This was featured recently in the local newspaper, in an article about good gift books for children. Since I enjoy ballet, I picked it up. It's a gorgeously photographed study of Fiona, a young teen selected to play the role of Clara in the Boston Ballet's production of The Nutcracker. The text, told in the first person "by" Fiona, touches on her love of dance, the difficulties and challenges of being so focused at such a young age, and her hopes for the future. However... Ever wanted to be a ballerina? This book is a beautiful and inspiring portrait of a real life girl pursuing her dream to becoming a ballerina and scoring the lead role in The Nutcracker. Complete with dozens of full color photographs that bring to life the hard work and artistry that go into creating the magical world of the ballet.

A nice glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of one girl's journey playing Clara in The Nutcracker. This book would be great for aspiring ballet dancers or to share with kids about to go see the show. It would have been strengthened by some back matter (a glossary of ballet terms, a list of books for further reading).
This reminds me of my childhood favorite, A VERY YOUNG DANCER. It's much longer, but it follows a girl through the process of taking classes, auditions, and preparing for the role of Clara in The Nutcracker ballet.
Not quite a read-aloud, but definitely a story of the work it takes to become a pre-professional child ballet dancer. So much practice!
This was really cute but I wanted to know more about how much Friedman wrote and how much was from interviews.

Much longer but informative about one girl's journey as a ballerina
Beautiful book. I wish there were pictures of the Sugar Plum Fairy, though.
