Unlike some of the others on here, I have not yet read the first book in the series, and this is my first Bronwen book. That said, I will definitely be picking up some more of her books in the very near future. I did not find the writing choppy and appreciated the extra details that the author included like details about how Whist is played. I also appreciated that Miss Evans chose to give her heroine such traumatic hardships to overcome. I've been in a romance book binge as of late andwas becom...more
I enjoyed Daring the Duke of Dangerfield, so I was looking forward to reading the next book in the series - but this one was not on a par with it at all.
First, the writing wasn't up to scratch. There were far too many instances when I had to stop, reread then scan ahead just to work out who was talking or whose POV we were in.
And shining - as in her eyes or his eyes or even the sun were shining is NOT spelled SHINNING!!!
Then there were the unrealistic 'you are kidding me' moments - the highly u...more

To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone is the ARe Cafe top pick in historical romance for February.
Review:
Sabine Fournier had dreams of being in her lover’s arms since she was a young woman, but things far more sinister than rising above her station stopped her from being with the man she loved. Arriving back in London as the Contessa Orsini, a rich Italian widow, she could never tell Marcus the real reason she shunned his offer so long ago. He is the only one who can help get revenge on the man wh...more

I think this book had good potential, but its downfall was that it wasn't carried out in a manner befitting the potential of such a plot. Instead it came off quite rushed while the main characters were too. . . contradictory. I felt that the main male character moved on too quick from what he was feeling toward the main female character, and in fact forgave her far too easily, when you were supposed to get this idea that he has been holding onto his anger, his hatred toward the main female for t...more
This is a more somber tale than it's predecessor. You think it's going to be about a battle of wills but instead it is about regret, facing the past and choices made to protect those you love.
I finished this (it is a long novella) but it was afterwards when things about the book started to annoy me.
WARNING SPOILERS
Things like:
- Sabine plans the downfall of our villain, buying up his markers, finding out about his bets and his finances, what you assume is quite a bit of research and planning and...more

Sabine thought her life was going to end up like a fairy tale. She was in love with Marcus Danvers, the Marquis of Wolverstone, and had high hopes she was going to marry him, which would be a huge jump in station for her. But they both loved each other and nothing else mattered. So when Sabine suddenly elopes with a Comte, Marcus is stunned and it quickly turns into anger. Anger that has simmered for ten years and he has done whatever he can to extract the blond beauty from him mind. When the lo...more
Thank you Maria for this awesome recommendation. Reading this, brought back memories of Almost Heaven. They both have similar plots in the sense that Marcus and Sabine loved each other, but due to misunderstanding they were separated for ten years. But I would never have guessed the reason Sabine left. And Marcus, I could feel his pain on every word he said to Sabine.
Characters that I loved -

This is the first book I have read by bronwen Evans and it won't be the last. It had it all - passionate sex, a great storyline, good strong characters and a nasty "baddie" - if her other books are like this one and I will be investigating, I want more! The only reason I awarded four stars and not five, is due to the omission by the author, not to mention how the death of one of the characters, was explained to the authorities, no further mention was made, it went straight to the epilogue, which...more
Absolutely loved it, especially as it was not too long and I could read the book in a few hours and so didn't have to suffer a sleepless night to carry on reading!
I loved how our hero, Marcus, was so hurt by Sabine and still raging after ten years. It really showed in the bitter dialogue between them. The scene with his mother was beautifully written. I liked the way the author switched between what he was saying and what he was really thinking.

The 2nd book of this series. I loved it. From the start to finish. Too bad it is a novella, it would be more exciting and thrilling if it is a novel. Nevertheless I felt the author covered everything. The plot of the story is same book of HR I read. I already know what happened to heroine from chapter 2. What I liked about this story are the characters of the h/h. I really felt the emotions that each dialogue the h/h have. I also felt the frustration for the heroine to just the truth!

I don't find anything romantic about a young lady of 18 being raped, which resulted in her becoming pregnant. This is not a good story line. Sabine's life with the man she loved the Marquis of Wolverstone "Marcus" lives have been ruined and they have now been separated for 10yrs. Sabine pretended to elope with another man so her unborn child would not become Marcus' heir, because he was not his son. Sabine did the honorable thing, but it destroyed her and Marcus' life because he didn't know why...more
To Wager the Marquis of Wolverstone is book two in the Wicked Wagers trilogy and it is a dark delightful addition.
Marcus Danvers, the Marquis of Wolverstone, is a man who takes what he wants and doesn’t care who is left wanting. A past hurt has changed him forever and if his cold demeanor doesn’t suit you, well just walk away. He will make no apologies and will not ask for forgiveness. His tough exterior begins to crack when the reason for his cold heart reenters his life…Sabine.

2nd to The Wicked Wagers Trilogy. So far nothing in the 2books annoyed or disappointed me. It has mystery, action and romance. Neither too long nor too short. This 2 out of 3 books is the best historical romance I've read so far. Until this, Jude Deveraux has been my favorite historical romance writer but honestly as much as I love historical romance, it isn't the historical places but rather the manner, culture and people that draws me so this genre and I've found all my preferences in Brownwen...more
Ummmm...intense! This is the kind of book that you remember and enjoy reading it again and again. I loved MARCUS'S intense electrifying jolts of emotions that were jumping out from the book, like he was spitting venom in the beginning. Bronwen delivered the dialogues perfectly to display his hurt feelings. The chemistry between the characters ,dialogues, pacing all was good.
Would recommend friends to gie it a try, infact the whole series.

I truly enjoyed this book. Both lovers are wounded and keep dark secrets from one another. The pace of the book is very good. The romantic interludes are quite descriptive and inspiring. Marcus and Sabine will stay in my mind for a long time. This was a story that had both heart and intelligence. I greatly enjoyed it.
I found myself re-reading sentences over and over again. I thought it was me and my non-existant attention span, but after reading other reviews for ths book, others were in the same situation. I liked the story, just wished it was a bit longer.

My 2011 debut Regency historical, INVITATION TO RUIN, is a Nominee for Best First Historical, RT Reviewer's Choice Awards.
I'm a proud reader and writer of Romance! Any romance, but historical romance in particular, and the Regency period is my favorite. I live in Wellington, New Zealand and I'm one of five sisters - and I am a twin! So no surprise that my first book is about twins!
