If you liked French Women Don't Get Fat and Japanese Women Don't Get Fat or Old, this is the American version of said books.

What I liked most about this book is the author didn't play around. She fully acknowledged that many very thin New York women have what some would call disordered eating.

Personally the authors push for eating at home, cooking your food yourself and using good ingredients is something more Americans would do well to follow. The book goes on to say that processed food is crap...more

This book will change your fat content. The ideas and concepts work, you just have to find a way to adapt them to your surroundings. Since we all can’t live and work in Manhattan, change our friends and buy designer clothes, what can we do to internalize The Manhattan Diet? Try imagining the impact you would have on your subconscious if while reading this book you took notes and then turned those notes into your personal aspirations. Honestly, it's no wonder these women are skinny (most unhealthily so) but a fabulous life??? You've got to be kidding. They are completely and utterly neurotic, obsessed with their weight, ultra competitive, deceptive and generally I suspect on the verge of a nervous breakdown. You do not have to be this mental to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. I couldn't figure out if we were supposed to be completely appalled by these women or admiring of them. I choose the former
I don't know what's worse - the premise of a diet on a marginal elite subsection of (crazy vapid neurotic shallow and disordered) NYC women as representative of the diets of all manhattan women or the fact that so much of the internal monologues of these women0 rang true with me. Hardly a helpful diet book, but a fascinating (as in "can't-look-away-from-this-train-wreck") read.

As if I didn't know that before: you always are what you eat! Funny and enlightening.
