This review is for books 4-7 (The Siege, The Shattering, The Burning, and The Hatchling)

Ye gods, I can't believe I had forgotten about this series. Guardians of Ga'Hoole is brilliant.

For one, the world-building is fantastic. There's nothing vague about it, it's interesting and intricate and I just love it.

Also, I absolutely adore the characters...well, most of them. I hate Nyra with the fire of a thousand suns, and all the other Pure Ones are just kinda meh. But I love Soren, Gylfie, Twilight,

I didn't think i would like this book as much when i realized that it was all from the standpoint of Nyroc son of evil Kludd and Nyra, rather than Soren and the owls of Ga'hoole. But it was soooooo good. And by the end you love Nyroc just as much as Soren. Eagerly starting the next book, which continues his story.

You’re a young barn owl. You have just found out that all your life you’ve been lied to. How would you feel? Well, this is what Nyroc, the main character in Kathryn Lasky’s The Hatchling, is going through.
The Pure Ones, a group of owls that believes only Barn Owls (most “pure”), Masked Owls and Grass Owls (“pure”), and Sooty Owls (slightly “pure”) are “pure”, as they call it, is hosting the Marking Ceremony (the cremation of a dead owls remains) for their fallen leader, Kludd, a Barn Owl, lik

The Hatchling is the seventh book of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, in which a new era has begun. This is the first book in the series that has a central character besides Soren. The central character is the hatchling, Nyroc, who is the son of the evil Kludd and the equally evil Nyra.
As the story begun I thought I knew what to expect. Now that Metal Beak is dead, a new villain must rise up and lead the Pure Ones against the Guardians to continue the epic struggle between good and evil. I wa

This series is supposedly for young adults but I'm enjoying them, regardless of how old I am. The owls are fascinating and, of course, their behavior is similar to all different types of people - in essence the old good vs. evil battle of legends. If you've read Harry Potter or Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series and enjoyed them, this is another good series to read. There are 15 books in the series but they aren't as massive as the HP books so they're easy to read one here and there. For a good ...more

Recommends it for: everyone and anyone!
It was good book and I think that it does a good job of introducing Nyroc to the story.

Beneath a shadowed moon in a cloud-streaked sky, the sacred orb splits and a hatching is born: It is Nyroc, son of Kludd, fallen leader of the Pure Ones, and his evil mate, Nyra. Born from evil, trained to evil, Nyroc is destined to fulfill his father's terrible plan, the oppression of all owldom under the vicious talons of the Pure Ones.

But doubt grows in Nyroc's heart, fed by strange forbidden legends of a great tree far away where noble owls live in peace. And a light dawns in Nyroc's gizzard

This one is really good. I think Nyroc (Coryn) touches on the human nature debate. Sorta like Kludd. Nyroc was born into a family of pure evil. He was raised to be malicious and cruel. That's all he ever knew. But inside him he had a pure heart that he refused to let be blackened by the Pure Ones. He had Ga' perhaps? He found great interest and enlightenment in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole.

i think this is the best Guardians of Gahoole book written so far.
its even better then book 1!

the story so far:
The pure ones were still suffering from defeat by the guardians of gahoole.but there luck changes when Nyroc, the son of Nyra and kludd is born.He is raised to be the supreme evil ruler of the pure ones. but when he realizes how evil the pure ones (and his own mother ) are, he and his friend (Phillips) tried to escape (and failed). This book is actually about the antagonist in the gaurdians of gahoole series. The evil queen Nyra has a son who she tries to raise evil but has a change of heart when he meets the gaurdians. I myself really loved this book. i got to see a different perspective on the series instead of getting the view point of the protagonist. There was a lot of information that ai never got to experience until reading this single book. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has not read this book in the ser ...more

POOR DUSTYTUFT WHY? WHY? WHY?

There is a big change in the series at this point. Not only is this book primarily about a new character, Nyroc, son of the hated Kludd and Nyra, but the style of the story changes from adventure to more of a mystical fantasy quest. There are visions and dreams, magical talents and potential fulfillment of prophesy. But there is still the same wonderful storytelling with layers of subtle (and not so subtle) lessons that kids can learn a lot from. Nyra tries to teach her son to hate and he tries ...more

As of The Hatchling, the Ga'Hoole story shifts focus. Soren and his friends step down from their main character positions for the next two books, and Soren's nephew Nyroc takes over.

Nyroc is the second egg of Kludd and Nyra (the other broke before hatching), born during an eclipse and so destined to be either Nyra Junior or the super special awesome second coming of Jesus Hoole. As he's the new protagonist, I'm sure we can all tell which he's going to be.

Beyond the predictability, however, this

This book begins the second "cycle" in the owl-centric Ga'hoole series. Soren & co. are all grown up, his evil brother and the Tytonic Order of Pure Ones defeated. Things should be looking up. Alas, the Pure Ones have a plan B, the titular hatchling who is Soren's nephew by Nyra, the Pure Ones' matriarch. Far away, in the barren canyons of what was once St. Aggie's, she is raising her hatchling to be the perfect soldier and to hate his uncle. But Nyroc the hatchling has a dangerous gift, one ...more

Nyroc just wants to be the perfect son and the best Pure One that he can be. But when he finds out the truth about the Pure Ones brutality and cruelty, he runs away from his mother Nyra, the Mate of Klud. So as he and his best friend Philip fly away they find that they are being followed. Then they encounter the shredder winds and are stuck between a decision, face punishment or a slim chance of escape. The Hatchling is a story about friendship, murder and selflessness.

I loved it so much, and I recommend it to anyone really, unless they haven't read the beginning of the series yet.
I give this book a 93%, very high on my scale! 5 shiny stars!

This was, by far, the weakest of the books thus far in the series. I have a strong suspicion that this book and the one that follows it should have been one book, not two separate ones. The writing was good, but the story felt unnecessarily drawn out. I haven't read the next book yet so I'm not sure, but if I'm right about the next book, then honestly, my son and I would have much preferred one longer book that moved along than even one dragged out story like this. It still deserved three stars ...more

A beginning of a new era, with war against the Pure Ones...again. Nothing will stop the evil barn owl Nyra - not even the death of her own husband, for there is hope in Nyroc, born on a lunar eclipse, like Nyra. All owls born on a lunar eclipse are said to be extremely evil, like Nyra, or extremely good - which will Nyroc be? Both paths are hard...

The Hatchling is the seventh book in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series by Kathryn Lasky. Unlike the other books in the searies Soren is only mentiond but the book never fokases on Soren as a main character because in this book nether Soren or any one of the great tree are main characters (althow the book does fokus on Otulissa for about 2-3 chapters). Insted the main charactor is Nyroc son of Kludd and Nyra leaders of the pure ones. The story follows Nyroc as he trys to eskape the Pure ones and fi ...more

01/11: Still loving this series on audio. In this one, Nyroc, Nyra & Kludd's chick makes his way in the world. Nyroc is loyal to his mother and the Pure Ones, but he's too good for them. He struggles with issues of "free will" and "truth." He also befriends his buddy, the Sooty Owl, "Dustytuff," or rather "Phillip." When Nyroc looks into fire and sees the awful truth about his mother and the Pure Ones, he flees with Phillip. Alas, they are captured. Nyra kills Phillip and Nyroc escapes. He w ...more

Even though I missed Soren and the Band, the newly introduced Nyroc and his story solidly stood on their own two feet, at least in this installment. I'm excited to learn where Nyroc's destiny leads him, but I do hope that we'll get to see Soren and his friends again. It looks like, from the old characters, Otulissa will be most prominent in Nyroc's life so far, and she has never been my favorite. But she's definitely grown on me. I also loved learning more about the legends of Hoole, and I hope ...more

An excellent book!!!! I love this series so much, it's amazing and I'm an adult!
I was waiting for a book to be more about Nyroc and here it is! The poor guy. What terrible parents he was unfortunately born to. I was a tad disappointed to not have Soren in the book at all except when mentioned. I hope that Soren comes back into the picture again along with the rest of the band. I want Soren and Nyroc to live happily together in the Great Tree or somewhere. They all deserve a happy family.

I've really enjoyed this series, but this book brought so much more emotion into everything. I actually cried once or twice when reading this. I was so enthralled with the interesting story line...yes, it's less about the owls we've come to know, and more about a new character (Nyroc) and I didn't think I'd like him very much...but he is such an admirable and upstanding character and I feel so bad for him.
