Phantom (Dark Musicals #1)

Laura DeLuca (Goodreads Author)
The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the pla...more

I received a copy of Phantom by Laura DeLuca in exchange for an honest review. First off I have to say that I have fallen in love with Laura's books. I started my journey with her with Destiny and Destiny Unveiled they were absolutely fabulous. Her flow through her books are seamless and effortless it is so hard to put them down she captures your attention on page 1. Her covers on the books are spectacular and engaging. She builds each of her characters in a...more

The 411 by Maria:
First, don't be thrown off by the cover. The 3 characters are very Sims like and there is more to this book than this cover depicts. It is much deeper and you will find yourself completely engrossed in this modern day version of Phantom!
This is my third Laura DeLuca book and what I can tell you about Laura is that you can tell that she really loves creating her characters. Each character in Phantom is important to the story and all very well rounded. I wonder if she has a back...more

I loved this book. I'm in my late thirties and daydreaming about a high school boy. If you've read "Phantom", you won't find that odd. If you haven't, you should read it before you label me as anything other than normal. When I started reading this book, I instantly connected with Rebecca. She is your typical girl next door. She imagines herself with the most popular boy in school and thinks he'll never notice her. She lands the lead role in the school play and that changes. She develops a relat...more
I was very excited to read this book based on the fact that it is based off of one of my favorite musicals, Phantom of the Opera. In a way, this book is sort of a retelling of both the book and the musical in a high school setting. What makes it different from a straight retelling is that the characters in the book are actually putting on a high school version of the musical so there are really two retellings going on at the same time, which I loved.

Loved this book! I had seen the Phantom of the Opera way back when I was a little kid - I didn't know much of what was going on at the time, but after reading this book, I think I may want to read the actual book!

This book is in a word fantastic. I was hooked from the very first chapter. I laughed. I cried. I laughed some more and, you guessed it, cried a little more as well. The author managed to tell a brilliant story perfectly. As you read this story, you cared about each and every character equally, followed their every move, and by the end you really had no idea where how it would all end but when it did you it did it perfectly. I have never read a story that wrapped up so well!

This book is amazing! Being a huge fan of Phantom of the Opera, I was quickly drawn into the world of this modern day version (as well as listening to the soundtrack the entire time I read it). The characters are well developed and are exact replicas of the ghosts of the original, only with some twists. All the use of the quotes from the play and the book were brilliant and very well thought out. All in all I loved it and could hardly put it down.

This is a very daring subject for any writer to touch. the one thing you might notice is that it is so very well researched and laid out. the detail and the knowledge of the story looks like a life long obsession full of love of and understanding of the subject and it has been turned into a new, more contemporary story. it leads me to believe we are reading a subject that is very close to the heart of the author. Who could blame her for that, we are talking about the Phantom of the Opera.

At first glance, you may think this is just another retelling of The Phantom of the Opera but it is oh, so much more. Held at a High School and revolving around strange happenings involving members of the cast, this 21st Century version has a flavor all it's own.

I've only ever seen 'The Phantom of the Opera' once on DVD but I did enjoy it and I like the idea of the storyline, and the music is beautiful. I have had the soundtrack on my ipod for years and know a lot of the songs. My best friend has seen it in theaters all round the world and it's her all time favourite so I thought I would give this a go and see if it was worth recommending to her.

Who was that shape in the shadows? Whose is the face in the mask? - The Phantom of the Opera, the Musical (1986)
the line between art and life blurs and evolves into something threatening and violent for a group of teenagers involved in Phantom, a high school play. something or someone is lurking in the shadows and Rebecca Hope's life is put in terrible danger as she performs the role of Christine Daae.

When I first saw this advertised as a modern day Phantom, I thought it was going to be another tired rendition of Erik and Christine, with the same kind of ending they all have. I was wrong. This story is fresh and exciting. The characters aren't modern day versions of Erik and Christine. They are just playing those roles in their school play and their own life starts to mirror some of the events. Its ties in both the Phantom of the Opera musical and the classic novel, but its completely its own...more
Oh my... wow! I don't know where to start, but first I have to write that I Seriously loved this story! It really is set in high school, and a lot of seniors play some major parts in the upcoming school production of Phantom, including the ever reserved, Rebecca Hope. She has a stunning voice though, and two different, and I mean different types of guys see that. Now they want her attention, as she is the star; she gets to play Christine! The two other guys include Goth dude: 'Lord' Justyn and R...more
Of all the fictional novels I have ever read-this was by far the best one! I wish there were stories like this when I was a teenager.
I could relate to so many of the different characters in this story and saw so many personality traits of myself in many of them. Even the ending sent chills down my spine as I went through a difficult situation and could relate so much to what was revealed when the murderer was discovered.

The Phantom of the Opera is hands down not only one of my absolute favorite books but also movie (Especially since Gerard Butler plays Phantom) and plays. But I admit that reading the book or watching the movie fills me with a sadness and hollows out a place in my heart. Why must the phantom forever be shunned by Christine? Why can't in one reproduction or version can't Christine run away with the Phantom? It is a longing that has often plagued me as I wipe away the tears after she once again sp...more

I love The Phantom of the Opera, but not as much as the heroine of our story, Rebecca, does. Rebecca has seen the play a ton of times, read the book countless more times, and seen every single movie version ever made. When her school’s drama department decides to do Phantom of the Opera, Rebecca knows that she has to be part of it – and spurred on by the encouragement of her besties Carmen and Deb she tries out. To her surprise she wins the lead role of Christine. This immediately makes her the...more
I will be quick to admit I am only familiar with Phantom of the Opera through the musical and the movies not through the book so I can't attest to this book according to the actual book. But I must say I am impressed. Ms. DeLuca has managed to weave a story that parallels a story without becoming too something that would make the story over-the-top or just too much like the original. Ms. DeLuca makes the story work with the current day and time and fit in the young adult genre quite well.

Right before I sat down to read this book, I watched Phantom of the Opera for the first time ever! I liked the movie but I was kind of bummed she didn't end up with the Phantom. I have to say that I liked the book by Laura DeLuca even more than the movie! It was super creepy. I would not want to go to their high school, that's for sure. But fans of the movie phantom of the opera are sure to love this book!

Phantom is the tale of high school wall flower Rebecca, who throughout her entire highschool history, had been determined to stay on the side lines, not wishing to bring any attention to herself. Now, in her senior year, she appears to have actually succeeded in this goal, until the school drama department decides to put on The Phantom of the Opera.

There are many elements of Laura DeLuca’s Phantom that I absolutely love: the way Justyn and Rebecca adore The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux; the relationship between Justyn and his mother, for it shows a great example of how real a witchy family interacts; and more than anything, I’m still entranced by Justyn. I did a lot of nodding when he was discussing stereotypes and conventionality with Rebecca, especially when he said,
“I’m used to being the outcast. It comes with the territory.”

Let me begin by saying that I am a huge Phantom of the Opera fan, that being said it's not a stretch that I would choose to read a story that revolves around the main characters putting on a performance of Phantom as their senior play. BTW I think this was a great notion, even if the average high school would probably never have enough talent to pull something like that off.
What I loved ...Laura Deluca made it seem believable. The cast was filled with characters who were we...more

A very entertaining, shocking, thrilling and exciting YA read that brings us a different sort of take on the Phantom of the Opera (a long time favorite musical of mine by the way). Any fans out there that enjoyed the story of the Phantom, or just enjoy the genre itself will enjoy their time spent with this read :)

Me loving "Phantom of the Opera" as much as Becca I knew I would love her right off, but it wasn't her that kept me interested in the book it was Tom and Lord Justyn who did with their banter back and forth and whose ego is bigger. "I'm sorry, Tom. I forgot a moment that you have a limited vocabulary. I'll make an effort to use only one-syllable words when you're around. What I was trying to saw was - maybe Becca's not interested in you." Well maybe it was more Lord Justyn who kept me entertaine...more
I have never read The Phantom Of The Opera, many of my friends said it was good, but I never gave it the chance. After reading this book, I am definitely going to read The Phantom of The Opera. I cannot begin to describe this book, it's a mix between horribly beautiful and magically creative.

I was hooked on this book from the start. I love books that can fit into two genres. Love and Mystery. I love waiting on things to unfold. I also really enjoyed the love triangle with Rebecca, Justyn, and Tom. Justyn and Tom could not be anymore different. I remember briefly studying Phantom of the Opera in highschool. The magic behind the music and story was enticing. Phantom is a novel that shares the same undying love and magic.
The highschool drama club has decided to take on a huge task and perform the magical Phantom of the Opera. Rebecca has known this play since she was young so she finds herself trying out for the part of Christine. Her long time crush is trying out for a leading role as well. When along comes mysterious Justyn, who steals...more

Laura "Luna" DeLuca lives at the beautiful Jersey shore with her husband and three children. She has been writing stories for as long as she can remember. Old high school friends would tell you she was always scratching in her notebook instead of paying attention in class and the children she used to babysit for always loved to hear her scary stories at bedtime.
