Vampire Dawn is another fun entry into the world of Samantha Moon, mother and private detective but it's very VERY short. Despite its brevity, Rain packs a good amount of story into this one. Not only is Samantha's humanity more rapidly slipping away but she's also noticing that the aid she gave to her son last year is changing him in ways she's not sure how to handle. He's getting stronger and faster, healing more quickly. Is he becoming what she hates most about herself?

The meat of the story, or the main case, revolves around a series of serial murders and disappearances. People have been disappearing and found in the mountains drained of blood. Samantha helps Detective Sherbet in finding the culprit behind the brutal murders. What's probably more interesting than the actual case is how the supporting characters are tied and affected by their involvement. Sherbet is closely tied to Samantha now and is now getting to know what it's like to be in her head. Literally. Samantha is a psychic supernatural creature of the night and Sherbet finds out the hard way what it's like to be so close to her. In addition, the case of the disappearing/bloodless victims sheds some new light on Detective Hanner.

Not one to fear changing the status quo, JR Rain throws another loop into Samantha's life in the form of the emerald amulet she found in Christmas Moon. What are it's powers and how will they change Samantha going forward?

My one real knock on the story is how short it is. By the time I hit 65% completed on my kindle it was over. I was hoping some more time would have been spent on Samantha's only other vampire companion, Detective Hanner as well as an appearance from her guardian angel that showed up in Christmas Moon. While Hanner makes a small cameo, the guardian angel is nowhere to be found. Danny her lowlife ex makes an appearance as does Archibald Maximus and Kingsley and Fang and some interesting ideas are made on most of those fronts but they're not focused on for too long. For those who haven't read it, Christmas Moon IS included at the very end so it would be best to skip to that and read it first if you haven't already.

Despite its short length it's still a good story in the series and as always it's a fun read. There is no shortage of plot threads for JR Rain to write about in the future so he's left me wanting more without a doubt. (less)

Her son has now developed an unusual strength, he is fighting, taking on the bullies at school, only not one at a time, but 7 or 8 and they older and bigger. This takes Sam in another direction as she desperately seeks answers for her son.

As Sam hunts down a coldblooded killer, another of the ancient relics, a medallion turns up which holds a secret that will change her world completely!

I enjoyed the twists and turns in this one as Sam uncovers the killer with Detective Sherbet, only to find out that one of the Vampire Detectives on the force Hanner, was aware of the killer and why he was draining his victims of blood, and she helped to cover up the killers crimes.

We discover that Detective Hanner has the ability to wipe memories, and she does this to Detective Sherbet, to hide the role she played in the crime, and tells Sam that she too has this ability.

The dark side of Vampirism is discussed between Hanner and Sam.
Sam uncovers the secret to the medallion and you leave at the end of this book with a sigh, at least something good is happening for Sam.

Another great book from J.R. Rain, my only criticism is I wish they were longer! To short and it is over too soon! He has the most amazing characters and could delve deeper into them making the reading longer. This of course comes from a selfish position as a reader, as I always want the story to continue. I give this one 5 stars and am off to read the 6th book in the series

Finally, I found a Samantha Moon novel liked unconditionally. Vampire Moon (Vampire for Hire 5) is the novel I hoped to read when I first read Moon Dance.Although I missed Christmas Moon, I think I was better for that missing knowledge because it had me paying closer detail to the action and actions of the characters.

Vampire Dawn is another mystery that Samantha Moon, mother of two, private investigator and of course vampire, has to solve. This time the mystery is very close to home as people are missing and found dead as well as completely drained of blood. Vampire killing? Perhaps not, but it definitely does have something to do with the creatures of the night and Samantha Moon is the best investigator for finding out the truth.

I finished Vampire Dawn (Vampire for Hire #5) and as always it was great but it was a bit sadder and did not add much to the revelations of Christmas Moon (A Vampire for Hire Novella) . I think I may have to rate this one 4 Stars rather than 5 like all the others but I will sleep on that since I am tired and part of my disappointment is that I did NOT want it to end (which should make me question my less than 5 Star rating). I think as I write this that the book may be much better than I gave it credit for, the "bad" guys were not so bad but at least one or more of the "good" guys are not so good. Mr Rain has once again given us a book that moves this story along a timeline a bit more but these books never seem to leave me with fulfillment but more of a "That was great but what happens now?" and you don't get any answers for months. Ok, maybe it was 5 Stars after all ..... if it wasn't why am I writing a freaking novel telling you why I can't just throw it off and just start a new book tomorrow like I always do? Only the best books can frustrate me so much I think. I really wish these books sucked so i could just ignore the fact that I miss knowing how she is going to cope with the things that are left until the next book. This last year seems to be the year of writers putting out books that add depth to the storylines and setup plots for future books in many of our favorite series and Mr. Rain seems to have followed their lead in that respect since there were some large things to be resolved in the future. The fact that some are more concerning for Samantha Moon - Vampire for Hire and some are more concerning for Samantha Moon the Mom is a bit of why these books are so addicting. I have been a big fan of J.R. Rains books, particularly the Samantha Moon series for some time. Vampire Dawn continues the trandition. Samantha is beginning to notice more signs signalling the loss of her humanity, including increased difficulty being in the sun. I absolutely love this series and have read every book. Just as I was really getting into the book, it ended...sigh. I did read the part about how Christmas Moon was in here also, but I didn't think that this book was going to end when it did. Guess I was just hoping for more. I do wish that these books were slightly longer and a bit more detailed (what happened to fang after he showed up at her house, how is her son dealing with things, etc.), I would gladly wait a little long to have more. Now that Samantha has officially turned into a "Mary Sue" what can we expect her to pull out of her hat next? Eating real food? Something a little more crazy to help her solve the next case? Some new otherworldly creature to show up and prove what a wonderful thing she has going? Perhaps a reincarnation of the Dali Lama will show up next? Maybe God? I guess overall the book was just ok, although it was VERY short. There are several things that kind of bugged me though about the overall story of Samantha and the consistency between the books.

First, Samantha was a vampire for 6 years and nothing happened. Now, during approximately 1 year (estimated) time frame of all of the books, she all of a sudden starts developing all of these benefits. I guess overall the book was just ok, although it was VERY short. There are several things that kind of bugged me though about the overall story of Samantha and the consistency between the books.

First, Samantha was a vampire for 6 years and nothing happened. Now, during approximately 1 year (estimated) time frame of all of the books, she all of a sudden starts developing all of these benefits. Why did it take six years to develop any of them and now she finds a new one every few days/weeks? And between her new super powers, lack of fangs, and the benefits of the medallion, it's hard to picture her as a vampire anymore.

In book 1, Samantha's maker was killed by the vampire hunter apparently relatively easily. In book 4, Dominique is said to be an old vampire who wants to die but can't because he is an old vampire. But in this book, Hanner tells Samantha that her maker was one of the oldest of their kind. So why was Samantha's maker so easy to kill but Dominique couldn't die? On top of that, Samantha is becoming intolerant to the sun (before the medallion of course), so if the sun is more powerful the older they get, why didn't Dominique just step out into the daylight (ok, I know it was book 4, but it was expanded upon by statements in this book)?

The relationships with Fang and Kingsley are lacking. They are brought up, but the characters are never really developed in much depth. And I am sorry, but a mother who loves her kids as much as she claims to sure does dump them off on her sister an awful lot.
Lastly, how can she claim to be a former Federal Agent and help the cops on cases when all she does is destroy evidence? Gee, glad she caught the bad guys, but the search was totally illegal, so all of that evidence is inadmissible in court...
Ok, so obviously there were quite a few things that bothered me. I don't know that I will read any of the future Samantha Moon books, which is a shame because I really liked the first 3. (less)

In Vampire Dawn, we find seven months have passed, and Samantha is still coming to terms with things, not just in her continually evolving abilities, but in her son too. Mr Rain should have hired an editor for this novel. He writes spectacularly fast, but the quality of his editing has gone slowly down over the length of the series. For example, how did the Amethyst medillion in 'Chistmas Moon' turn into an emerald medallion in this story? Why, in chapter one, are they investigating 6 murders, but only recovered 5 bodies? With all of this being said, let me get to the story.

Samantha has been called in by Detective Sherbet to assist with a string of serial killings. The victims were all found drained of blood and not by vampires. There does not seem to be the ususal patterns associated with serial killers. The victims are both male and female. The killer or killers shows no preference. However, Sam takes flight an discovers a bag that includes the belongings of the latest victim as well as his identity. It seems he is an actor at a local playhouse and she is bound and determined to discover who killed him even if it leads her right into the den of some serious wicked evil.

To make matters worse, Anthony, Sam's son is exhibiting some abnormal physical signs associated with vampires, i.e. greater physical strenth and sight. Sam is afraid that he may be changing into a creature of the night. So, she enlists the assistance of Fang who still craves what Samantha can only give, vampirism.

Of course no good Samantha Moon novel would be complete without an appearance by her sleazy ex-husband. He hasn't paid child support in seven months and now beaten and bruised he seeks Sam's help with extortionist requiring he pay protection money each week. Sam agrees to help him once he drops off the support arrears and her usual fee.

I will not reveal any more because I do not want to spoil it for you. Nevertheless, I will say that this book felt like a novella in that it is a set up scene for future installments in the series. I just hope that Rain returns to the quality and length of his previous books chocked full of Rain goodness. I really liked this book, but, I just did not love it and that is a first for me.

Another adventure for the Moon detective agency by Ms. Moon the Vampire/Mother of two office at home. I would give this more stars, because I actually like the story, but it's about as long as a pamphlet. I'd call this a short story and not a novel. It's particularly frustrating that the story ended when my Kindle showed it being 87% complete. The reason for that is that there are many pages of add at the end of the story. I know the author is churning these out quickly and I appreciate that. I just want a more developed, longer story.

I like all the book in this series. This book brings Sam closer to the friends she has made. I love that no matter what is going on in her life or stresses that she is going threw she still finds the time to help others. What I liked most in this book is that though Detective Sherbert is uncomfortable with the whole vampire issue with Sam he is still their for her and still goes to her when he needs help. Good read.

I would have rated this higher, but I was extremely disappointed in the fact that the actual book was only 65% of the book... the other 35% was samples of other authors' books - I don't normally read the samples at the end of books, I can get samples I'm interested straight from Amazon.

Very disappointing... So, out of the 4530 locations in the book (kindle), the book stops at 2977.

Moon Dance, Fang, and Kingsley return for another installment. I enjoyed this chapter but that's what it felt like....a chapter not a book. The book was done at 66% according to my kindle with the remaining 33% being a preview of another book, which I was not interested in. I would have preferred the book was longer but still enjoyed the story!

I have loved all of the Samantha Moon stories so far, but I have to say that for the price, this one was a bit short. I think the author may be spitting the stories out too fast. I say this because there was a lot of repetition in this story and quite a few more editing errors than I like to see or have seen in his books before.

I really enjoy the Samantha Moon series, but this Kindle edition irritated me. For one thing, the "novel" is only a little more than half the total material--not much more than a novella. For another, the extra material includes "Christmas Moon"--which I wouldn't have bought separately at the same time if I had known.

Well, Mr. Rain had better continue his Samantha Moon series!

Once again, a great read. I wish I could explain what I like about these books, but it's hard. I have a hard time putting them down because I HAVE to know what Sam, Fang, or Kingsley are going to do next.

There were a lot of loose ends at the end. I am not sure what I am going to do until book #6 comes out!

I enjoyed this book as I've enjoyed the other Vampire for hire books. There was a short story included called vampire Christmas and if you haven't read it it would be best to read this first as the main book references some developments that occurred there.

I am really loving this series! Very addictive, wonderful take on vampires, detective fiction, and California noir.

Someone once asked me if I could think of any male authors who wrote convincing, fully-developed female characters, and I'm sorry to say I drew a blank. But congratulations, J.R. Rain, because now you're on the top of my very short list.

Samantha Moon delves more into her nature and discovers just how wonderful human blood is compared to her normal diet. Problem is just how willing is are the sources in the vampire community? Plus what is the cost of saving her son from a deadly disease?
