I listened to the audio of this book, and I was getting frustrated because there were so many milligrams, micrograms, and international units of this or that mineral or vitamin or acids that I should take on a daily or weekly basis, that I should be noting down - but being on the move listening on to go to the audiobook, I couldn't very well easily do so. So I felt the nuggets of golden secrets to lasting health slipping away from my grasp one after the other as I heard them come one after the ...more

For the most part, I thought this book was excellent. How each part of the body works was broken down in easy to understand terms. Most of the book was very funny too. There was also a lot of good information, a lot of which I did not know. I've been going around to everyone I know and telling them some of the things I have learned from this book, although a lot of the book was common sense.

I guess the only downer was the 1,600 calorie food plan at the end (most guys aren't going to be...more

Bought this book a couple of years ago at Ogylvy station's book store at a 30% discount. nice deal..heheh..Can't remember the name of the store now...
Anyhow..
I have two books sitting beside my bed. The Bible and this. If the Bible is my life manual, this book is my eat-right-work-right-play-right-sleep-right manual. Everything I need to know on how my body works is in it. The nice thing is the way the doctor-authors put all the heavy medical terms in such a way that's easy on the brain (well...more

I just read this book and didn't care much for it. It's the same old thing -- eat veggies, exercise, don't smoke. You'll see this any other health book. I came away with very little, if any, new information. I did not appreciate the constant references to evolution -- that "evolution somehow knew..." or "evolution gave us the gift of..." for example. Evolution is not a being or creator. It is a theory, Even Charles Darwin admitted that much. It has no brain or thought. While ...more

I wish I would have learned biology or health with this book in high school. It makes the body so easy to understand. It reads as more of a reference book and I'll keep it around as such. For example, I had a sore throat recently and I remembered trying a salt water gargle in the past with little success. I looked it up in the book and I realized the only quick fix to feel better was a salt water gargle with warm water a certain number of times a day. It worked!
It's also made me stick wit...more

You: The Owners Manual was another one of those non-fiction books that I felt I should read, just to get a sense of what all the fuss was about. Turned out pretty interesting; I certainly learned a few things about the workings of our bodies. Seems pretty sane and well thought out; the one thing that kind of irked me was the silly, cartoony illustrations that seemed to offer as much humorous misinformation as actual help. Oh well. the author, Michael Roizen, followed this up with You: On a Diet....more

My health care employed husband is so tired of my health and medical related questions that he had to get me this book.

This was an intersting and entertaining read on what goes on in your body. It reminded me of my Human Biology text from eons ago, but with enough humor and wit to keep me reading through.

This is one of the better health/fitness books I have read and I will read anything Dr. Oz is involved in in the future. Thanks to him, I am really looking at how many fruits and vege...more

System by system this book explains the functions and care of each vital part of your body. Drs Roizen and Oz are at times light and silly but seriously committed to helping us to keep our bodys at their prime. I loved it when they said "most people care for their cars better than their bodies." Their advice is easy to follow, nothing spectacular, just small changes you can make every day, like choosing whole grains instead of white flour, and walking 30 min each day. Everyone wan...more

Excellent book!! In fact, I think everybody should have to read this book. It really does give a lot of insight into how one should be taking care of the body! I'm an anatomy & physiology guru, but anybody could pick this book up and UNDERSTAND all the concepts that are discussed in the book. The authors are quite comical throughout the book, and the material presented is easily understood. I originally read this book back in Jan 2007, but I just re-read the book over the past week. this book is long, but packed full of good information. If you've taken anatomy or nutrition classes before, than alot of the information will not be new to you. However, the way the information is relayed is great. it's really relatable and understandable. i wish the textbooks in school relayed the info this way, it wouldn't have been so hard to read through them.

this book pputsinto perspective how your body works and how the things you do effect it.

Got this book as a gift (someone trying to tell me something?) and thought it would be mostly useless. I found that, suprisingly, it is a good, quick read(probably because it is at the standard journalistic sixth grade reading level), reminding the reader of simple body functions you learn about in health class and quickly forget. Explains how our bodies function, simple tips for making it function better, and somehow convinces you that you should.

I have been reading this book on and off for a while. It has basic information about the human body and tries to dumb it down a bit for those of us who did not go to med school. So far I really like it. It is written by the two doctors who are always on the Oprah show, and they do a pretty good job. I like it so far. They do a pretty good job of explaining to the average American in general terms how the human body works.

First of all, this book is an abridgement. I absolutely abhor abridgements, but in this case it works because I really only wanted the info the book provides.

Which brings me to the book itself. I either know and/or practice everything the book has to tell me. Oz and Roizen managed to package common knowledge into a saleable unit, using their status and notoriety as marketing tools. Good job.

In a word, ca-ching...

I absolutely love this book! It's a wealth of information written in a really simple manner, so that that non-doctor people like me can understand physiology and how our choices impact our bodies and our lives. I can't say enough about this book. After reading it, I couldn't help but eat healthier, and my cholesterol actually went down over the last year. This is a great book to buy me for Christmas. Wink wink.

this book is broken down into chapters related to areas of your body (cardiovascular health, bone, joints and muscle health, respitory health, etc.) to help you understand how those systems work and what activities keep them healthy. it is not another trendy book about how to change your diet or exercise to lose weight or have more energy, but really focuses on what is healthy from a medical perspective.

Easy to read, but tries too hard to be cute & funny, resulting in distracting. Will glean from it useful info and return to library. No need to own this book as a reference manual.

9/21 Did find some useful info in here and double checked some of it with my general practitioner. The authors operate the RealAge website which I enjoy on occasion.

I thought this book was a really good guide for everyone to read on how your body functions and what you need for it in regards to health, nutrition, etc. It's putting YOU in the driver's seat and not a doctor (although, the advice comes from doctors). I just like it because YOU should know yourself and your health better than anyone else.

Written by two MDs, this book gives the average person, who knows very little anatomy, an inside look at how each part of the body works, without all the medical jargon. The authors are hilarious and the little illustrations amusing. It also contains suggestions of how to maintain your body. Not a quick read, but definitely enjoyable.

The bottom line is that we all need to be self-experts on our individual health among other things. I like the tone of this book--serious information sprinkled with humor, albeit corny at times. However, the information everyone needs to know is here along with interesting factoids, menu samples and recipes. I strongly recommend.

This is the first health book I have read. Usually not into that kind of thing, but read a review that made it sound appealing. Sometimes corny but presents health information in a way that strikes me. Book promotes the activities that will keep the internal systems of the human body running for the longest amount of time.
