Sequel to "Frost".

Lia Weaver went against everything she’d ever known when she risked her life to help a Farther fugitive named Gabe escape from the Aeralian soldiers, and her life changed forever. And the Frost changed, too—the Farthers have taken over her village, a new group of vigilantes calling themselves the Blackcoats are making plans to overthrow the Farther occupi...more

3.5 stars - I liked this book, but I kind of feel like Ellison kind of went off track with it.

Don't get me wrong. I still enjoyed the story, and I liked that the book answered some of my questions about who the Thorns were and where they came from. But I felt Ellison spent so much time creating a storyline for the Blackcoats instead of focusing on developing the one about the Thorns. And I don't learn any more about the Watchers, the Forgotten Ones or Echo except for chasing around the mysteriou...more

I remember only a few months ago I was raving about this book Frost. Distinctly memorable setting, tough yet conflicted heroine, excellent pacing all around, I said. After such a promising start, I had high hopes for the sequel, but although Thorns does everything a sequel is supposed to do, it unfortunately still comes up short.

I just didn’t feel the connection to Lia like I did last time. Then, I saw a tough character who put her family first, always, but also wanted to do the right thing. I l...more

A beautifully written and engaging story

It's three o'clock in the morning, and i've just finished this amazing book ....and i'm speechless, because everything that i wanted Frost to be, this one was!

The writing...once again i have to mention it : _It was freaking perfect, the descriptions were spot on, like what had happened with the first book!

I'm not only reading the words, i'm there, feeling the snow crunching beneath my feet. I'm there running amongst the forest....and i'm there watching the...more

"Thorns" is another mezmerizing read in the Frost Chronicles. Altough Lia has aided Gave in his escape from Frost age us mourning his absence. Unfortunately her feeling are put on the backburner when a regiment of Farther soldiers enter the village and begin taking over the governing of the town. The mayor pretends to be in control; but, he is just their puppet.

Lia is approached by a group of youth from town calling themselves the blackcoats. They are rebels against the Farther's presence and wa...more

The Frost Chronicles are such an indie gem! Stories like these are the reason I love indie books!

I love the world of The Frost. The hardy inhabitants who stubbornly survive in the face of constant hardship. And things have only gotten harder for the Frost dwellers, with the Farther occupation of their town.

I fell in love with Lia in Frost and I still loved her in Thorns. She is so strong and puts her family above all else, which is something I admire a lot. But Lia isn't perfect. She is fiercely...more

**Originally posted at Melissa's Bookshelf as a mini-review, along with mini-reviews of the first, third, and fourth books in the series.

Perhaps the best part about having an eReader is being able to immediately download the next book in a series… (Well, assuming it’s been published, haha.) I loved that I didn’t have to wait after finishing Frost to begin Thorns. For me, Thorns and the third book, Weavers, are my favorites in the series so far. Thorns was fast-paced and I liked the direction Ell...more

Oh my goodness! I am just loving this series. The story is becoming even more intriguing and you learn more about the characters and the world around them. When I first began this series I was picturing a world where the Frost virtually separated the Frost people from the outside world. There is so much more involved and the world is becoming bigger and bigger. As the main character Lia learns mroe about the world she was born in the more we as readers learn. With the ever growing presence of th...more

What did I think?
I LOVED IT!

When I was finished with the first book, Frost.. I was like.. well.. i need the second book NOW!
I started to read Thorns and thought that it couldn't possibly be as good as the first one.. no way..
Well guess what?
It's even better!! And if you really really hate cliff-hangers.. DON'T read this book until the third book has come out and you have it beside you.. because well.. it's gonna be hard to think about ANYTHING until you have the third book in your arms!

It's a go...more

Book 3 needs to show up like now! Usually in most YA literature that I read, the sequels don't really live up to my expectations, but Thorns is one of the rare few that did!

The end of Frost was a HUGE cliffhanger that made me so anxious to get into Thorns, and the end of Thorns was exactly the same! So many plot twists showed up in this book that I never would've suspected! We get to learn more about Lia's parents and the Thorns, and about Adam Brewer and the other supporting characters like Leo...more

I don't actually know what to think about this book. Pretty good. But it's a bit boring unlike the first one, Frost. BUT, I do admit that I freakin' like Adam. I liked him from the start of this series. I knew or maybe I hoped that in the end they'll be together. I don't like Gabe that much, actually. And I am glad that it's not insta-love, for a change.

And I did suspect something about THAT girl. And... and... uh, one thing I don't like in the book is that some of the characters are too stubbor...more

Lia's world in the Frost has changed with the coming of the Farthers. They are ruthless rulers as they take over the village. There are those who wish to fight against the injustices being dealt to them. Lia learns of both the Blackcoats and the Thorns, but which shall she join? And will her family be able to survive?

Still longing for Gabe, who is gone forever, Lia begins working with Adam Brewer. Another love triangle, but at least both guys are not there fighting over her!

I like this world tha...more

"But if he expected me to shatter like fine china, he was mistaken I was carved from the Frost. I was a Weaver's daughter. I was ice and wood and frozen rain"

We pick up Lia Weaver's story two months after she discovers the mystery of the Thorns and she sends the Farther boy Gabe into a portal where he will be safe. Or so we think. Up to now we actually don't know where these portals go and where the people are. This felt more like an in-between book. Filling up some details and time before somet...more

Very quick read. Not as good as book 1 mainly because there are too many things happening in my eyes. Perhaps the books should have been bigger.
After reading this book I picked up book 3 and soon realized by the pacing, that this could never be the last book of the series.
So I checked and bingo, book 4 is coming out spring 2013. That was when I decided to pick something else to read

I don't mind series but no more than 3 books. This is just to earn more money. Such small books so although there i...more

I feel like this story is building up to so much intrigue and plot changers, I am enjoying it very much. I hope that as the plot and sub-plots come together that we won't be left hanging or given quick solutions. I have really enjoyed the slow building romance(s). I do wish there was more interaction and time spent on the relationships that Lia has with her siblings, they continue to be her reason for living but we don't get a chance to see that or be apart of it. You can argue that they are foc...more

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was excited to learn there would more. I jumped at the opportunity to review Thorns when it was presented to me. For lack of better way to put it, this installment had a distinctive middle book feel to it.

Lia spends a lot of this book pining for Gabe, never mind that fact that he crossed over into another world with no chance of coming back. I get that she really liked him (maybe even loved him), but it this cold world she lives in you would t...more

Thorns, book #2 of The Frost Chronicles, completely exceeded my expectations. The plot was captivating; the characters, intriguing, and the unexpected twists have me wanting the next book now.

Lia Weaver really stepped into her character in Thorns. In the first book, I just couldn’t connect to her, but that all changed with this installment. Her devotion to her siblings mixed her determined and sometimes, stubborn personality pulled me in.

Honestly, trying to get Adam to talk at length about anyth...more

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn't so sure anymore. These days, things seemed just as dangerous no matter which side of the village walls you lived on.

This was a great follow up to Frost. Kate has a wonderful elegant writing style that continues to impress me. This is the third book of hers that I have read and she doesn't disappoint.

I don't want to get into the plot to much for fear of spoilers but this one had more action than the fir...more

My Review:
It's so very wonderful when the next book in a series is even better than the first! Thorns has all that makes Frost (book 1) great but with more suspense, more danger and more unexpected twists at every turn; Ellison's characters will surprise you, delight (or maybe terrify) you and leave you hungry for more!!!

As the consequences from events of book 1 progress, Thorns develops fully into the dystopian genre; giving us readers that breat...more

I really enjoyed this book as well as I did the first.... they were quick and held my attention. I even noticed I think more about this series when finished reading. I actually recently finished two books from another series that I thought was ok and while reading this one had to really think to recall what the other was. Proves that im a fan of this one. :) hope the 3rd does justice to the triangle its led up to. Can't wait to find out!

If possible, I loved Thorns more than Frost. This sequel really impressed me and I am completely loving the new relationship between Lia Weaver and Adam Brewer, a boy that we didn't see much of in the first book. The character development in this book draws us more into the complexities of the families and townsfolk that we just saw brief glimpses of before... All in all, and excellent sequel and this book left me wanting to pick up Weavers, the third book in the Frost series, right away... So I...more

Uh okay....wasn't expecting that!

I was just sort of meandering my way through the early parts of this story--enjoying it--but definitely not rushing to finish it. There was no heat from a blazing fire behind me to push me on...until about 75%. Then...WOOSH! FIRE!

Lots of new turns and twists in this one! I have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE what book 3 is going to reveal or where on earth it's going to go OR who the heck Lia is going to love! My hate for love triangles is at an all-time high, yet I cannot...more

Alright well, I managed to finish Thorns in a matter of hours. And I'm REALLY glad that the third book is out already so I don't have to wait to find out what happens next!

I loved all the new information that came forth in this one. We learn more about certain characters, about newer characters, and about events and mechanisms. I don't really have much to say on this one only because I want to start reading the third one right away, so suffice to say that this book succeeded in building up the s...more

I honestly really enjoy this series. I think Lia is a strong heroine with believable ideas and actions and overall, she has an enjoyable story worth following. There were elements of the story I didn't complete enjo, for example Lia's siblings are beyond annoying. Ivy, her younger sister, was completely annoying and I don't look forward to reading more about her in the next book. I realize some of the elements in the book are designed to frustrate and incite anger but it was a little too much. I...more

A sequel that doesn't disappoint. Usually in a love triangle I have someone I'm rooting for...but I'm really torn between Adam and Gabe! I'll be anxious for the third book to see what happens with the new plot developments started in this book.

So much tension! The Farther occupation is pulling a dangerous noose tighter and tighter around the village. By the end of the book they've pretty much shut down the place and threatened anyone who disobey's in any way with death/execution. Things aren't any easy at home for Lia as Jonn feels useless and Ivy continues with her disobedience, something that could end up getting her in serious trouble.

Then you have Thorns and now the Blackcoats stirring up a rebellion. It's no wonder Lia is frustra...more

Nice continuation of the first book, though I didn't like it quite as much. Tended to be a little slower paced. But laying a good foundation for the obligatory love triangle. Now on to book three!

After devouring Frost, I immediately got Thorns. These first two books in the Frost Series focus on a strong female character and her struggle to live and protect her family. Very well-written.

I've been making up stories since I was five years old, and now I'm thrilled to be able to do it as a full-time job. I have an obsession with dark fantasy, dystopian futures, and Pride and Prejudice-style love stories full of witty banter and sizzling, unspoken feelings. When I'm not writing, I'm creating digital art, reading funny blogs, or watching my favorite shows (which include TVD and BSG)....more
