of mystery novel I enjoy: flawed characters, not too much gore, easy to read. He's a decent guy trying to do a good job even though his heart has been crushed and he no longer loves the job the way he once did. And then there are the twists this plot takes, right up to the very last page. Unlike Perry Mason where the perp suddenly jumps up and confesses in th ...more

Joel Jurrens worked twenty-five years in law enforcement. He tries to bring a realism-the way it really happens-to his stories.
