I am not normally an autobiography reader so I do tend to pick and choose whose I read. As a minor Sci-Fi geek it was through the Babylon 5 series & films that I discovered Claudia Christian. So when I saw this autobiography I thought why not, could be an interesting read.

About the Author

Claudia Christian is an actress, writer, singer, songwriter, director, producer, and voice-over artist. She landed her first TV series at age 18 with NBC’s Berringers and her first studio feature at 20 in the cult hit The Hidden. Christian went on to star in studio pictures such as Clean and Sober with Morgan Freeman and Michael Keaton and in TV shows such as sci-fi megahit Babylon 5. I don't usually read Hollywood tell-all books. Who did what, and with whom, doesn't generally intrigue me. But, I am a huge Babylon 5 and Claudia Christian fan. And I have always wondered what happened to her, after the show.

Little did I know just how incredible her story would be.

For anybody that has had addiction problems and just life problems in general this is a great book to read. There are a lot of things Claudia writes about in this book that I could relate to as not only somebody that has had addiction problems, but also from the standpoint of being a friend with these kinds of problems. I'd been looking forward to reading this book for months. Claudia is one of the actresses I most admire. This book is a very intimate look at her life. She talks about her family, her career, her loves and most importantly her battle with alcoholism.

Claudia has been talking about the Sinclair Method for quite a while now but it wasn't until reading this book that I understood what that meant.

The need to keep drinking once you start is something that plagues alcoholics and something which over the years I've felt from time to time. The constant battle between periods of extended abstinence and then bouts of drinking binges that she talks about is something that I've seen time and time again in people with alcoholism. Often their friends ask how they can go back to drinking. The method in the book is a chemical, a pill that you take before you drink. Unlike other alcohol "cures" this treats the physical addiction; it works on reducing the cravings. It has an 80 percent success rate. It was fascinating to read Claudia's first-hand account of how after taking the pill before drinking the need to keep drinking after that first glass disappeared. It sounds like one of those things that is too good to be true. But considering how much money is made from the recovery industry I think it is probably not in their best interest to promote this method.

To me the latter half of the book talking about addiction and recovery really hit home. But I don't want to give the impression that the book is all about serious issues. Claudia is a very funny woman and this comes across in book. There are many funny stories of her experiences working on different shows (and some stories about the misogynistic tendencies of famous actors you will really shocked by)! as well as some very funny stories about experiences with fans.

Claudia is a woman who has experienced loss and suffering but also the life of the rich and famous. Throughout it all she has remained strong and independent. I'm not normally one to enjoy "celebrity autobiographies" but this book is so much more than that. I would very highly recommend this book to all her fans and to anyone, whether a fan or not, who has had their own battles with alcoholism or has a loved one who has.

That's this book in a nutshell. Well, the first half of it anyway. The second half of it aims to be a poor woman's Bukowski as we watch CC lurch from drunken bottom to drunken bottom. This is always my least favourite part of an addict memoir--that woe-was-me recounting of all the ways in which they did horrible things at the behest of their illness. I've been at parties where groups of AA veterans gather in one room away from the keg and try to outdo each other with tales of misery and imagination. It's irritating to me, like it's a competition as to who stole the most money from the most trusting relative, who embarrassed themselves the most and was the cruellest to those who loved them. "Then there was the time I threw up on my little girl in her princess costume after I drank three bottles of vanilla extract that we were going to use to make her birthday cupcakes."

Ugh.

There's a happy ending of sorts, as Christian ambassadors for the Cure For Alcoholism that she endorses. The Sinclair Method involves not abstaining from drink, as you would suspect, but rather retraining your brain's chemistry to drink in moderation by reprogramming the opiod pathways of the brain. It sounds plausible, workable, and inexpensive. (Indeed, the Sinclair Method physicians claim that it hasn't caught on yet because it's such a cheap cure that it will bankrupt the billion-dollar rehab industry.) The science geek in me will continue to follow studies on the Sinclair Method with great interest. There are too many addicts in my life for me to not perk up at the thought of a workable physical cure for addictions.

Speaking of science geekery--if, like me, you picked this up because you're a die-hard B5 fan and wanted to reminisce about the show's glory days and read detailed information about its creation...you're screwed. There's less time spent on B5 than there is on Dodi Fayed's stupid boat. The only real "dish" is that Michael O'Hare was a class-A jerk. That's something that any fan knew, given his early departure from the show, so that was about as much news as finding out that the show was set in space. All in all there's about 2/3rds of a chapter devoted to working on Babylon 5, and most of that is spent on talking about her affair with the director of Photography and how good he made her look onscreen. Seriously.

Frankly, I blame the ghostwriter for much of the problem with this book. Unlike really great celebrity memoirs, there's no real sense of time or place or era in this story. It's pretty much just a list of the many men bedded by Christian and the many times life broke her heart. It's a shame because there's actually the meat of a great bonkbuster novel here. In the hands of a better writer this book could have been unputdownable along the lines of a Jackie Collins or Olivia Goldsmith. Instead it's the most prosaic accounting possible.

I do actually respect CC for not gossiping rudely about co-stars. That respect is watered down by the fact that any role she had, including walk-on parts in 80s TV movies is said to be a project she "starred" in. If she acted as Girl #3 in a film with, say, Tyrone Power (yeah, I couldn't think of a real life example) she says "I starred with Tyrone Power in The Man Who Was Everything." So that was another irritation.

Overall I'd say that I recommend the last few chapters of this book to anyone who has struggled with addiction--their own or that of a loved one. Those chapters are 4 stars, as they go into great detail about the Sinclair Method. (Named for a Dr. Sinclair, not Michael O'Hare's character on B5.) The rest of the book is a solid 1.5 star affair. So I'm giving it a 2-star average.(less)

Meh... I love the memoir where someone beats the odds.

Although I have not ever seen Babylon 5, and I'm not a sci-fi fan, this was an interesting look into the lives of Hollywooders. Why would anyone even want that kind of self-esteem corroding, eroding, defeating life? It's no wonder so many actors end up addicted or wacky (like Charlie Sheen).

That's my review of the book, but of course it invites a review of the author too...

Autobiographies are strange things because they provide an illusion of objectivity when in fact they are completely subjective. We read them to find out what a celebrity is 'really' like and to judge them, but we can only get the story they wish to portray. If we trust they are honest then we at least get their life story as they see it, which still doesn't tell us the truth, but does tell us something about them. The most telling aspect for me is what stories they choose to include. Usually they pick stories that make them look good (or vulnerable, or whatever they wish to portray) but what they think looks good may not be what we think looks good, so they unwittingly reveal a lot about their own psychology.

I'm not entirely sure that Christian realises just how fucked up her life (as she portrays it) really was. Obviously she is what she is, and we can't expect her to constantly apologise for it. Presumably she has some idea that being raped as a teenager lead her to a debauched life of sexual hedonism which after 20 years caught up with her and caused her to become an alcoholic. It's not spelt out but that is now she has structured the narrative after all. Yet I don't really get any sense of regret over those middle years.

I thought it was a really good book. It is just short of amazing what trials Ms. Christian has made it through. The writing was good the book flowed well for an autobiography. Pretty entertaining read. It's very honest and human. There's the usual bit of hollywood, "I met this person and partied with that person.", but my guess is that's kinda par for the course living out there. Of course the sci-fi fanboy in me enjoyed learning a few new tidbits of info, but that was secondary to just plain enjoying it on it's own merits. Claudia opens up her life in this book. To fans that have only seen her at her best (working her butt off) it's shocking to know how troubled her down time was.

Knowing her better can only make us like her work even better.

It was a good read about her journey from success to the depths of addiction and the surprisingly simple cure that she finally found.

I was able to cry for her sorrows and rejoice in her successes.

A good read about a terrific actress.

I'm not normally a fan of "celebrity" memoirs to put it mildly. In my view most are famous for just being famous and not for any obvious talent. Ms Christian is an exception - a talented actor with a touch of self-deprecating wit. The book may be a road map through a life of addiction but it also highlights Hollywood at its misogynistic worst.

A light read but not a comfortable one.

It's also very relatable, as Claudia shares the story of her life and the challenges that she, like so many of us, has had to face. Lt. Ivanova has always been my favorite character within the Babylon 5 universe. Reading Claudia Christians biography sheds a completely different light on this great actress.
