Can't believe that this gem of a book is out of print. Just around 100 pages thick, but it has nuggets of information on sensory deprivation studies. The author provides insights into how sensory deprivation may affect cognitive skills and mental health of a person. The subjects are asked to go inside the "black room" for varying periods of time and their cognitive skills are tested before and after the experiment. Time has rendered this worth a look both in terms of content and stylistics. In parts, it feels very outdated – none more so than an almost embarrassing section of Freudian dream analysis – but that's part of the appeal. But the results aren't quite surprising enough to push this towards Popular Science, whilst it lacks the rigour to pass as a scientific publication.
