so, when i am cleaning house, i like to have some sort of police procedural on in the background. i don't know why, i just find them soothing - the shape of the narrative tends to be consistent, and they usually have enough action sequences for me to pace my laundry-folding and book restacking in a productive way.

there is a definite preference-hierarchy to the shows i will watch. law and order (excluding criminal intent) is the preferred choice. ncis and criminal minds are lower, and as i have o...more

It's really hard for me to be swept away by a book in the same way I used to be swept away as a kid. Maybe it's a writer thing. I don't know. I mean, I have this ridiculous internal editor that never shuts up. But something happened as I was reading BETWEEN. I noticed it had a release date of August 2, so I picked it up, and there I stood reading this afternoon, beside my kitchen island, my Coke Zero forgotten and my peanut butter sandwich staling, and before I knew it, my legs were cramping and...more

Liz was perfect in life. She had the looks, the friends and the money to buy popularity and keep it. Beneath the surface though, Liz was more than just a pretty face. Born to a mother plagued by anorexia, Liz learned from an early age that eating equals control, and when her life spun out of control, she controlled her eating habits. On the morning of her 18th birthday, Liz wakes up to see her body floating in the water, but she has no recollection of what's happened. As she wanders the "between...more

Elizabeth "Liz" Vachar was the perfect girl - tall and blonde, "with the body of a game show hostess," and a rich father who gives her all that she ever wanted. She has an equally perfect boyfriend, a circle of (not-so)-equally beautiful friends, and, oh, yes, her step-sister is her best friend. So it comes as a major shock to Liz when she wakes up on the eve of her eighteenth birthday to find out that she's, well, dead .

In the afterlife, Liz finds herself stuck between the realms of the living...more

Thanks to teenreads.com I received a very early sneak peek copy of Jessica Warman's upcoming book Between.

In return I had to fill out a questionnaire with my reaction to the book. I'm not sure if there will be changes made to the book prior to its release later this year. If there are I'm sure they will be minor.

Since I don't want to give out any spoilers I'm just going to say this book is well written and drew me into the story from the first chapter. There is some content that would make me h...more

I really wanted to love this as the beginning was so incredible. I did really enjoy it but given how long it is I really think it could have done with an ending that felt less rushed. I also figured out the plot twists really early on and I hate that as I find it really distracting to feel like you know what's coming! Still, recommended to those who like a supernatural mystery with a teen friendly edge.

Wow. Was this an amazing book. When I read the synopsis I thought it was going to be a typical YA book, but I was completely floored by how amazing this book was. It has everything a YA book needs and more: mystery, romance, strong characters, a hole-less plot and meaning.

My only complaint of this book was there was one part where it was a little boring. Right after you get over the shock of what is happening and right before the mystery starts unraveling. And even then, it isn't THAT boring it...more

On the cover of the book, Gail Giles says "A love story, and a cautionary tale that gallops from its gripping beginning to its crackling conclusion."

I completely agree with Mrs. Giles! Between is a wonderful story. It is different from what I am used to reading but that isn't to say it isn't as good. I simply LOVED the book.

Liz is trying to figure out what happened to her the night that she died. Everyone seems to think it was an accident, that she fell into the water.

Then she sees Alex, they...more

This is an intense book that elicits deep emotions of the heartache kind. It's a story of redemption in the afterlife of a seemingly superficial rich girl, Liz, who wakes up during the night of her 18th birthday to find her now lifeless body floating in the water near her family's boat, where she'd been partying with her friends and step-sister. She's not alone in this weird between state, though, there's another dead boy from her school, Alex, who seems to be some sort of guide for her, althoug...more

When I originally picked this up, I saw the release date and though "Oh noes, I need to read this soon." What I didn't expect was to like it as much as I did. It's no joke, for fans of Before I Die and The Lovely Bones, you're in for a treat. An addicting treat, but a treat nonetheless.

While Between does focus on the subject of love, there really isn't a lot of romance in it. It's about a love a father has for his daughter, the love soulmates share, and the love people have for their friends. Be...more

Ever since reading Where the Truth Lies, Jessica's second novel, last year, I've been dying to read another book by her, so when Between landed on my radar I knew I had to read it. Not only because I was pretty sure I would love it, but also because it had been compared to two of my favorite YA books, Before I Fall and If I Stay. Luckily, it was pretty darn SPECTACULAR to say the least.

It all starts with a jarring noise. However, when Elizabeth (also known as Liz) goes to find out just what's ma...more

Yes I judge a book by its cover. I also love ghost stories. So when I saw the cover, I knew I'd love it. And I did. Elizabeth wakes up to find her dead body floating in the water and has to solve her own murder because she can't remember much of what happened. A slow unravel, page turning story. This main character is similar to the one in Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. Even though the Elizabeth is somewhat shallow and bitchy we learn why, we see her change, and we have empathy.

Definitely worth...more

Between was a rather interesting novel and I enjoyed reading it for the most part. Throughout the novel, the readers are surprised with the information that is revealed in the wake of Liz’s death. I thought that the idea that the characters that were dead, Liz and Alex, had to rediscover what had lead up to their death and relive some of their memories from life beforehand. As the novel progressed, the events and secrets revealed became more predictable; however, I suppose this could have been a...more

There were six on the boat that night – when they woke there were five. Elizabeth pieces together the events of her 18th birthday party and the days before leading her to revelations that will change her forever.

Having read only the jacket, I was surprised the main character was (view spoiler)[ the one that died and that this was a “limbo” story. (hide spoiler)] But I enjoyed it. The story kept pulling me in, the characters had many angles and quirks while also being pretty typical teens, ones y...more

Wow. Just wow. I was captivated by Warman's writing style from the first chapter and she kept my attention all the way to the end. The prose is compulsively readable in an addictive way. I kept reading, wanting to know all about Liz, Josie, Richie and everyone else. Sure, the plot is very similar to Lauren Oliver's Before I Fall, but isn't most YA novels the same? Warman has managed to take a well worn idea and invigorated it with snappy, suspenseful writing.

The novel does have its downfalls tho...more

As soon as I picked up the book, I couldn't put it down. It was very suspenseful and had my attention the entire time. Before Liz died, she was a total snob to everyone she met, and I can without a doubt say she seriously got on my nerves some times. Although, the difference between Liz's old behavior and the way she was at the end of the book was brought through the story very well. They showed her change of heart very well. Several parts of the book made me cry, because of the style of the aut...more

This book was a such a gripping one, I really enjoyed reading it. I liked the way the story started off, with Liz staring at her own body. I think from then on, I was already hooked.
This story is about discovering oneself with pain, hurt, love and well, everything in between. I liked the way Liz was a popular girl but only had one boyfriend in her entire life. I liked the bleak, bittersweet romance between Liz and Richie - about the depth of their love and affection towards eachother, but yet,...more

Elizabeth Valchar has it all: looks, popularity, a boyfriend who loves her, a best friend who is also her step-sister. On the night of her eighteenth birthday, Liz wakes up to a new reality: she’s dead. That’s not a spoiler, by the way – we find know this by page 6.

Jessica Warman’s YA novel Between is a curious hybrid. It’s part mystery (I really found myself flipping those pages to see what had happened to Liz), part social commentary, part ghost story and part teen drama.

When Liz ‘wakes up’ an...more

The magic abou this book is that it constantly manages to get more and more interesting as the story progreses. From the blurb you dont learn much, which is why when you find out about Liz's death it is such a shock. Jessica Warman manages to build her characters up but once you feel like you know them they have some secret personality trait, or anyother side to them which makes you think how no one is ever black and white good or bad. Even the nicest people have flaws and even what Alex Berg de...more

Oh no not again. WHY does this always happen to me? i swear the bookstore is going to have a fit if i return another novel. Im sorry but this novel was not good at all. the concept is good, but i just didnt like the story. i spent WAY to much time skim reading & asking my self when i'd finally finish. the only reason i kept reading was because i kinda wanted to know what happened. But this was a bad mystery unfortunatly.

In Jessica Warman's Between, Elizabeth Valchar has everything. She is gorgeous, athletic, and smart. She has a loving family, the best of friends, and the perfect boyfriend. She celebrates her eighteenth birthday by inviting her closest friends to spend the night on her family's expensive yacht.

A loud thumping noise wakes her up in the middle of the night. She tiptoes across the boat to see what is causing all the ruckus. She leans over the boat and almost screams when she sees a body caught in...more

Elizabeth has it all. The looks; the boyfriend; the best friend; the friends; the family. But beneath the surface Elizabeth's life isn't as picturesque. Liz's mother battled Anorexia, and Liz watched as her mother slowly faded away until the day she died, but not until Liz's mother handed down the struggles that come hand-in-hand with the ED. And her best friend's mother marries her father only months after her mother passes away.

Despite at first HATING the main character (she's pretty, vain, self-centred - everything the 'popular' crowd were at school and not characteristics I would warm to in a protagonist) I really loved this book. The premise I guess isn't too unusual - I read this directly after Rosamund Lupton's 'afterwards' which deals with a very similar issue in a less YA way - but it was really well done, using flashbacks instead of simply a linear narrative to tell the story and explain what happened. The book...more

Very boring. I did finish the book, but from the middle onwards I skimmed.

Alex is extremely annoying. He thinks he's God. Always telling Liz off. Making out as if he's never done anything bad in his life.

At first, Liz is just a popular bitch. She's not a bad person, yet Alex treats her as if she's the worst person alive. Towards the end, it's clear that she is a bad person, far beyond the social ranking of high school. Not because she picked on people, or never stopped evident bullying, or sai...more

Jessica Warman is the author of Breathless, which received three starred reviews and was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and Where the Truth Lies. The idea for Between came from an incident in her childhood, when a local boy went missing after a party on a yacht (he was eventually found, alive).
