This is a new author for me -- and while I'm weary to try new authors these days, at the same time I'm still a sucker for shifter stories (*head desk*). I do keep my expectation low, though. I find it as a great start for any story by new author :).

Good solid writing and I like the way the story and romance develops. I enjoyed it a lot, you get a real feel for Dylan's struggle and worry over his shifting. Much better than the usual high drama of pack politics and finding your mate scenario. Dylan and Chris are great sparring partners, while working on the renovation of the farmhouse. I really enjoyed this sweet shifter story. I liked Dylan and Chris and thought their relationship was interesting. I thought it worked better having it take place over a long period of time. I think it would have helped to have Chris' side of the story. The story got a bit slow in parts, I think this would have prevented that from happening. I liked seeing Dylan at work and thought that was a great element.

This book cries out for a sequel. It has a great ending but I want more to the story. I really enjoy reads like this, it's such a nice sweet romance that happens to have a werewolf or two.

What is with the blechy cover? These guys are supposed to be in their mid 20’s but here they look more like sneering kids. Definitely not like the grown-up hipster and the rough around the edges handyman they are in the story. I think I’d prefer one of those stock shirtless guy covers to this thing. Dylan is an architect in a big city hiding a big secret. Once a month he turns all wolfy and stalks the land for fresh meat. An ex-boyfriend gave him the lycanthropy bite and ever since he’s been struggling with his dual nature. He wants to run but fears hurting someone so on the advice of his brother and sister-in-law (who are aware of his secret), he buys a fixer upper of a house out in the boonies despite his reservations. There is a smaller rundown house within view of his property but he ultimately decides one neighbor is better than hundreds. But what he wasn’t betting on was having a neighbor like Chris.

Chris is a flannel shirt wearing, pee outside when no one’s looking type who lives in a paid for house and works small construction jobs only when he has to. He is grouchy and infuriatingly sexy. Dylan is a quiet, hipster type complete with soul patch who prefers to keep to himself. He needs to work and does not understand a guy like Chris. They don’t get along but because they live so damn close they find a way to make it work. Dylan hires Chris on to help him renovate the house and they argue and sidestep their mutual attraction and Chris often storms off in a pissed off huff but he always returns. After spending so many hours together they give in to their attraction and sexy times happen. It’s all rather homey and sweet until Dylan’s secret, Chris’s temper and Dylan’s evil ex-boyfriend threaten to get the best of them.

This is a great sexy little read about two guys working through the kinks in a brand new relationship and I just loved Chris who has some of the best lines in the book

“I thought you were one of those hipster assholes who says he wants to grow his own food but faints dead away the first time he realizes there ain’t no artisan falafel in the entire county.”

Their failure to communication felt very real and never teetered over into annoyingly overdone territory. It felt right and it felt real when they fought over silly little things and got all snarly (but never mean) with each other. I loved the fact that they weren’t all kissy, ooey-gooey in love from the first moment their eyes met. The secondary characters are sparse but are well developed and add some depth to Dylan’s character. There is just enough danger and action to keep the plot moving without taking away from the romance. I can easily recommend this book to any werewolf-romance fan sick of the whole soul mate crap. I liked this take on shifters because (ludicrously) it seemed realistic. There wasn't any mating/bonding scent, knotting, Alpha-Omega stuff. This is more of An American Werewolf in London-style shifter book. Because, ow, yes it would hurt. If werewolves existed, and an average Joe got turned, I can believe they would be just like Dylan.

I love Kim Fielding's writing: clear and evocative, with just the right amount of description. She does a great job getting into the heads and hearts of her main characters, and her secondary characters are also well drawn. I found the scenes of werewolf-shifting in this book to be exceedingly good, and I liked how the bits and pieces of the main character's past slowly come together like pieces of a puzzle. Another well written story by Kim Fielding.

The characters and their love story are believable, even if I felt the urge to smash their heads together to make them finally talk about their feelings. At least some of the time, when I wasn't laughing out loud or got distracted by the rather hot sex they were up to.

This is quite a recent read of mine and I was surprised! I love being surprised.

What I liked about it is that, although this is a werewolf novel, it almost doesn't read like one. It was like reading a contemporary novel that has a main character that happens to have a werewolf. I get that this might actually come across as a fault, but to me it really wasn't. I loved that the focus was how being a werewolf affected Dylan and his life, his own issues with accepting it as part of his life and how he has to adapt. It's something that's a bit rare at the moment in shifter novels which tend to centre more around pack politics or an alpha, beta or omega's duty to the pack.

Another thing that I liked was that it touched on the darker side of being one with an animal, and how the animal instincts can consume and take over the rationale, and not in a good way. I liked how Fielding showed transformation of man to animal and then back again, the change in thought process and the way instinct becomes the main navigator. Really nicely done.

And can I just say I love, love, love Chris! The moment he showed up in the book, I actually had to put the book down because I was grinning so hard and people on the bus were probably finding it creepy. I loved that both Dylan and Chris had preconceptions about each other that are completely dashed. The friendship that forms is tentative, with attraction coming in to spice things up, stir the waters in the best of ways. Both characters are strong, individually and opposites, both in ways of thinking and living, but that just makes them even hotter together—and believable as couple too, because they just fill the gaps in each other (trying not to make it sound corny). Besides, the chemistry between them is just fantastic!

It is definitely one my favourites for the werewolf themed books. Hot and fun with just the right dash of angst and you'll even get a bit of action ;)

Read it ♥ I'm sure you'll enjoy it just as much as I did.

Dylan finds the perfect place- an old farmhouse with lots of property on the edge of the national forest in the middle of nowhere. He loves the potential of the place even if it is a fixer-upper and even if he does end up with one close by neighbor. Dylan moves in and makes the snap decision to hire his fascinating neighbor, Chris.

Dylan and Chris both have misconceptions about each other that country folk and city folk tend to do, but they work past them and become friends and lovers. Chris knows that Dylan is holding back on him and keeping secrets which leads Chris to believe that -like all the others in his life- Dylan will eventually leave him. Dylan is torn about being close to Chris because he is worried that he will hurt him in wolf form and he is certain that Chris will run screaming in the other direction when he finds out that Dylan is a werewolf.

In the meantime, an ex-lover- in fact the ex-lover who changed Dylan into a werewolf- wants him back and his boss gives him the architectural assignment that Dylan feels is destined for failure. Things begin to draw in tight around Dylan and his secrets are about to find their way into the open.

The plot rambled along in a gentle manner that I enjoyed. Not to say that it was lacking in action because there was plenty of that between the relationship between Dylan and Chris and the tense moments between Dylan and his ex. It just seemed to focus more on the gradual build of a relationship between Dylan and Chris and also the steady pace of Dylan growing into his own.

I really liked the characters including Dylan's brother and sister in law. Chris absolutely cracked me up from the first moment he enters the picture. He is Dylan's perfect match because he challenges him to loosen up, live a little and think outside the box which is what Dylan needs because he is wound so tight after becoming a werewolf.

Another good story from this author that will appeal to m/m paranormal romance fans.(less)

I enjoyed Kim Fielding’s "Brute" so much, that I decided to dive right into another of her books at once--- "Good Bones."

(Shifter novels seem to be more numerous than tales of vampires or the Fae or what have you.) I’ve read a handful of these books, with mixed results; while my reading experience has been pleasant enough, I can’t say that most of the novels distinguished themselves in a...more I enjoyed Kim Fielding’s "Brute" so much, that I decided to dive right into another of her books at once--- "Good Bones."

(Shifter novels seem to be more numerous than tales of vampires or the Fae or what have you.) I’ve read a handful of these books, with mixed results; while my reading experience has been pleasant enough, I can’t say that most of the novels distinguished themselves in any particular way. J.L. Merrow’s "Camwolf" was probably the best story of this sort that I’ve read so far.

Well, I’m happy to add "Good Bones" to the upper tier of shifter stories---though with my limited experience in the genre, perhaps that isn’t as high a compliment as I intend it to be! This book was completely unlike the other Kim Fielding fantasy stories I’ve read; if I hadn’t known she wrote it, I probably would never have guessed that this was written by the same author who was responsible for "Brute" and the "Stasis" trilogy. Though the subject matter and overall tone are different than her other books, what all her stories do have in common is a polished writing style and very likeable characters.

The story is told from Dylan’s point of view, and because of this perhaps we don’t get to know Chris quite as well as I would have preferred. I really was curious to learn at least a little more of his backstory. While a few facts are dropped regarding his past---and they give us a hint as to why he’s a bit defensive and skittish when it comes to relationships---I wanted to know more. Likewise, I wouldn’t have minded having even a few additional paragraphs telling us more about the fellow who turned Dylan in the first place. I sense a quite tragic story there, but we never get to hear it. While he’s the villain of the piece, Dylan’s “alpha” doesn’t come into the story very much.

Adding to the book’s appeal for me, is the fact that it talks a bit about home renovation---I love stories where an old house is being done over! All the details seem to be pretty accurate in this regard, with the exception of how quickly the two fellows make the repairs/do the remodeling. Painful experience has taught me just how long and drawn-out this kind of work can be---it ALWAYS takes much longer---and costs much more---than you think it will.

So---if you’re a fan of shifter stories, this gets a definite recommendation. And heck, even if you are unfamiliar with the genre and are only into fantasy in a more general sense, I’ll still recommend it---I liked it.

I’ve become an admirer of Fielding’s work, and look forward to her next book ("Venetian Masks"). And I believe she has already written a sequel to "Good Bones," though there is absolutely no time-table on a release. But---I’ll buy the book in an instant, when it comes out---I wouldn’t mind finding out what happens to these two fellows next.(less)

Its hard to find a new slant in a genre that has flooded the market to the point where most stories feel tired and repetative, especially when it comes to the paranormal - vampires and werewolves in particular.

How refreshing to find a werewolf novel that bucks against the trend. I loved this, the paranormal aspect was cleverly done and the underlying danger and tension in the story works into the plot perfectly.

This is the second Kim Fielding book I've read (the first was Brute). It's also the first shapeshifter/werewolf m/m romance I have purchased, and I do not regret it. I liked all three, but wasn't entirely kind to the genre in my previous review, noting that on the basis of the first two examples I'd read, one common feature seemed to be horribly written stilted dialog -- though I also said that I found the characterizations largely well-done, and that the genre was likely a new guilty pleasure.

I should have known better than to make snap judgments based on only two examples. Kim Fielding's Good Bones was an unconditional pleasure to read, not just a guilty one. Her dialog feels real, like something people actually say and not just prose written inside quotation marks. One thing it did have in common with the other two examples was that it was an extremely quick read (a single sitting this afternoon), but that's not altogether a complaint.

Fielding does a fantastic job at bringing her characters to life. Not only Dylan and Chris, the protagonists, but Dylan's brother and sister-in-law were fully fleshed out, believable people; I know real people just like all four of these characters, and the world they inhabit is the same one I do, except for the werewolves. Oh, and speaking of those, Fielding's werewolves felt to me much more like real wolves, much more what I want from werewolves in fiction, than the mind-speaking, instant-mating, human-minds-in-wolf-bodies nearly everyone else writes. Kudos for that.

Even Fielding's antagonist, Andy, is complicated and three-dimensional. There's a poignancy to his villainy, which villainy itself is almost accidental and offering subtle shades of gray.

In terms of Dylan and Chris's relationship, too, its progression, doubts, hesitations, missteps, all were quite believable. I've had relationships that remind me of theirs, and I found myself oddly moved (if often exasperated, though that's also true to life) by this romance that felt far-less melodramatic than I'd come to expect.(less)

What he doesn't count on is his hunky and handy neighbor Chris Nock who he reluctantly hires to help him renovate his new (dilapidated) house. In spite of his resolve to never get romantically involved with another person, the two men begin falling in love. Dylan is able to sneak away during a couple of full moons, but knows that eventually, he'll have to tell Chris that he is a werewolf, certain that once he finds out, it will be the end of their relationship. To add an extra twist to the tale, the wolf that bit Dylan, his alpha Andy, reappears into Dylan's life commanding him to come back and to be part of Andy's pack. Ultimately, Dylan has to decide between joining Andy's pack (which consists of only Andy at the moment) or staying with Chris in the hopes that he will not run off once he discovers Dylan's true nature.

One of things that I really liked about this book was that both of the characters were flawed in their own way and each had to come to terms with their own self-esteem issues - both felt that they were not worthy of or deserved the other. The romance that slowly grew between the two men was very well done and I felt that I really knew and could easily relate to both Dylan and Chris by the end of the story.

The storyline was intriguing and was a pleasant mix of romance, humor and suspense. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Fielding's work and recommend this novel to anyone who loves a good shifter story -- or simply enjoys a well-written romance between two manly men. I give it five howling stars out of five! *****(less)

Being a young and talented architect is difficult, especially when you are a werewolf. Dylan loves his job, but he's afraid of hurting people. I would have to say that this is a male romance novel. Boy meets boy falls in love but that whole turning furry on the full moon drives a wedge between them. It follows the same formula as female romance books but the main characters are men, hot men. There are a few pretty hot and heavy sex scenes so if that makes you squeamish this might not be the book for you. I thought it was great. I liked the main characters, the secondary characters and the story was fun.

This is going to be short and sweet, because this story has left me without anything to complain about and without the words to swoon properly. When I read this story I got that feeling I always long for when I’m reading a book, but that is so rare to find. I just felt a sense of completeness when I put it down, and I couldn’t stop smiling. I loved this book so much. The characters were wonderful and engaging. And even though we only saw the world from Dylan's POV the writing was so good that we really get a sense of who Chris is and what is in his heart.

Good Bones was a nice read. I asked myself as I was reading this book what would I have done, if I woke up one morning and found I had turned into a werewolf the night before. How would I deal?, and I think Dylan did a job of dealing with a bad situation. His logical approach of locking himself every full moon and when that proved to problematic. The fact he wasn’t dealing with his affliction alone. Even though a lack of that element would have provided some nice conflict.

I didn’t miss it because the drama between Chris and Dylan was enough. Two people damaged by circustamnces obviously deep into to each but each fears of abandonment left a wall between them that Chris couldn’t see past and often lead to misunderstandings. And left Dylan constantly reassuring and apologetic. Just goes to show you even the big bad wolf has commitment issues. Dylan was my favorite character and I like his progression of awkward uncertain young man to the man who would protect his lover with his life, cause essentially that’s what he did. Andy wasn’t a bad villain but there could have been more of him in the story.

Things I didn’t like the characters came off as a bit cookie cutter, Chris’s character some would say he’s multi fasciated. And its not improbable for a guy to be a “hot” red neck. That cooks like julia Child, reads Kurt Vonnegut, Jack London and still rugged enough to take a piss outside believable. But the mixture of hot red neck that reads Kurt Vonnegut don’t quite sell me, but it did make him interesting. Andy the villain’s end read as a last minute thought. Dylan and Kay’s interactions were so sweet but felt unrealistic at times. No fights, no disagreements now I’m not saying they had to go at each other like wrestlers, but an occasional hang up. When he wouldn’t listen to reason or silent treatment when Dylan deserved it would have been a nice balance. Geez Matty and Dylan’s I found more real she gave him more of a hard time than Kay and she loved him too.

But I’m splitting hairs maybe it just my personality quirk. The sex scenes were rampant through out and hot as lava but I wanted to see more intimacy between them. I really got the feeling that was all their relationship consisted of. I know relationships in the beginning are based on attraction lust whatever you want to call it. But at some point the intimacy needed grow there were signs but not enough for me. Chris was constantly taking offense (an inferior complex no doubt born from a the early abandonment of his mother) and Dylan always apologetic and reassuring that got old after awhile.

Even though my critiques seem harsh I did enjoy Good Bones but the story could have used more pages to tidy things up, Chris and Dylan’s relationship I was curious to see how they dealt with each other now that the secret was out of the bag, Rick and Kay’s good news I wanted to see the progression that would have warped things up more neatly since this is a stand alone book and not a series so I gave it a three and a half stars for those reasons.

Dylan is a gay architect who has essentially given up on love ever since he was turned into a werewolf. He's afraid of putting anyone at risk. And not just a potential boyfriend. It's been getting harder and harder to lock himself up during the full moon while living in the city. So he decides to buy a rural old home and renovate the place to live as secluded a life as possible.

He has one neighbor, a sexy country-boy named Chris. He becomes Dylan's love interest and there is so much more to him than meets the eye. Dylan hires him to help out with fixing up the house and from there, it's all about watching the evolution of their relationship. At first, they are prickly and unsure. Then friends. Then more.

While Dylan is the main character, it's Chris who is the heart of this book. Neither man considers himself worthy of love, but it's Chris who made me so invested. Chris, whose feelings I wanted to protect. He starts out with all these defense mechanisms, but we see them all crumble as he falls head over heels with Dylan. He doesn't believe in his own worth. Chris knows Dylan is hiding something, and fears rejection at every turn. It really pulled on my heartstrings.

"You don't trust me... Can't break up you ain't really together," Chris answered.

Finally he turned to face Dylan. He looked sad, pitying maybe, but not angry. "I'm still going to do this Dylan. Still gonna work for you and cook for you, and we can still fuck, because I'm willin' to make do with that little. It's more'n I've had before, anyway. And maybe it's for the best, 'cause then you won't break my fuckin' heart when you leave."

I kept waiting with my heart in my throat, in fear that poor Chris would get hurt, whether it would be because of Dylan's fears, or his secret, or the shady ex-boyfriend who is a threat on multiple levels.

The sex is good. I cared about the characters. I loved watching them come together. There was action and romance and a surprising amount of heart. I liked it a lot. 4 stars.

Good Bones is a delightfully sexy and emotionally fulfilling MM romance. Well written with well plumbed characters and a engaging story line. Heavily character driven, Dylan may be the main character but Chris steals the show. His insecurities steal your heart as you watch him try to understand why Dylan is attracted to him. Add the fact that he knows Dylan is hiding something from him makes for some emotionally impacting scenes.

I enjoyed the slow build up of their relationship. Ms. Fielding allows them to become friends and work through issues on both sides before facilitating a romantic connection. Hot sexual tension makes for wonderful smexy times as Dylan and Chris don't have a single problem relating to each other in bed.

The secondary characters round out the story perfectly. From Dylan's lovable and nosy brother and sister in law to the villainous ex boyfriend, they keep the story clipping along at a steady pace. The ending is dramatic and heartfelt as the conflict is addressed and handled in a impacting fashion. Everything resolves itself nicely and our heroes get their much deserved HEA.
