In this delightful picture book, loosely inspired by Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, a scat-singing, bebopping jackrabbit travels across the United States and marvels at all the wonders that the country reveals—from hopping on the subway in New York City to playing a jukebox in Chicago, and from gazing at Mount Rushmore to crossing the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. In middle school it was Stephen King, college it was Joan Didion, but high school…Jack Kerouac ruled my heart! All the Beats actually, but Jack Kerouac’s work and words captured a feeling that I can still feel bouncing around my heart and soul. Sooooo….when I saw this book across the kids’ room of my local library, hehe….I may have trampled a kid or two trying to get to it first! ;)

Hit the Road, Jack by Robert Burleigh and illustrated by Ross MacDonald is a gorgeous book. Warm, soft, glowing col...more

Oh what fun! A be-bopping jack rabbit tracing Kerouac's journey from ON THE ROAD. I love this Jack with his blue jeans rolled up, and his loafers and his leather jacket. Reminds me of my Uncle Rex who had the same wanderlust...The illustrations are superb. They give us a real flavor of the country over 50 years ago when it was safe to hitchhike across the country, sleeping in barns, taking in the local sights.

As much fun are the exuberant words...you can hear the jazz, you can hear Kerouac. "Hey...more

In some respects a mash-up of the hit song "Hit the Road, Jack," the long-leggedness of a Jack rabbit, and the life of writer Jack Kerouac, whose itchy feet kept him traveling about the countryside in search of adventure and insight into others, this title written in rhyming verses has catchy language and softly-hued watercolor and pencil crayon illustrations that make it fun to read. I would never have thought of someone creating a picture book with Kerouac of all people as its focus. I doubt t...more

I've been a fan of Ross MacDonald's picture books since "Another Perfect Day." His retro style, done in watercolor and pencil crayon, is filled with a warm yellow glow, that looks like sunshine hitting the paper. "Hit the Road, Jack" celebrates life on the open road and the joys of traveling cross country and was loosely inspired by Jack Kerouac's "On the Road." Author Robert Burleigh gives us a jackrabbit named Jack who is itching to travel and to see America. Setting out in New York he walks,...more

Very interesting book inspired by Jack Kerouac's adult book, On the Road. The text has a rollicking feel to it with rhyming and such interesting word choice. Add the geography covered in the book and you have many possibilities for using this in the classroom. The illustrations add to the fun of the book, done in watercolor and pencil crayon. A jackrabbit main character takes us throughout the U.S. by way of train, truck, auto, and walking!

I think this book is really fun!
It follows the tale of Jack the Jackrabbit,
who is inspired by Jack Kerouac,
and takes us all over the US.

The illustrations are AWESOME!
This is a perfect book for dreaming up road trips,
or prepping to go on one!

It is also great to just show kids other parts of America and get them excited about all the different places we have within our own country!

I gave this book 4/5 stars. I did not especially enjoy this book. I thought the illustrations were dull. The story itself was ok but was not a detailed story. I felt like I was reading an abridged report about a trip someone took. This was not one of my favorite books but I am just one reader so feel free to read it anyway!

Age: 1st-4th grade
Travel: America

Better suited for older ages because there's no real demanding plot, other than traveling across the country. In regards to that, this would be an excellent classroom addition for units on travel and geography in the USA. Fun, bopping rhymes but the plot starts to get a little monotonous.

Opening this book, I was surprised that it was not based on the song at all. Instead, this is a tribute to Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Jack in this picture book is a jackrabbit who longs to travel America. So he leaves New York and rides his bicycle to Boston and then Buffalo. Pennsylvania and Cleveland are next with Detroit too. Jack spends some time in Chicago before heading back into the countryside and hopping a train. A car carries him to the Great Plains and Mount Rushmore. He sees the Roc...more

Loosely inspired by Jack Kerouac's On the Road and the Ray Charles song, Jack the jackrabbit bebops his way across the United States. A charming, delightfully illustrated tribute to the beauty of the country and the restless, travel-loving spirit of Kerouac.

I had such high hopes for this one because it looked super cute. I was disappointed and neither of the boys really liked it. It seemed super long and the choice of words didn't flow very well for me. The illustrations are awesome.

I assumed this was going to be a picture book take on the song, but I was pleased to discover it was a homage to "ON THE ROAD" instead. Simple with lovely art to match, this is a favorite book of 2012.

Loved the fresh take on vintage illustrations drenched in sunshine, depicting the best parts of America. A fun representation of Jack Kerouac that kids will appreciate.

I like the old-fashioned flair depicted by the illustrations and font, but I wonder who the audience is for a picture book based on Kerouac's On the Road.

A rabbit's cross country journey loosely based on the travels of Jack Kerouac -- really? For the picture book crowd? Every hipster mommy and daddy will want it, but the ramble probably won't appeal to kids. It's a poetic travelogue not a story, though the pictures are warm and retro.

This will make a great readaloud for upper elementary and middle that may inspire research on mentioned cities... Poetic, dramatic and geographic!

I loved it! The poem was fun to read and the illustrations take you back to the 1950s-60s with their beautiful painted feeling.

I have to write a book review for this and while I think it's a beautifully illustrated book I'm a little on the fence.

A rabbit named Jack travels across the United States in a story based on the life of author Jack Kerouac.
Linda Atkinson
This one I might have to own just for the illustrations. One for the adults as well as the kids;-)

I'm not totally sure what rubbed me the wrong way, but I just didn't like this book.

A book about Jack Kerouac for the preschool set? What an awesome idea.
Cory
Excuse me, I have to go travel America and reread On the Road.
Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy)
Still trying to figure out who the audience is for this book.
Karen
Amazing illustrations , sepia tone, well chosen words. A keper!
Dean
Really pretty pictures

This is a fun poetry book that would be great for working with a theme of America geography. I do have to confess that human bodies with Jack Rabbit heads is a good bit odd, but overall the illustrations are attractive and fun.
