I was relatively underwhelmed by this breezy piece of fluff horror that was neither compelling in its story telling nor did it really do anything to distinguish itself from any other fluff horror story. I realize this may be a harsh indictment of the work, but there were a couple detractors that really stood out.

Ultimately, SORROW CREEK (SC) is a story about a Louisiana couple (Max and Casi) who are haunted by the vengeful spirit innured by cajun voodoo magic. The plot is fairly straightforward...more I was relatively underwhelmed by this breezy piece of fluff horror that was neither compelling in its story telling nor did it really do anything to distinguish itself from any other fluff horror story. I realize this may be a harsh indictment of the work, but there were a couple detractors that really stood out.

Ultimately, SORROW CREEK (SC) is a story about a Louisiana couple (Max and Casi) who are haunted by the vengeful spirit innured by cajun voodoo magic. The plot is fairly straightforward, with Max becoming the target of the sexual wiles of this vengeful spirit who intends to sacrifice Max to the bayou dark gods so that this spirit can take mortal form. Casi (Max's loyal wife) goes after Max and confronts the spirit. The spirit is vanquished and all live happily ever after... the end.

As noted before, two negatives jumped out at me (beyond the breezy prose style and banal conception of the supernatural element) as I was reading.

1) Horrific beginning imagery with the death of Max's dog.

The story really started off with a bang and had me wondering where this story was going. Unfortunately, as the story progressed, the visceral imagery of Max's butchered pet added very little layering to setting and atmosphere , and frankly, made zero sense to the story. Basically, this was nothing more than a cheap trick by the authors to titalize the reader with a gorey plot device... a la Stephen King.

2) Attack by the swamp gator.

On the way to finding Max, Casi falls out of a boat and both her and her buddy are attacked by a large alligator, which is swiftly dispatched by one of the heroes armed with a .45. This scene was pretty ridiculous, and despite the "action", really took away from story pacing. This scene really felt like another cheap attempt at generating some kind of drama for a story that was badly lacking in the drama department.

I won't characterize this story as being terrible, hence the two stars... and I will credit the authors for providing a decent story setting in the Louisiana bayou, however, this one can probably be assessed as one of the weakest novellas released this year by the publisher, Darkfuse.

So far this has been Hawkes and Fullbright's second novella published by Darkfuse, and I think it is fair to say that neither have blown me away, SC in particular. Definitely one to be skipped. (less)
