So Robert Arthurt is caught up in redistricting and sent to Lovecraft Middle School. None of his friends are transferred there with him....well other than the bully who's been the bane of Robert's life all through school, of course. Robert isn't happy about being sent to a Middle School other than the one where all his friends are going... But that could be the least of the problems involved in attending Lovecraft Middle School.

Oh yeah.

When kids start to vanish and two headed rats try to commun

Cute book! Had an ARC in the staff lounge at our Main branch, and as I had to work there today and had forgotten to bring any of the FOUR books I had started at home, I picked this up.

Robert Arthur is a victim of redistricting; all his friends will go to Franklin Middle School on the north side of town. Robert must attend Lovecraft Middle School on the south side of town. He knows no one there, no one at all - except Glenn Torkells, the bully who has tormented him since he started his academic c
In the interests of full disclosure I should admit I only picked this up to see how Lovecraftian Lovecraft Middle School really was. Sadly for me, but luckily for the parents of any children who might read it and be responsible for psychiatric bills, the answer is: Not Very. Instead we have a nicely illustrated and lightly charming supernatural story that could have drawn its inspiration from almost any source, a la Goosebumps. While unlikely to scar children for life, this first installment of ...more

I've been struggling all year to find a book my reading-challenged child could tackle without causing any kind of serious crisis. While I know he can read more mature books, I've tried throwing all kinds of things at him—books, I mean, not heavy furniture or small animals! So far I have ben rebuffed on everything from Percy Jackson to Parable of the Sower.

Then I picked up Professor Gargoyle, the first book in the Tales from Lovecraft Middle School series and finished it up in an afternoon. Seri

I loved this new middle grade fiction series. The cover is fantastically creepy. The adventure is fast-paced. The story compelling. I can't wait to read volume 2.
The idea of writing any Lovecraft themes into fiction for younger kids kind of intrigues me because it's such an interesting challenge. Thanks to the standards set years ago by Stine's Goosebumps series, publishers are fairly aware that younger children are not only willing to read books where the endings might be ambiguous and the horror is more than just someone in a rubber mask ala Scooby Doo. No worries parents, the horror in here is still fairly squeaky clean and there's no blood or gore he ...more

This book took me back to reading stories like The Witches by Roald Dahl. It was a little twisted, dark and amazingly fun and imaginative.

Robert is in an area of town that has been re-districted, and now he has to attend the new school, Lovecraft Middle School. He's pretty shy and once he gets to school we can see that he is bullied. That's right, how lucky is he to have his bully reassigned to the new school as well.

His teachers and the whole feeling of his new school feel off, and he's never

My Thoughts:
This is book ONE in the LOVECRAFT MIDDLESCHOOL series.

In this book we are introduced to the series, which revolves around the newly built “Lovecraft Middle School”. We also meet our main character Robert Arthur. The story follows Robert on his journey as he goes to a new school. Along the way, he makes some very unlikely friends and they all work together to solve the mystery of the scary things going on in the school.

I enjoyed getting to know Robert and his new friends. As a child,

I have to talk about the design of this book. Firstly the front cover is a hologram which drew me in, the cover tells you what kind of story lies in the pages ahead and I loved that. The typography and extras used throughout the cover are awesome. Inside is equally stunning from the paper quality to the luxurious end papers to the fascinating emblem, that makes you want to dive in and find out what it all means. I have the second book, The Slither Sisters and it's presented the same way. These b ...more
I was pleasantly surprised by this little book. I suppose it’s a bit Harry Potter-esque but for younger readers. Robert starts at Lovecraft Middle School, a brand new state of the art facility but much to his dismay the bully from his old school is there too. As if Robert’s life wasn’t hard enough already he has to deal with all sorts of strange occurrences from a hidden attic in the library to a two-headed rat and a teacher who is especially horrible.

There are two elements to this book really.
I cannot fail to mention how nicely packaged this book is. This small hardback book’s cover features a lenticular portrait of Professor Gargoyle, enabling the reader to see the teacher morph into a monster before their very eyes! I believe each book in the series will feature a different character. I don’t think I’ve seen this idea used for book covers before, but it’s a creative idea and I suspect it will attract the younger readers. In fact, I’ve spent a fair amount of time moving the cover ba ...more

Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #1: Professor Gargoyle / 1594745919

"Tales from Lovecraft Middle School" is a new YA series I've stumbled into; the books are set in a world much like our own, with the minor difference that no one has ever heard of H.P. Lovecraft, and Cthulhu and Shoggoths and whatnot all exist and are rapidly crawling out of the woodwork at the local brand-new middle school. And our everyman YA protagonist Robert Arthur is stuck in the middle between the adults-who-don't-know

This kid name Robbert Arthur was surrounded by strangers.Every school night he stands by the entrance to love craft middle school watching the students pass by searching for familiar faces. All of his old friends were attending Franklin middle school in the north part of town, but somehow Robbert got stuck attending Love craft middle school in the south part of town.
Non-canonical (?) intro to the Cthulhu Mythos* and its environs (Dunwich) - perfect fluffy yog-sothothery for yr inner latchkey kid.

But, warning, the lenticular professor-into-demon morph cover is Grade-A nightmare fuel.

Wasn't too keen on the message that if you're bullied you should just put up with that shit because, one day, your locker will become an interdimensional portal of outer madness that, on threat of tentacular horrordeath, convinces the bully to see and repent of the error of his
A book especially written for kids, set in Dunwich and featuring Azaroth and the Great Old Ones? Where was this genre when I was a creepy little girl? All we ever had were the Bunnicula books (a great series in its own right, of course).

Because of its intended audience, the book is somewhat simplistic, but the idea and setting are quite interesting. It doesn't manage to engender the eeriness of H.P. Lovecraft's original works, but it still is interesting to read the story of a boy growing up in

Yippeee! Got a copy of this at Book Expo 2012 and am as excited about reading it as I was mesmerized by its cover, which actually (although not on the advance readers' paperback copies, of course) displays a changing image depending on how you move the book--at first glance, it's a mild-mannered, even befuddled/tired looking older, bearded man. Tilt the book a bit and the image becomes what you see here, the grinning, horned, rather demonic man. Lenticular printing: look it up, it's cool. Quirk ...more

This is the first book in a new series, Tales from Lovecraft Middle School, by Charles Gilman. The first thing you will notice when looking at these books is the really cool cover. Technically called "lenticular printing", this book features a portrait of science professor Garfield Goyle, both in his human form and inhuman form. This should give you a really good idea of what the book is about - things at Lovecraft Middle School aren't what they seem.

Robert was all set to go to middle school wit

Book #! in a new series. Charles Gilman is the pseudonym of Jason Rekulak, the publisher at Quirk Books, the same people who brought us Ransom Riggs “Peculiar Children” books. So I guess he didn't have any trouble getting a book contract—for himself! Laughing. This book is definitely middle grade, not YA. And they are a fun riff on H.P. Lovecraft’s stories: horror lite, Publishers Weekly called them. This story is set in Dunwich, Massachusetts; there is a cephalopod-like creature with tentacles ...more

I got this from the GoodReads giveaway, and it's such a fun story! Robert is beginning his first year at middle school and is already nervous, because he recognizes the bully who tormented him for years. And then strange things happen around school, like disappearances and the science teacher might not be altogether human. What's going on at Lovecraft Middle School? Are there really ghosts and demons? Robert is about to find out. Who knew middle school would be THIS weird?
Skvělý příběh pro mladší, kterým můžu tuto knihu jenom doporučit :). Sice už nejsem nejmladší, ale i tak jsem z knihy unešená a moc se mi příběh líbil. Je to skvělé oddechové čtení :)).

The story follows Robert Arthurt as he starts a new year at Lovecraft Middle School. The only person he knows at his know school is a bully who has been making his life miserable all through school. However at Lovecraft Middle School the bully may be the least of his concerns . . .

I had just finished reading a collection of HP Lovecraft so this book caught me eye. I requested the book on a whim from the library before going on a Thanksgiving trip. It took me an hour and a half or so to read thro

Move over Goosebumps - Lovecraft Middle School has come to town! As a librarian I can't wait to get this book on the shelves - kids are going to love it! Not only will the covers have them scrambling to the shelf, but the story is well written, the characters well developed, the plot moves at a lovely pace, and at the end of the book you're ready for more.

This series opener sets the stage for an epic battle between good and evil fought out between parallel dimensions, and due to an unfortunate s
Robert has just started at the new Lovecraft Middle School due to redistricting over the summer. None of his friends have been transferred with him, but his school bully has. At first it's easy to ignore the odd little things that happen, but eventually things get from a little odd to downright weird. His best friend is a two-headed rat, and he discovers that his science teacher is actually a gargoyle from another dimension masquerading as a human while working to take over the world! It was fun.:)
Wanna continue this series. Poor Robert..I think he'll have lots of stuff coming soon.
Those creepy twins...

P.S. Sad, that other 2 books aren't out here yet..but I'll wait.
This is a very good book for someone 9-25ish. It reminds me of the R.L. Stine books I used to scare myself silly with when I was about that age. Just spooky enough to get your heart racing, but unrealistic enough to make it fun. (I still hate Unsolved Mysteries, especially since they all seemed to be loose in Upstate NY where I live).

As for the Lovecraft aspect, I read the Dunwich Horror...I thought it was funny. This author, on the other hand, has enough talent to make the experiences seem rea
