I love the message this story holds in teaching young children to be true to themselves. You do not need to lather yourself with material possessions or make-up to be beautiful. We are all beautiful, you only have to look within yourself. As a Mother of 3 daughters this is something I have strive to instill in my daughters. Of course you are only as beautiful as you see yourself and positive reinforcement is important from those closest to you.

Poppy the Proud is another bird book by Emlyn Chand that is designed to help teach children some lesson in a fun way. This particular story is about being too prideful. Poppy is a peacock. We mostly associate such words as regal, proud, elegant, and beautiful to peacocks because of their unique feathers, bright colors, and strut. Emlyn has used the image of a peacock to portray what happens when you are too proud and "expect" certain things to happen. Poppy was always adored and other animals in...more
I thought this book was really cute, I was given the Kindle e-book and the pictures came through so colorful on my Kindle Fire, which all the children enjoyed. The story isn’t long so it’s perfect for those children with short attention spans or if you need to occupy some time such as a doctor appointment or a car ride. Usually when I think of self esteem, I think of how the world wants to build up children to the point where the world revolves around them, but the story didn’t play that up – it...more
Poppy is a beautiful peacock and is very pampered. His audience of fans follow him around complimenting him on his beauty. They bring gifts him gifts. He has come to expect all this attention until one day no one seemed to even notice him.
Everyone was staring at a snow white peacock. Snow White was so graceful. What was so attractive about a white peacock when he had so many colors on him to admire?

Poppy is a peacock with an ego problem. He is the most beautiful in the park and it's gotten to his head. When a beautiful white peacock chick named Snow arrives in the park one day, Poppy is eclipsed. Why does everyone love this new kid? How can Poppy get back the admiration he deserves?

Poppy the Peacock made my day, and it's much better than the twitter-feather-flapping going on in Brandon Manitoba right now :P.

I think we need more merrily chasing after things in my home town. That's why I'm recommending everyone, not just kids go out and buy this book and read it multiple times...more
"To all the lovely children who chase merrily after geese, imitate ducks' quack-quacking, and throw bread crumbs to swans. The birds love you, too. And they want to tell you their stories." - page 1

Another great "bird brain" book from Emlyn Chand. The book's theme will resonate with children who struggle with self-esteem (and which child does not from time to time?). Children will be reminded that true beauty is not outward but what is inside. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is clear and sweet. Parents can feel good sharing the story with their children, and early readers will find this story quite readable.

Poppy the Proud is the first book I have ever read by the author, but I have been around birds all my life. I am very familiar with peafowl since my grandfather had a a couple. Everyone can relate to our feathered friend when we have made made fools of ourselves or have seen other do it for the sake of pride.
The reader could almost learn a second lesson: to laugh with others when they are laughing at you.
Poppy could be a wonderful comedian. Making people smile is also a mark of greatness!

Poppy was a very proud peacock and all he wanted was to have all eyes on him. But one day, a birth of an all-white peacock named Snow ended his royal living. Poppy then spent his time trying to fit in and reclaim his crown as the fairest-of-them-all.
This is a tale revealing what it is that makes each and everyone of us special. It also tells how jealousy and greed can lead us to our pit falls. More than a story of a bird, Poppy the Proud is indeed a reminder to all living creatures to be humbled...more

Ooh, I love that cover. A peacock as the main character, just wow. Like a little kid yearning to start reading a book with beautiful pictures, I opened the book and got ready for my bed time reading.
Hidden in the simple words of this story is a wonderful moral that is so easily taught to the children by reading this out. Not only will they love the pictures and laugh at Poppy the peacock's theatrics but also learn an important lesson for life.
I really loved this story and enjoyed it thoroughly....more

As the other books in the series, Poppy the Proud offers a life lesson in the form of a enjoyable story. As the prettiest peacock in the garden, Poppy is used to having all of the attention of the other animals. When another bird arrives and becomes the center of everyone’s focus Poppy becomes jealous.
In an effort to regain the happiness he believes he lost, Poppy embarks on various endeavors that fail and make him look foolish. It isn’t until he makes a new friend and learns the true meaning of...more

Poppy was a very proud peacock who enjoyed being the centre of attention. When the people visiting the park paid more attention to Snow, a new all white peacock instead of him, he tried his hardest to become more noticeable by doing all kinds of silly things.
This is the third book in the ‘bird brain’ series and is brightly illustrated with vocabulary that would suit all young children, and make an ideal bedtime read. The message in the story is that beauty comes from within and nicely includes a...more
