4.5 stars - After a nasty breakup with her boyfriend, high powered lawyer Lys picks the scariest guy she knows to help her retrieve her stuff, the dangerously sexy security expert Kubush Telos who Lys is pretty sure lives on the gray side of the law. Kubush is not much into good deeds but he's been attracted to Lys and sure that smoldering sensuality lurks behind her icy facade, and seeing the fractures in rigid self control he decides to help her, only to discover that the he's unknowingly walk...more
Pretty cool and fresh look into the world of Demons. I was actually rather impressed. I think that the character of Telos was a bit more fleshed out than that of Lys. By the end of the book, I understood she had a lot of power, but I didn't have a clear idea of what she could really do with it. The reader found out some interesting things about Demon sex in this this novella. I know that Telos has some mad computer skills; but I would have like to have known what kind of Demon powers Telos has a...more
Jewel has created a fascinating world in Free Fall, and I loved the way that world slowly revealed itself. Even with having read the premise first, I spent half of the first chapter trying to figure out what the heck was going on -- in a good way. I always appreciate a complicated hero, and Telos definitely fits that bill. Dark, mysterious, and sexy-as-hell, he draws you in right along with the heroine, Lys, a witch with little control over her abilities who is both strong and vulnerable, brave...more

Initially confusing, but eventually the rules become clear. Now, I feel like re-reading the Immortal series!
This novella is set in a contemporary world of demons, witches, and mages. Mages provide the largest threat and seem to hold the greatest capacity for evil. (They routinely sacrifice demons for increased power. Mages also enslave demons, making them 'mageheld', which causes demons to lose free will.

Back in May, author Carolyn Jewel offered review copies of her novella, Free Fall, to interested bloggers. The premise seemed intriguing, so I was excited when I received a copy. Though there were some fuzzy plot details, the novella’s world-building is interesting and complex and the main characters have great chemistry.
This is a fast paced, well-written story. Jewel starts it off with a high level of tension and keeps the emotions up throughout. Free Fall opens with the main character, Lys Fen...more

I received a copy of this novella free from the author.
My fault for not realizing in advance that Free Fall is set already within the series . . . my enjoyment of the book was dampened by not understanding the background. I felt like I only began to understand the plot about three-quarters of the way through; because of this, I don't recommend this for newcomers to the series.

WOW, since I love the series, I am biased, but there is so much texture to this short story, it blows me away. The characters are fleshed out and the imagery is vivid. Shorter stories have a tendency to lack dimension because they are just filler or set up for, or within a series, but even though this is considered a short story by some standards, it isn't short on anything else, but I have come to expect nothing less from her.

Here is a novella well set in the middle of an going series that is absolutely appealing and easy even for novices like me.
The dark edges of the story are what I loved and the glimpses in the my immortals series are interesting enough to make me want the rest of the books. The novella is a UF for me, I hope the books will be too.

This is a quick read. While the story is in the My Immortals world, neither character is one that we have met before. I did like the story. Lys and Telos are interesting characters. Lys has a powerful and deadly power and is becoming out of control. She asks Telos for help, and Telos jumps into help her. The story is action packed. I liked the scene that were added to this story, it made it feel like a more complete story.

I didn't read this one, but I did read Future Tense. Free Fall is the expanded version of Future Tense. I enjoyed Future Tense as a short story.
Really enjoyed this one! Full review to follow, but for now, 4.5/5 Stars :)
Short, hot and with a strange/new-to-me paranormal world. I'll probably get around to reading other books in the series someday.

Carolyn Jewel was born on a moonless night. That darkness was seared into her soul and she became an award winning author of historical and paranormal romance. She has a very dusty car and a Master’s degree in English that proves useful at the oddest times. An avid fan of fine chocolate, finer heroines, Bollywood films, and heroism in all forms, she has three cats and a dog. Also a son. One of the...more
