Bishop's franchise uses a boilerplate technique that works well for an informational series. It's hard to argue with large full-color close-up photos of animals in action. Bishop's photos are extremely powerful manipulations of light and color, and the design of the text and facing pages is done to complement the photo work. Kudos to designer Nancy Sabato, who paid close attention to doing something on every spread to make it all work. Many other designers who pay this close attention would clut...more
Nic Bishop Snakes by Nic Bishop is a close-up photographic look and engaging overview of the wide variety of snakes.
Bishop's stunning photographs show unique close-up views of snakes. A double-gatefold of a Mojave rattlesnake is a highlight. Snakes shown include African horned Bush Viper, Rainbow boa, green tree python, flowerpot snake, Mandarin rat snake, feathered bush viper, yellow anacondas, parrot snake, king snake, garter snakes, Asian sand viper, emerald tree boa, carpet python, eyelash...more

Snakes is a tremendously interesting book about the life and physiology of snakes. Bishop covers many fundamental concepts including habitat, movement, physiology (organs and bone structure), sight, smell, defense against predators, and diet (including two pictures of snakes mid-meal). Includes index, glossary, and further reading sections.

Filled with amazing photographs that show various snakes close enough for readers to see their scales and text that grabs and holds onto readers like a boa constrictor might snatch its prey, this book is another wonderful addition for the classroom science library. The author demystifies these reptiles, decribing what would happen to a human's organs if he/she could turn into a snake. By describing its scales as functioning "like the tread on your shoes" (unpaged), the author insures that reader...more
I'd much prefer snakes to be in belt or shoe form. Bishop blew me away with Snakes and not just with his exceptional photography. The text in this book is friendly and informative. Each main selection gives you some general background about the snake species. Each segment is beautifully integrated with the imagery of his spreads, text formatting that is just as beautiful as the photographs. It makes you want to read it as opposed to just flipping to the next aww (or eww) inspiring picture. Small...more
Not many would dare to title their book not just an enormous broad subject name (Snakes) but would actually be bold enough to include their own name to describe the subject of the book (Nic Bishop Snakes). And to do so with our blessing, because he has done it before (Nic Bishop Spiders, Nic Bishop Frogs, Nic Bishop Lizards) and we have loved it.

A fascinating look at snakes with information mirroring full page full color photos of snakes eating, blending in etc. Information is written at a high interest level that invites further research, but ultimately makes for a good nonfiction pleasure read as opposed to a title that would be useful for homework. At the end of the book, the author includes a two page spread that discusses his adventures photographing the snakes featured in the book.

Reading Level: Grades 1 and up. Not recommended for gerbilsssss or thosssssse ssssenssssitive to sssssslithererssssss.
Nic Bishop, one of the most terrifying authors in children's literature today, has done it again with his new book, Snakes. Prepare for sleepless, terrified nights after these horrific photographs of larger-than-life serpents (really, Nic? Did they have to be larger? Actual size is horrifying enough!). We gerbils hear a lot of kids talk about how scary R.L. Stine's books are (th...more

I guess you have to give a "5" rating to a book that still sends shivers crawling down your back hours later, just thinking about it. WOW! Nic Bishop does it again with his AMAZING photography and fascinating information. Okay... the cover totally creeps me out (could that snake spring out and bite me???), but it's that kind of vibrant photography that makes the book great. Very interesting back matter as Bishop explain his process in getting the photographs!!!
I take my kids to the library every week or two, and let them pick out their own books. This was the choice of my 6 year old. WIN!
The photography is absolute amazing! I seriously wonder how long it took him to get these shots, the hours of waiting patiently for just the right shot.
The text is also perfect. This book appeals to both parents AND kids. This is rarely found common ground. Great find! I will definitely be checking out his other books.

Stunning photographs, and a great ability to synthesize and write clear informational text for children without sounding stiff or dry. Great author's note, which in explaining the process he went through to get the photos, gives us a different perspective on snakes--not the factual data, but what makes them so fascinating to him as a subject. I appreciate Bishop making special note of the one instance he used digital compositing to achieve a shot. Index, glossary, further reading.
If you love snakes then you will love Snakes by Nic Bishop. This book has lots of information on several types of snakes. The color photographs are pictures of actual snakes but be advice some of the pictures are graphic, showing how snakes eat. I would not recommend this book to young children, nevertheless a good book to use to collect and gather data and information on and about snakes.
This is an astonishing book. Like other Nic Bishop books, the photography of this book is spectacular. Some of the pictures are life sized, while others are magnified (the magnified ones are labeled as such). The only problem with the magnified pictures is that it leaves some of the life sized ones looking a little scrawny.

This book is a non-fiction text about all types of snakes, venomous and constrictors. The book is filled with actual photos that are colorful and sometimes frightening. The book does a great job of describes all the different types of snakes, and is fairly easy to read. This is great for students who enjoy learning about reptiles.

Oooh - kids will LOVE this book about snakes. The photographs are amazing. I liked the end notes by Bishop explaining how he got the pictures. The facts are interesting, and the snakes are beautiful and fascinating. I'm also going to use it to point out figurative language in nonfiction.
I was so excited to see this book at our recent book fair, I mean Nic Bishop is one talented guy, even if I'm creeped out looking at his newest book. P.K.
