I've heard of gut biomes often--mostly in the context of their effect on obesity--but this story takes them in an interesting direction. As humanity goes to the stars, it rids itself of its native bacteria, but one planet has not only embraced their innumerable single-celled cohabitants, but has discovered a method of controlling them with what they eat, in a practice connected to the five Chinese elements.
