I feel like I have been robbed. How is it that I haven't read a Sandra Brannan novel before?

This is an ARC, slated for August 7th to be available to the public. Since I have not read the previous two books, this being the third in the series, I did struggle to get my bearings initially. However, once I felt righted, the story sucked me in. Widow's Might is an excellent story for anyone who loves a great crime novel. Thank you for allowing me to read this ARC. Truly enjoyed it.

Love, love, love Sandra's books. One of these days I'm going to do the driving tour and drive past all the places in the books in chronology of the stories. Since I live here in the area, I go past many of them hit-and-miss, but think it would be fun to do it as Liv does in the stories. I still think it is possible to read this one without reading the others, but they are awesome so you should read them first! Ahhhhh. Once again, Sandra Brannan has totally taken my breath away with her writing. Widow's Might brings back the Liv that I was waiting for, a completely twisted murder that kept me reading, and a fabulous cast of characters. What I love most about this books in this series are how easy they are to get into. Read a page, and you're already hooked.

It's hard to remember that this book takes place only a few short days after the last book ends. My favorite part about Liv's character has always been how strong she is, and that doesn't change here. She's slow to anger, quick to empathy, and a downright wonderful person. As an added bonus, we meet her sister in this book. Elizabeth is like Liv multiplied by ten. I completely adored her! A woman who gives any cause a hundred percent of her time and effort, she is just as strong as her sister, and even more stubborn. The two of them are a force to be reckoned with, that's for sure!

The romance is ramped up a bit in this third book as well, although it still does a fabulous job of staying in the background. Agents Pierce and Linwood are the polar opposites of one another, but Liv finds chemistry with both of these wonderful men. It's a a breath of fresh air to have a bit of romance thrown in between all the work that goes into solving the mysteries. Let me be the first to say that no matter which of these two men Liv chooses, I'm all for it! I'll take the other one off her hands any day.

Clues are laid out in bits in pieces, always giving the reader just enough to be on the cusp of solving the murders, but never enough to quite get there. It's deliciously frustrating. What I most enjoyed about this particular book in the series (and missed in the second book) is getting a chance to see from the murderer's point of view. Having the opportunity to see into the twisted mine of "The Crooked Man" is a treat. Creepy, yet completely fascinating.

So yes, Widow's Might gets a huge five starts from me! It brought back everything that I was missing in the last book, and kept me reading well into the night. If you haven't yet started this series I highly recommend it! Liv is sure to steal your heart, as will all the other characters in this series. Full of twists and turns, Widow's Might is the stuff of late nights spent reading. I cannot wait for more!(less)

This first of this Liv Bergen mystery series, In the Belly of Jonah, entertained me despite its flaws. The second, Lot's Return to Sodom, was disappointing to me. I gave this new one a chance, hoping it would hold my interest as the first did but overcoming some of the flaws of the first work.

I like this book. I like the characters, the writing style. But I can't read the book. I can't rate the book. And there is a very simple reason.

Widow's Might is the third book in the Liv Bergren series. And I haven't read books 1 and 2. Normally, that doesn't pose much of a problem. Authors are aware that readers don't necessarily start with the first book and slowly reintroduce characters and if the plots of the previous novels are important enough, they briefly explain them as needed. But this...more I like this book. I like the characters, the writing style. But I can't read the book. I can't rate the book. And there is a very simple reason.

Widow's Might is the third book in the Liv Bergren series. And I haven't read books 1 and 2. Normally, that doesn't pose much of a problem. Authors are aware that readers don't necessarily start with the first book and slowly reintroduce characters and if the plots of the previous novels are important enough, they briefly explain them as needed. But this isn't like most series. Most series (especially mystery) have central character who finds herself (or himself) immersed in a mystery for whatever reason and at the end of the novels, solves the crime, catches the bad guy, gets the guy (or the girl), etc. etc. The next book then revolves around a completely different crime.

Not this series. Not only does it have the same characters but it is basically the next episode of the same large overall mystery. As the synopsis point out, this novel "picks up right where the second one left off". And this, in essence, was my concern. The book just began with action, action, action. I hadn't connected with the characters, I couldn't understand what was going on, I couldn't follow the story; basically, my lack of knowledge about the previous books kept me from fully enjoying this book. Therefore, I did not finish the book (I read about a 100 pages, then put it down).

That's not in any way Brannan's fault. I think she's unique and bold for using such a way to write the series. If I had copies of books 1 and 2, it is quite likely I would have enjoyed this whole series immensely. The actual characters are witty and likable, and the plot is both fast-paced and thorough. With that said, don't read this unless you have the previous books in this series on hand. This is the kind of series that you have to read all at once.

So readers, I end with a "Caveat emptor". Some have gotten along fine without previous books, some (like me) have not. Can you?(less)

I thought this book was a good "Beach Read". It really should be a 2.5 Star rating, but as that's not possible, I ranked it 2 stars rather than 3 for it's soap opera traits. Widow's Might is a quick read - ideal escapism for those who like a nice, predictable and fairly tepid thriller and an even more tepid romance. While it wasn't my cup of tea, I'm sure my sister would enjoy it more than I did. I found the main character Liv to be more annoying than likeable with her many, many, many, so, sooo many sophmoric girly/gooey musings, fantasies & daydreams to be credible as either a miner/quarry professional or as a potential FBI trainee. Thankfully, the other characters in Widow's Might were not nearly as "well-developed" as Liv and therefore not as annoying.

The soap opera parts of the book are basically found in the dialogue between characters. As the reader is only privy to the thoughts of Liv and the killer, dialogue between characters is necessary to keep the story moving along, but I found it to be generally too stilted and/or abbreviated to explain the supposed intimacy between the characters.

South Dakota history was woven into the story and raised the "interest" factor for me considerably. Without that history, the plot would have been non-existent. But the "preservation v. development" debate, while logical within the story, was a) a spoiler and b) felt like an OBVIOUS plot-device in the superficial treatment it was given by the author.

Overall, I found Widow's Might to be good bed-time reading as it wasn't suspenseful enough to keep me turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning, yet interesting enough to pick up again the next night for another 50 pages or 30 minutes....until I finished.(less)

Elderly people are dying or being murdered...the lovely red haired Liv is sort of in the midst of all this along with a temptingly attractive agent...Streeter.

I stumbled through the first chapter or two because I didn't realize this was the third in a series but once I got my reading bearings it was sort of easy to keep everything straight.

I haven't read the first two Liv Bergen books, but that doesn't seem to matter all that much in terms of getting into the series. As far as I can tell, the action in the first two takes place a mere month - or less - before this book, with the immediate predecessor covering a mere few days earlier. That did make it a little difficult getting started, as you have to figure out what exactly is happening and who is who (cold starts that assume you've read the previous book aren't my favorite; this...more I haven't read the first two Liv Bergen books, but that doesn't seem to matter all that much in terms of getting into the series. That did make it a little difficult getting started, as you have to figure out what exactly is happening and who is who (cold starts that assume you've read the previous book aren't my favorite; this one is better than most).

This smallish town in the Black Hills of South Dakota is really overrun with killers, it seems. Here we meet the Crooked Man, a serial killer with a ten-year history of one murder per year. Liv's sister, Elizabeth, interrupts his latest attempt, and Liv's involvement with the FBI over the past couple of cases (and Agent Pierce's desire that she join them, issuing an invitation to interview for a position and undergo training at Quantico) means that she's in the thick of this one. The FBI team includes Bly (who is mostly working the Sturgis Rally), Linwood (laconic and good-looking) and Jenna Tate (gorgeous, flirtatious and intimidating), all interacting with Liv as though she's already a junior member of the team. Her knowledge of the people, places and history of the Black Hills is helpful to their investigation, as is her connection with Beulah, the mantrailing dog she will soon (they hope) be working with full-time for the FBI.

Without giving away too many spoilers, the Crooked Man killer is involved, somehow, with Nature's Way, an environmental group that wants to prevent development of the old homesteads, preserving the land for animals and the future. There's a wonderful scene at a hearing on limiting easements, rather than leaving them as a perpetual fact - the differing sides of the argument are treated fairly. There's also a close tie to Custer, he of the Last Stand and the lesser known 1847 Expedition in the Black Hills.

The milieu and the characters are interesting, as is the Crooked Man. What made this a 3 was that the FBI team did crack the code behind the killings and their motivation, yet there's still a very long scene between him and Liv with her trying to stave off his attack on her by asking "why" and him going into several pages of justification and gloating. Sigh. It was repetitive, given the FBI's work, and I always hate that scene. I found it also difficult to believe Liv's insecurity and hesitance, particularly given her assistance with the previous cases.

Widow's Might is the 3rd book in the series and I had no problem picking up the story line (for those who like to read in order). But I really like these characters, and the author’s voice as channeled through main protagonist Live Bergen is as charming as is her real-life voice as Sandra Brannan.

Liv is an attractive 29-year old miner working in Livermore, Colorado who doesn’t go out much, and says she has never apologized for “keeping my nose to the limestone.” Yet somehow [presumably elucidated in earlier books in the series], she had become involved with a murder case in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and got to know the FBI agents on the scene investigating it. And now, it so happens she gets mixed up with yet another murder case, only a short time after the last. This murder looks like one committed by a bizarre and methodical serial killer known as “The Crooked Man.” FBI Special Agent Streeter Pierce (secretly called Agent Adonis by Liv) has been frustrated by these cases for thirteen years now, but with Liv’s knowledge of the area and the assistance of two other agents (also-gorgeous Jack Linwood and also-gorgeous Jenna Tate), there are finally some breakthroughs. It also helps immensely that the latest intended victim of The Crooked Man, a feisty widow named Helma Hanson, managed to survive. As the protagonists work towards solving the crime, we also learn a lot about General George Armstrong Custer’s 1874 expedition into the Black Hills, and about the disputes between conservationists and ranchers over the preservation of natural resources and historic sites in South Dakota.

Evaluation: Other than the fact that everyone in this book is either “a looker” or “drop-dead gorgeous” I was delighted with this book. (And what the heck – maybe the Black Hills has more appeal than I knew!) Well, there was also the problem that what occurred in earlier books seems to be pretty important, but isn't made all that clear to readers just jumping in at book three. Thus, I would recommend starting with the two earlier books in the series, In The Belly of Jonah, and Lot’s Return to Sodom. (Yes, all the titles are biblical references, and yes, one could even define this book, and perhaps the others, as Christian fiction.) But don’t let all these caveats deter you! This is a very likable book, with great characters. The author’s self-deprecating humor and talent as a raconteur are just as charming as can be. (And now, I’m off to order the two previous books….)

I loved the fast moving plot. The short chapters always kept me on the edge of my seat. The author clearly did a lot of research and brought in just enough information about the area and the history to make it completely believable. Can't wait until book 4 is out!!

I got this book through Goodreads First Reads and it was the third in the series so I did go back to read the first 2 books and then begin this one. I really loved all three books
I am very surprised that I had not heard of them and I did have some trouble locating the first 2 books I checked 18 libraries and came up empty at every one I finally just purchased the ebooks and I am very glad I did. I love Liv and I can't wait to read about her future adventures!!

Liv's knowledge of the history and geography of South Dakota is making her more and more valuable to the FBI team working there.
