When I started reading this, I didn't have much hope for it, I regretted buying it almost immediately after I came home and vowed never to buy books I haven't heard about again.

I was pleasantly surprised when I was about a quarter of the way through, and I realized that I couldn't put it down. I read ROSEBUSH by Michelle Jaffe about a year ago and fell in love with this author. The Aha! moment in that book really got me, so I knew I needed to read whatever she came up with next. So when I heard of GHOST FLOWER it immediately was added to my TBR! And it did not disappoint.

I loved Eve. Even if what she was doing was a little... despicable. I love a girl with secrets and boy does she have some. But she is so much more than her dark past. She's funny, and smart. She adapts remarkably well to her new environments. And she has that stubbornness that is so needed in a good mystery book.

The Family. Aurora's family is this strange organism all on its own. They all live next to each other -- on a sort of compound-like stretch of land, each in their own fabulous mansion. We're talking courtyards and secret passage ways. They have so much money -- more than is even moral. But the most fascinating thing about them is the way they protect one another. Very Sopranos-ish. An attack on any one member of the family is an attack on the Family.

At the head of the family is Aurora's grandmother. I thought that she was the most interesting character. She's basically the queen of the family and everything goes through her. She makes all the financial decisions, she even tells Aurora/Eve where she is and isn't allowed to go. But underneath that hardened exterior is an old woman trying desperately to hold it all together. She is slowly being taken over by dementia, and it was really, really sad to watch.

Michelle Jaffe has a real gift with words. From the first page I was sucked in. It was only a description of someone waking up but it was just so beautiful. I had to have more. Right now.

The only downfall of this novel was the Aha! moment. It's not that I saw it coming (though if you read some reviews, there are readers who said it was glaringly obvious.) It was just confusing to me, and I had to reread it over again to figure out what the heck just happened. So I think something was taken away from it and had I paid attention the first time around, it would have been better.

I definitely recommend this read. Anyone who likes mysteries, and books with a weird darkness to them. It was one part mystery, one part ghost story, and one part coming-of-age novel. I loved it.(less)

During the next few weeks Bain and Bridgette tell Eve everything she needs to know about their cousin Aurora. Aurora disappeared three years ago but is supposed to come into a huge inheritance on her 18th birthday, which is only a few months away. The plan is to have Eve convince The Family that she is the missing Aurora returned home until she receives her money. After she passes the money on to the two siblings they will give her the promised share and she, and therefore Aurora, can disappear again.
In principle the plan is simple enough, but Eve/Aurora soon discovers that in practice it is a lot more complicated. It soon becomes clear that Bain and Bridgette didn’t give her all the information about Aurora she needs. They also didn’t tell her that on the night Aurora disappeared Liza, Aurora’s best friend, died. Although the death has been ruled a suicide, the police still have questions about what exactly happened; questions they would like the newly returned Aurora to answer. While feigning amnesia helps Eve/Aurora to cover most holes in her story, she does get curious about what exactly is going on herself. And when she starts receiving messages from what appears to be Liza’s ghost, messages that seem to imply that her death was not self-inflicted and that Aurora may now be in danger, Eve/Aurora knows that she either has to flee or find out what happened three years ago.
Not knowing whom to trust and unable to tell anybody the truth about what is going on, Eve/Aurora is completely on her own in a situation that may well end up killing her.

This was a fun psychological thriller. The Eve/Aurora storyline was interesting and compelling. Flashbacks and dream-sequences give tiny hints at what may be going on but leave the reader with enough questions to eagerly turn the pages in order to discover how everything fits together.
The hints at ghostly and supernatural occurrences give the story an extra edge, especially since Eve/Aurora is as sceptical about such phenomena as the reader is.
Eve/Aurora is a well-rounded character. She is neither to good nor to bad. While she is looking out for herself, she can’t help caring about others, even if that means risking her own safety. The other main characters in the book are multi-facetted as well which both makes the story more realistic and gives it an extra edge.The contrast between down-to-earth Eve and Aurora’s rich and self-absorbed family is fascinating, as is the fact that nobody is exactly who or what they appear to be.
The writing in this book is smooth and the images used are descriptive, adding a richness and literary quality to this story.
My only, minor, issue with this book is that the twist at the end of the story didn’t come as a surprise to me. But then again, I’m not a young adult, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised by that.
Overall though I have to say that this book was a lovely find by an author I’ve never read anything by before. And any day that happens is a good day.

Bain and Bridgette tutor her in a crash course program to get her up to speed on the Silverton family. They don't tell her much about what happened to Aurora, which is alright in their plan because Eve/Aurora is supposed to insist that she has amnesia and doesn't remember anything from her three-year disappearance. As the story advances, Eve manages to piece together more and more of the story and becomes invested in solving the mystery of her double's disappearance and the suicide/murder of her best friend Liza.

The "ghost" part of Ghost Flower enters in when Eve/Aurora starts to receive mysterious phone calls listed as "UNKNOWN NUMBER" on her cell phone. From the snippets of conversation, it appears that Liza is contacting her from beyond the grave. Eve also experiences several terrifying nights in her grandmother Althea where she is staying, as scratching and rattling door handles and faint voices fill a couple of her nights there.

The mystery is good. Readers will keep guessing until the end who the murder, and even the intended murder victim (Liza or Aurora?) is. The murderer's identity is toyed around with too, as the author throws suspicion around the Silverton family members and several key outsiders. There's some hot kissing, a hinted at rape, and some lesbian relationships thrown on top to add to this thrilling potboiler. Sometimes the descriptions and similies are a bit overdone, but it really just adds to the enjoyment of this guilty pleasure read In the end, you discover that Eve was actually Aurora all along (no!)and there's a final scene where she confronts the real killer who turns out to be Liza's perfect sister.

This was a very good book. It had so many twist and turns that it was almost hard to keep up. But one that I may want to read again.

Bon alors…j’étais quelque peu inquiet face à ce livre, vu quelques critiques négatives ! Cependant, je me rends compte que j’ai beaucoup apprécié cette histoire, très original à mon gout, un très bon temps passé auprès de ce livre.

Il y a bien sur bien d’autres personnages, et surtout les deux cousins. Qu’ais-je penser d’eux ? Et bien, au début, je les apprécié et même leur proposition m’a fait plaisir au nom d’Eve, mais bon mon enthousiasme a faibli lorsque j’ai vu leur attitudes. Et en général, je peux dire que quand Eve les appréciait, s’en était de même pour moi !

L’intrigue est donc assez intéressante, dès le début je dirais puisque la proposition arrive assez vite, et l’on rentre de plus en plus dans l’histoire. Découvrir petit à petit la vie d’une fille riche mais avec des problèmes se révèle jouissif, plus on en apprend, plus c’est meilleur… Ainsi, on se prend très vite à l’histoire.

Ce livre est, je pense, un petit mélange des genres. Pourquoi, me direz-vous ? [ je suis en train de poser plein de questions rhétoriques, je sais pas ce qui m’arrive, bref ! ] La raison est qu’au début, on dirait une histoire banale, un peu à la contemporaine, mais par la suite, ça tourne au thriller, et au policier, au final, je me serais même cru dans un livre d’action tellement ça allait vite…comme quoi il faut de tout pour faire un monde, et c’est par cette philosophie, que l’auteur a fait un mélange qui se révèle sublime !

Ce livre, il est vraiment bien fait, mais le meilleur aspect de ce livre, c’est aussi sa petite philosophie qui se cache…je vous la dit ou pas ? Je sais pas, donc je vais vous la dire ! Bon, en fait, ça nous montre assez bien le fait qu’être riche, ça ne veut pas forcément dire heureux, parfois c’est même le contraire. C’est une philosophie banal, mais quand même…

Le seul bémol que j’ai pu noter c’est la fin, il est tant un problème qu’une source de joie. Ainsi, le problème c’est que je n’ai pas tout compris dans ce dénouement, qui est qui, pourquoi, comment… Cependant, le peu que j’ai compris m’a permis d’être surpris, émut et autres sentiments… puisque la fin est vraiment génial, assez complexe comme je l’ai dit, mais ça n’enlève en rien du plaisir que l’on a à la lecture de ce livre.

J’en ai fini avec ce livre, je vous le conseille vivement ! Bonne lecture.(less)

Ghost Flower was certainly a peculiar book, but in a good way! We are first introduced to Eve as a runaway girl working in a Starbucks. She is approached by a brother and sister with a very enticing deal. The siblings want Eve to impersonate their missing cousin Aurora for a sweet $250,000, so they can access her trust fund. As per any thriller, Eve ends up becoming more involved than ever anticipated.

The plot of Ghost Flower is quietly compelling. At first it appears to by a modern day Pygmalion with Eve as the poor girl given the opportunity to make good. I read Ghost Flower by Michele Jaffe at the perfect time. I had just finished Michele Jaffe's previous book, Rosebush, and was I thinking to myself how much I love psychological thrillers. And lo and behold, I see Ghost Flower right in front of me. And while Ghost Flower can be a bit confusing at times, I found myself really gripped by Jaffe's style of writing, the main character and the mystery at the heart of this novel.

I read Ghost Flower by Michele Jaffe at the perfect time. I had just finished Michele Jaffe's previous book, Rosebush, and was I thinking to myself how much I love psychological thrillers. And lo and behold, I see Ghost Flower right in front of me. And while Ghost Flower can be a bit confusing at times, I found myself really gripped by Jaffe's style of writing, the main character and the mystery at the heart of this novel.

Ghost Flower felt like a very different YA read to me. Something about the tone of the novel and the subtle ways in which creepiness and uneasiness is added to the narrative made for a fascinating read. And it really worked for me. I was left so confused and wildly guessing at the different paths this book took.

Ghost Flower begins with our main character, Eve, a waitress in Arizona who keeps to herself after the recent death of her mother. When two wealthy siblings, Bain and Brigitte, approach Eve with an insane offer, Eve has little reason not to carry on for a little while. What Bain and Brigitte propose should be fairly straightforward - they would like Eve to impersonate their cousin, Aurora, who disappeared three years ago, and to whom Eve shares an uncanny resemblence, until 'Aurora's' 18th birthday when she comes into her inheritance. When this happens, the money goes to Bain and Brigitte and Eve is paid a large amount of money and is free to carry on with her previous life.

But things really aren't that simple. And as Eve carries on in the guise of Aurora, very strange things begin to happen. Doing a bit of investigative work uncovers that the night Aurora fled from her life and her family is also the night of Aurora's best friend's apparent suicide. Eve-as-Aurora begins to be haunted by the ghost of Aurora's best friend, and Eve-as-Aurora begins to question her own identity and history and also for her own safety.

I really loved the creepiness and unease of the second half of this book. Everything begins to come together in a way that doesn't quite make sense and everything feels a little dark and eerie almost at once because the build-up is so subtly and easily done. This makes for a really interesting and unsettling book, one that I very much enjoyed. (less)

Ghost Flower was a really good murder mystery that captivated me from the very beginning. I thought the plot and story line was very well-done and engrossing, as well as suspenseful : It had me guessing as to what the heck was going on until the end. I knew I didn’t make a mistake buying this book. It was just as good as I imagined it would be.

Ghost Flower is yet another Michele Jaffe novel packed with secrets, lies, and drama. I've read most of Jaffe's books, from various genres and subgenres, and I'm always impressed by her storytelling abilities, but it's the thrillers, like Rosebush and Ghost Flower, that I find most impressive.

Usually, I find mysteries all too predictable, but that's never the case with Jaffe's novels. Even if I think I've got the twist figured out, I'm never completely sure. And half the time I'm only partially...more

Why Ms Jaffe, why? After stringing me along for 377 pages, you cop out and deliver a one page ending? Come on! Bad author, or more likely, bad editor! One whole star off for you!

After reading Ghost Flower I can definitely say Michele Jaffe is a master at mysteries. I was constantly guessing at who the bad guy was and then telling myself that was crazy and then guessing again and the cycle just continued over and over until I was driving myself crazy. I ended up guessing part of it (though that was bound to happen since I’d made about every guess under the sun) but definitely not all of it.

Ghost Flower is very mysterious, very much a thriller for a teen audience. Fast-paced, dark and dangerous, Eve, and the reader, is always on the lookout, always trying to figure out what happened in the past and what will happen in the near future. It feels like a fairy tale, a struggling girl discovered by two people willing to make her over and have her pretend so they can all get something out of it, but if Eve's not careful, the ending will be anything but a happy ever after.

Eve is really damaged at the start of the book, she's on the run, she's got some hidden shadows in her past that she wants to keep hidden, and then she's tossed into an unfamiliar situation with half-truths and possible lies. It's very interesting when the reader is tossed into a story blind along with the narrator. The author's left you to feel your way around, it's like standing on the outside watching while you've been forced to be on centre stage.

While the book is fast-paced, there were some parts where the story slowed, like the beginning. It took a little to get into the story, to get into Eve's head as she got into Aurora's head. There's also the ghost aspect which sort of takes this book into the realm of the paranormal, but it didn't for me. It felt expected, that Liza's ghost was bound to haunt Aurora when she returned, imposter or not.

Still, in a market where there doesn't seem to be a lot of YA contemporary mysteries like the author's previous Rosebush or the upcoming Ten by Gretchen McNeil, this book holds up as a thrilling tale that will keep readers guessing who's the culprit. At the very end, even I was surprised.(less)

"Oh, this is good so far, very good. I hate having to put this down to get on with my day" were my comments a couple of days in....and it stayed good. Seriously good for a teen novel!! I really did struggle every time I had to put this down and go and do other things, so this afternoon I relented. It had some great twists - in fact so many, I have gotten to the end and wondered how in the hell that was still so believable? Yet, somehow it was. I really enjoyed this!! It reminded me a bit of Josephine Tey's "Brat Ferrar", and I did suspect one of the twists, but the mystery portion kept me guessing until the very end. The writing and plot kept me interested, and the dialogue was also well-written. I read this based on a recommendation by Meg Cabot (Best YA books of 2012) and am glad I did. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

I both hated this book very much and I loved it at the same time. This book is just awful. The way it is written makes me second guess all of my guesses and leaves me super confused throughout the whole book until the last chapter when everything comes together. Why can't the killer at least be semi-obvious? No. Michele Jaffe has to make her readers as confused as possible so they want to throw the book against a wall when they think they figured it out but of course they didn't, so they make mo...more

Very intriguing. I read the last 2/3 of the book in one sitting because I just had to know how it all pieced together. But I will admit, I thought the ending was a let down. I usually love mysteries and the "aha" moment when all the pieces come together, but I didn't get that with this novel. But I gave it 3 stars because it was an engaging novel that kept me entertained...until the end. : )

This book was amazing. Just when you think Jaffe is about to zig she zags. It was awesome a real nail biter. Could have used more background on the romantic perspective that was my only problem because it was a tad unrealistic and unexpected. But I loved this book so much I could have cared less about the romance.

At first I was really into this book, but then it completely unraveled. The longer the story went on the more ridiculous it got. With so many characters popping in and out, and so many "twists" that ended up being nothing, the plot became a confusing mess. By the end I didn't really care who had killed Liza and who was covering it up and what the Family's secrets might be. The first 2/3 of the book is really good. The last third of the book felt like it should have been an ending of a completely different book. It felt like to me that author felt like she wanted to go in a completely different direction but didn't bother to change the beginning of the book.

Shelves: young-adult, suspense

Torn between giving this one three and four stars but as a YA book it's not bad so I'm willing to round up and not penalize the author just because I'm a cranky 43 year old woman reading outside of my age range. Made for quick and easy airplane reading and scratched an itch for suspense without getting too far into the awful stuff that "serious adult authors" often feel the need to get into in the books they write for people my age. So four stars it is, by the tiniest margin.

WHY MICHELE JAFFE WHY?!?!?! I was really disappointed in this book. I LOVED "Bad Kitty" and "Kitty Kitty", but I felt this book fell way short of what Michele Jaffe is capable of. It made me sad.

Woah. What just happened? Michele Jaffe is one of my favorite writers. Her books just explode with life. This one is confusing as hell, but amazingly entertaining as well. I loved it. Rosebush, here I come.
