Bailey McMillan’s life is a mess. The general public blames him for his former employer’s nuclear pollution, resulting in professional disgrace. Humiliated, he takes a job as an editor at a science magazine run by his best friend, John. That part isn’t so bad; Bailey is fond of John, who seems to find Bailey’s abrasive nature amusing.

Unfortunately, working for John also le...more

3.5 stars. This is a very slow burn romance with crackling, laugh-out-loud dialogue and great characters. I actually slowed myself down while reading so I could savour the writing.

Bailey is the ultimate absent-minded, bad tempered geek. He's totally elitist when it comes to science. His previous employer misused his work in a terrible way and Bailey was blamed by the public and his peers. He retreated to his home to lick his wounds and has only started to come back to life since his good friend...more

Smash That Formula To Smithereens!!

Bailey McMillan is one cranky scientific genius. His career and reputation were ruined by his former employer and, man, is he bitter about that. Now, he's almost 40, pudgy, balding and working at his long-time and best friend John's science magazine as an editor , columnist and fact checker. This is not where Bailey thought he would be at this point in his life.

There's one thing that Bailey loves about working at Spark though. He gets to write a scathing column...more

What a surprise....
This had all the right ingredients to put me - gently - to sleep but it didn`t.
A character driven story heavy on dialogue - loved the constant bickering between John and Bailey - that pulled me in from page one despite the irritating POV.At first third person POV from both John and Bailey but then John`s POV simply disappeared and till the end of the story it was just Bailey`s.It bothered me because I would have liked more of John`s POV - knowing more about his increasing jeal...more

1,5 stars.

I didn't hate it - and that is pretty much the nicest thing to say about that book. It was not funny at all and the "banter" between the two MCs was so lame it didn't deserve to be called banter at all.
I disliked Bailey, the genius, tremendously. It just grates your nerves to constantly hear how brilliant he is, how he is the smartest person in any given room, how boring all other less brilliant people are. He came across not so much brilliant but more arrogant a**. People who judge o...more

I think the blurb does an excellent job as describing the story, so I won’t bore you by rehashing it again. Instead, I thought I would give the reasons why I enjoyed this book, and why I rated it the way I did.

I’ve read several of Alix Bekins books and I’ve enjoyed every one of them. When I pick up a book written by this author, I automatically know I’ll have several hours of shameless entertainment with intelligent, witty and sarca

Fan Fiction: To start, after I read this I saw several reviews that said this was a fan fiction of a show called Stargate Atlantis. I've never seen this show so I checked Wikipedia & it turns out Bailey McMIllan is identical to Dr. Rodney McKay.
(view spoiler)[ McKay played piano as a child but turned to science after he was told he was a fine technical player but had no sense of art. Ditto for Bailey.

Mckay built an atomic bomb in sixth grade science fair. In the book Bailey mentions he was

This was a rather enjoyable, down-to-earth story. I was looking for a good, basic romance, and this book delivered.

It's fairly unusual for modern romance novels to address the practical awkward moments that may arise in relationships. This book does so- and that may be a decent portion of why I like it so much. While a number of novels may note the characters' insecurities, these character flaws are typically more dramatic and are used to further the reader's understanding of the characters. Her...more

This was a very nice, very slow burn romance story. In fact, it was so slow burn that the MC couple, Bailey and John, didn't get together as anything other than friends until after 85% of the story was complete.

Bailey was a total geek, Mensa level genius, doctorate in physics who was hired by his friend John to be a staff writer on John's magazine when Baily was blasted by the scientific community for his work with a company that was ultimately censored for a project which Bailey led. Although...more

I enjoyed this story more than I expected to. It was consistently funny and enjoyable, and easily maintained my interest without being filled with serious drama or angst.

I especially loved Bailey, the main character. He is a complete mess, a neurotic genius who can never quite seem to contain the pressure of his thoughts -- which are constantly flying off in all directions at once. The author did a great job of making him both obnoxious and sympathetic at the same time, while constantly poking f...more

I liked the other story I read by this author and this one has a lot of that same snarky humour which works for me. Baily is a genius scientist, however when one of his projects went bad (not his fault) he sort of got blackballed (it doesn’t help that he’s not afraid to call his peers idiots publicly and to their face) and now works for his friend John’s science magazine. However to appeal to a wider audience, he’s forced to do an astrology column in exchange for a column where he can call out h...more

I am huge fan of friends-to-lovers stories if they are written right. Not only was this one written right, it now ranks up there as one of my favorite friends-to-lovers stories ever.

Bailey is a genius scientist who was publicly disgraced when his former employers used his work in the wrong way. He is humiliated and vilified by the science community. He is pushing 40, balding and slightly pudgy (as he describes himself). His friend, John, hires him as an editor for his small science magazine. Joh...more

Wonderful... if:

- You don't want romance straight away (it is slow to come)
- You don't mind reading about Hero 1 having dates and sex with other people. But RELAX, NO CHEATING. It was BEFORE he got romantically involved with Hero 2.
- You don't mind little sex as long as the sex is hot and cute.

AND if:

- You like varied and uncommon characters. You'll have a BLAST!
- You like them nerdy-smarty-grouchy and witty-funny. That's Bailey for you.
- You like when the 2 heroes bicker to death! I absolutely...more

This was my first book by Ms. Bekins and I must say I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I'm always skeptical reading new authors (although that never stops me) but this story drew me in right from the start with its wit, sarcasm and fun plot.

The blurb does a pretty good job of highlighting the main points of what the story is about. The 'experiment' Bailey plays out is quite a big part of the story, actually, and not only is it hysterical what Bailey gets himself into but his wallowing in se...more

If I wanted to read Stargate Atlantis fanfic, I would go read Stargate Atlantis fanfic. I don't even like the show, and I still had no difficulty recognizing the parallels, of which there were very very many. It's too bad, because the writing was serviceable and the plot relatively fun; I just couldn't get beyond mentally substituting "Rodney" for "Bailey" every time the arrogant genius astrophysicist double-PhD socially-maladapted citrus-allergic stocky balding mc with a woman's first name, a C...more

A great read, really funny and relaxing.
It did have a downside and here I kind of agree with most of the reviewers: the lack of passion between Bailey and John. I felt their relationship was believable but did lack that spark and maybe an amount of good angst towards the end of the book. ON THE OTHER HAND…let’s be a little rational here…do you really think that would have really been believable considering how the MCs were conveyed? They were rational, pragmatic men, Bailey is a genius…..would w...more

The writing is decent, which is why I'm giving it two stars, but for the rest... this is thinly veiled Stargate: Atlantis fanfiction, and the moment I noticed it I couldn't keep reading. I didn't like Rodney in SGA, and I don't like him here either.

If you're okay with a really annoying, really self-absorbed, and really arrogant main character, then maybe this book won't irritate you as much as it did me. Though in that case, I would recommend just reading the endless amount of "McShep" fanfics y...more

I really really really really liked this one. It's probably more like 4.5 stars for me. More like I loved it than I "really liked it" or "it was amazing". But can't do partials.

As other reviews have said, this is totally a name search and replace Stargate Atlantis fanfic, AU of course. But I'm a huge SGA fangirl and love the fanfic so it was just right for me.

I can't give any input on what reading this as someone who has never seen the show, but as a fangirl, LOVE it. Long. Plotty. Characters...more

A sweet, slow-building love story concerning two best friends, who find that the love that they both had been searching for had been right in front of them the whole time. It is quirky, and humorous at times, with characters who are not the usual type featured in romances - over 40, Mensa IQ's, thinning hair and geeks. In fact, that is part of why this story works, as much of their relationship is based in their friendship rather than physical attraction (although that is present too, just not a...more

This started out really slow. If you like slow and sweet, you will enjoy this. Bailey is a pretentious, cranky, egotistical adorable absent minded professor type. You might say he is a science snob. John is his boss. They are best friends. It takes them a little while while to figure out that they were meant for each other. And the way that they go about getting from point A to point B, can be hilarious at times.

This is the first book that I've read by this author, I will be adding her to my au...more

So, I love building, slow-burn romances. Love them. Thus my choice of this book...which was, hmmm, okay. And I strongly like and prefer realistic characters. Really do. Thus, again, my choice of this book...and these characters, well they were *sigh* okay.

So first things first, there was no burn and no build. Yes, Bailey and John are friends and Bailey believes that he has a crush on John, much the same as he 'suffered' at the beginning of their friendship years ago, though he thinks he's gotten...more

4.5 stars - I'm actually rather shocked by just how quickly I fell in love with this book and by how much I enjoyed it. Written in the Stars is an extremely slow building romance and usually that would have annoyed and frustrated me, but that really wasn't the case. The romance built perfectly and the story was entertaining enough that the slow pace didn't make it seem drawn out or frustrating. The only frustrating thing for me was when Bailey insisted to himself that John wasn't interested - it...more

I was pleasantly surprised, having given up the hope of ever reading another m/m book with solid characters. However, I just found it a little hard to believe that lots of hot guys would want to sleep with Bailey, who was described to be slightly on the chubbier side and not spectacularly attractive. Gay or straight, most beautiful people usually have very high opinion of themselves. That said, I enjoyed the love story, though I would have liked to see Bailey go on another date with Dan. I was a...more

I'm a big fan of snappy dialogue and this book delivered. I loved the banter between Bailey and John, and I also enjoyed the array of blind dates invented by the author. The is a story with a clever premise full of bright, snarky talk from attractive, quirky men, which happens to be my preferred form of entertainment. (I love the new BBC Sherlock for instance.) So this isn't so much a review as a rave, but if you enjoy contemporary romance with a brain, I'd recommend Written in the Stars.

This was such a delightful book! I couldn't get enough of Bailey's and John's constant bickering (it cracked me up every single time when Bailey told John that he hated him or something similiar *g*) and their friendship was definitely the best part. I also liked to read about all the different dates :)
I felt that the book was a little bit too long though and I would have prefered to read more about the attraction between Bailey and John and how they became more than friends eventually!

4.5 stars. This book is just plain fun. There's no doubt where the story is going, but watching Bailey and John get there is a pleasure. Bailey is brilliant, a bit reclusive, prickly, abrasive and yet sweet at heart. John is also bright but more practical, better with people, and Bailey's best friend. The banter between them is the best part of the book. I know a lot of excessively bright people, and so often a line or comment just rang true. Even the line "I always suspected that a lot of the r...more

The characters were cute and it wasn't boring at all - though you have to wait for more than 12 dates (with 12 different characters) for the real romance to start.
The guys are in their late thirties and ealy forties making this a more mature romance that the usual teenage angst MM romances. In this stories the guys know who they are and have been through a lot and are now finally discovering what is the right person to stand besides them.

A fun and entertaining story. One I really liked despite the fact I couldn't stop picturing Baily as Rodney from SGA. Mostly because of that whole I am the genius and nobody is as good as I am. Now, normally I don't find that trait attractive, but for some reason I found Baily and his frustrations charming and endearing.
The rest of the characters served their purpose, but I would liked to have learned more about some of them. Especially John. And I have to wonder where his perspective disappeare...more

“For once in his life, Bailey felt like he couldn't keep up. He was blaming the long week and the relaxed interactions with Dan that had thrown him off his game, but still. The man was clearly not making any sense. First he was making a move on Bailey, and then he was probing about his stupid crush on John, and then he was offering to have rebound sex (not that Bailey had "bounced" against John, or however the analogy went; sports were definitely not his thing). And now Dan wanted to brainstorm seduction tactics so he could "get" John.

"Who the hell are you?" Baily asked, mystified.

Just like in the beginning, Dan gave hime one of those million-dollar smiles. "I'm the man who is going to get you a boyfriend.”
