I was mainly looking forward to description/ feeling of China in the end of the XIX century. In fact, the peak of the book was the author's description of Shanghai and the strategies of the superpowers of the époque to pursuit profit in the East. Nonetheless, I was deliciously taken on a trip around China that started with our unhappy hero in Canton (South of China), included a quick visit to the Great Wall (all the way in the north), and ended back in the warmer south.

Having read this book in

One line got my attention in this book's last chapter, it said,
"It is for others that one must learn to do everything for there lies the secret of happiness".

That sort of takes a hold of you doesn't it? Do you think that your material gains are so important that if one silly worldly downfall occurs you're done for, are you so bored of the fact that you've got everything instead of being thankful, would you consider taking your life if one ill thing happened to you?

Then you aren't happy, you are

Tribulations is okay. The plot idea of an over-pampered rich man who has everything except an idea of what to do with his life still resonates today. Kin Fo decides to end it all and for reasons best known to himself entrusts the task of killing him to his friend, the supremely competent but until now reformed assassin, Wang. What happens next is only unpredictable in the extremes to which the two of them will go.

Bearing in mind that Voyages Extraordinaires had a didactic mission, Verne does a r

There's a lot more to Jules Verne than the popular 'Around The World In Eighty Days'. Les Tribulations d'un Chinois en Chine is an exciting adventure which follows Kin-Fo, an exceedingly rich heir who is bored of the monotony of life, in his quest for excitement and ultimately to find the meaning for life, except that in so doing he ends up signing his own death warrant, flees from the appointed assassin and then desperately tries to confront the elusive assassin who could strike o

Edited (and translated?) by I.O. Evans. This is a funny little book. The plot involves a young upper-class Chinese man, already bored with life, who decides to kill himself when he loses his fortune. But then he hits on the idea of having his friend Wang, an ex-Taiping, kill him. That way, he will feel a thrill of fear, at least, before dying. Then, however, he finds his fortune is not lost, and decides he wants to live. But it's too late to stop Wang. The story is funny, there are some interest ...more

This book was okay. I didn't love it nor hated it. But I've read better books from this author though I like the whole plot of this book. It was entertaining although the ending was a bit boring a thought kin-fo was going to be killed and that would've made the book more thrilling I believe. Sun is such a coward by the way.

Despite quite a few mistakes in describing the Chinese culture e.g. their customs, behaviour, religion etc. (The Polish edition has it all explained in the afterword), the book is very good with nice sense of humour. Maybe not the best place to start the journey with Verne, but if you're a fan you'll admire it for sure.

Jules Gabriel Verne was a French author who pioneered the genre of science-fiction. He is best known for his novels "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873).

Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before navigable aircraft and practical submarines were invented, and before any means of spa
