Someone’s going to have to let down their guard…

Football star Cole Riley is notorious for doing as he pleases—on the field and off. He parties hard and fights harder, but if he doesn’t clean up his act, his career is over—so Cole reluctantly agrees to work with image makeover consultant Savannah Brooks. He’s not used to being told what to do, especially by some (admittedly...more

Shelving for Now: I'm disappointed. I've waited all year for this book to come out! I'm ten chapters in and I still feel no connection to Cole or Savannah. Cole's short-fuse and whiny attitude isn't sexy. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why he's so closed-off. I don't fully buy into their chemistry (which was lukewarm through nine chapters) either. Darn it!

I'm shelving this one and may come back to it at a later time.

Wow. Yet another winner in Jaci Burton's Play By Play series...I don't know how she does it but keep 'em comin', Jaci!

In Playing To Win we get bad boy NFL wide receiver Cole Riley-- cousin to Mick (The Perfect Play), Gavin (Changing the Game), and Jenna (Taking a Shot) Riley. Twenty-nine year old Cole is 6 feet 200+ pounds of gorgeousness, but he has a fatal flaw--his self control. His short fuse has gotten him into trouble with the media, and has NFL teams giving up on him (despite his football...more

I couldn't help but picture Tom Brady as Cole Riley! Typical much?:P

Although football superstar Cole Riley excels both on the field and with the ladies, he falters big time in dealing with the press and the public! When his public image needs severe brush up, Savannah Brookes is just the magical PR lady hired by the team to do the job. But never did she imagine avoiding the super magnetic charm and killer good looks of this Riley would be such a...more

Let's start with the cover of this book first, shall we?

Next, let's move onto Cole Riley...

"With his inky black hair and gorgeous, well-toned and muscular body, he stood out, even if he did wear his hair a little long and shaggy."

And how about that Savannah Brooks?

AND those hot sex scenes?!?!

That pretty much sums up this book for me. Loved everything about it. Cole needs to marry me. And all of you need to read this damn good book.

Favorite Quote: “He took her breath away.”

Talented wide receiver Cole Riley should have the world at his feet, but his antics on and off the field have made him a liability. His agent tells him to shape up or else he’s done. Image consultant Savannah Brooks has agreed to help Cole clean up his image but isn’t sure she can take the bad out of this aggressively sexy man. When the sparks start to fly, Savannah lays down a few rules; hands...more

Whenever an author combines my love of romance with my dedication to all things sports, it’s a match made in heaven. When Burton does it, I get all warm and tingly on the inside.

Cole is a wild-child and not known for his teamwork, instead he’s built his career on a reputation that is making him less and less desirable for agents and owners alike. He’s got an attitude problem, a problem with authority, and a general dist...more

Look at that cover!!!!! I'm going out of my MIND looking at it!!!!! Yummy... I'm such a book cover whore, I wonder if that is that hunk Jed Hill again. For that cover alone I'll give the book 5 stars!!! I'm shallow, I admit it! Really looking forward to this story!

Cole Riley is a hotshot Wide Receiver for a fictional St. Louis Traders NFL team. He’s been recently traded despite having a record season with Green Bay. The problem? He’s got an image problem. His reputation as a hothead, narcissistic, egoist has worked against him. He wants his stats to speak for him, but his defensive reaction to the media has made him a team liability. In comes Savannah Brooks, an image specialist. She is hired by Cole’s new agent, Elizabeth Darnell (from Changing...more

Playing to Win is the fourth book in Jaci Burton’s Play by Play series, Cole Riley hasn’t had any luck with longevity with his football teams. After being traded to his 3rd NFL Team, Cole needs to clean up his image. In comes Savannah Brooks, a Georgia Peach who’s an expert at making over an image. Cole doesn't think that there’s anything wrong with his image. If his image is tainted, it’s because of the media, not him. Savannah’s job is to convince Cole to knock that chip off his shoulder and t...more

Es...more

Eh. I liked the plot. I liked the characters. I liked the chemistry. What I didn't like were some of the scenes. Now, as a reader, I've read many sex scenes. We all have. That's nothing new in romance novels-they're not complete without at least one of them. But this was the first time that I read a masturbating scene (is that considered a spoiler? I mean, it's not like I'm giving away the ending, right?). And was just awkward. Yes, I know "everyone does it" but I really don't want to read that....more

I had to go straight to Playing to Win, the synopsis for me was more appealing than the third one.
What I’m realizing do, is that every one of the books are similar. And that is leaving me with a wish to go on and not read anymore of the series. The stories are very similar, the sex scenes to, the female characters always taste like mint, the guys always say the exact same thing to the girls. There is not a palpable difference between all the stories.
I liked Gavin`s and Liz`s story, they had a d...more

This is a continuation of the Play by Play series. Cole Riley is a cousin to the Riley's in the first three books. Like his cousin Mick, he plays in the NFL. But, whereas his cousin is a good guy in the league, Cole is most definitely one of the bad boys...altercations off the field, no love lost between him and the media and standoffish with his teammates. He's a terrific wide out on the field but is a PR nightmare and as a result has been traded from team to team.
His new agent, his old one dro...more

I’ve been on a sports kick since my winter break started from school. My husband, being the amazing partner that he is, got me the perfect gift–a giftcard to iBooks–where I was able to get the full Play-By-Play series by Jaci Burton. I know I’m reading them out of order, but I don’t really care. They don’t typically have too much information given away, so I don’t feel that any of the stories are ruined by reading out of sequence.

This story introduces us to Cole Riley, a wide-receiver who’s bee...more

Playing to Win is a book about a super hot bad boy NFL player that has a short fuse that's about to cost him his job. This is where Savannah Brooks comes in. Savannah is hired to help him change his attitude and clean up his image. But attitude and image is not what's on Cole Riley's mind. Savannah is a beautiful southern blonde beauty that's Cole's last chance. But Cole's difficult behavior and bad boy reputation may be more than what Savannah bargains for. Not only is Cole a spoiled jerk of an...more

Fourth in the Play-by-Play sports romance series revolving around the Rileys and their friends in St. Louis.

My Take
I really dislike sports, but I really enjoy this series. Burton has a way of putting heart into this with warm family ties and an inside look behind the scenes of the sport she's targeting. In this case, it's football with an exploration of what makes one team trade out a player. It makes a nice break from all the business billionaires running about in the romance genre.

In this one,...more

I did not expect to like this so much. I love this book! I love the character development. The development between Cole and Savannah's relationship was great! Love it so much! Cole changed a lot in this book. He's development is very obvious. He started off not caring about his public actions, he doesn't care about the consequences of his actions. In the end, Savannah did change him. Not just his image but also his life. Oh! I like that in the beginning, Cole like drinking beer and stuff and whi...more

Wow! Not only does this book have a great cover, but the story line is wonderful as well. Burton has hit her stride with this book. It has the hot scenes we have become familiar with, along with much better character development than in her past books. I reviewed the last book, "Taking a Shot" here, and did not have kind things to say about it. The opposite is true of this book. The H/H were well developed, their story line is believable, and it is a very enjoyable book. However, the communicati...more

It can be difficult to remember that there is an actual story taking place in these books because the sex is so hot, and in the first two books, the hot scenes came early in the stories. In this book, the hotness doesn't happen until the story and the characters are more established, which can leave the more rabid fans feeling like they are missing something. I certainly felt that way, but I have to give credit where credit is due because Burton establishes the characters and the stakes long bef...more

The 4th installment in the play by play series by Jaci Burton did not disappoint! I was already half in love with Cole even before his book and he only got better and better throughout his story.

Savannah was hired by the Traders to “fix” Cole Riley. He’s the new guy who has been let go and picked up by multiple teams. He’s good but it seems as though no one really wants him.
Savannah is there to get him into shape, not physically but mentally. He’s got a bad attitude and isn’t shy about what he...more

Just finished reading the ARC that I received from Goodreads Giveaways for this book. (Thank you Jaci!!) This is not my first Jaci Burton, but my first in this series. I debated picking up the rest of the series first, but instead gave this a shot and was not disappointed. This book is written as part of the series so if you have enjoyed the previous three books, you will enjoy the characters in this book. If you have not read the previous books, you aren't missing anything for the plot line in...more

This wasn't by favorite in the series but it was good nonetheless. Cole and Savannah had their own separate issues of trust but somehow they overcame them and feel in love with each other.I loved that we got interaction with previous characters in the series as well. The dynamics in the Riley family is awesome! The sex scenes were hot but they didn't over shadow the story that much.

All in all it was a good book. I can't wait for the next one!

I have grown to expect extraordinarily hot, pushy alpha males who know how to get down and D-I-R-T-Y while dealing with some pretty heavy emotional turmoil in Jaci Burton's Play by Play series. But Playing to Win, while still a great read with a great hero and heroine, didn't quite pack the same punch that we've had in the other books.

Cole Riley, cousin to Mick, Gavin and Jenna, has just been traded to St. Louis as a last ditch effort to keep him playing. His performance on the field ha...more

Jaci Burton’s Play by Play books are books you can definitely judge by their covers!

Cole Riley is the bad boy of the NFL and a ladies man, his reputation has caught up to him and in a Hail Mary attempt to save his career his agent, Liz, calls in image consultant, Savannah Brooks. Savannah Brooks is determined to clean up Cole’s image because it would be a huge boost to her career.

When Savannah and Cole first meet the attraction is sizzling. Savannah is det...more

Scared to start this because of all the bad reviews. The only book I've even enjoyed was Changing the Game. Had high hopes for Taking a Shot, but it sucked. *sigh* Well, it's due back at the library in a few days, so I'm going to just give it a go...

Edit - Horrible book. Everything about it. I only gave it a star because of the parts with Elizabeth. She was the only thing I enjoyed. I don't know why I continue to read books by Jaci. They're always written so bad. The dialogue is always so damn...more

I've read all the play-by-play books and in my opinion this is the weakest of the series, which was disappointing because I was so looking forward to its release. Both Savannah and Cole are very like able, however, Savannah is really hot and cold and a bit of a cock tease, frankly. One minute she's adamantly refusing to jeopardize her career by sleeping with Cole and the next second she's jumping his bones and then fleeing. Repeat several times over. Cole's character betterment seemed to happen...more

Jaci Burton’s covers for her Play by Play series, hands down are the best out there. I’m a sucker for a hot man titty cover and Playing to Win, book 4 in the Play by Play series has me seriously drooling. I don’t know why, but I haven’t read the first 3 books in this series. I should really go back and read them all because I really enjoyed Playing to Win. Each book has a hero involved in a professional sport and the hero of this one is Cole Riley, a recent acquisition for football team, The Tra...more

“Does the idea of a woman paying for dinner offend your masculinity?”
“Hell, yes. Deal with it.”

Playing to Win is the fourth book in the Play-by-Play series by Jaci Burton and it is right in line with all of the other titles in this series. They are dominated by alpha male athletes and strong successful business women. The first three titles were each about one of the Riley siblings (Mick, Gavin and Jenna) this new title is about their cousin Cole; a professional football player.

Talented NFL wide receiver Cole Riley’s career is in trouble. He’s been traded or axed from the previous three teams he played for and is considered a public relations hot potato due to temperamental angry outbursts resulting in alienation of his team members and management. Thanks to some arm twisting by his sports star cousins Mick and Gavin, Cole is signed by dynamo sports agent Liz Darnell who manages to negotiate Cole a contract with...more

Jaci Burton is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling, award-winning author of over 50 books. She lives in Oklahoma and when she isn’t on deadline (which is often), she can usually be found wrestling with her uncooperative garden, wrangling her dogs, watching an unhealthy amount of television, or completely losing track of time reading a great book. She’s a total romantic and longs for the hap...more

Maybe he didn’t say all the right things, and maybe he didn’t do it all in the right way, but he was hers, and she was his, and they’d figure it all out together. Because she knew now that both of them were in this for the long haul, and that he’d be there for her no matter what.
