Shelves: favorites, must-read, young-adult, blew-me-away

Ramen Noodles the staple of college students everywhere. After the age of 17 I refused to eat them. I haven't eaten them since. My college friends were baffled by my extreme dislike of ramen noodles. Tiffany King gets it though.

Yep, sometimes the water would get shut off. We would have to scoop water out of our swimming pool for two weeks to flush the toilet. Cruchy ramen and pb&j sanwhiches sure did taste mighty fine in those days.
Imagine going to high school having had to wash up in the sink because you couldn't shower in your shower due to roots collapsing the sewer line. Who has thousands of dollars to fix that? We sure didn't. I'm sure Katelyn's family wouldn't either.
Imagine losing your home at the age of 17 and bouncing from couch to couch for 6 months. I've lived that. That year I "moved" five times.
Oh yeah, being without things like a landline phone and electricty...yep that happened at least once or twice a year. I get it. I was "there" in this book. Being called names because your mom is so strung out to care about your feelings. Missing a final in high school because she couldn't get her life straightened out enough to wake up and take you to school. Being petrified to drive because your mom was constantly passing out at the wheel from exhaustion. Yep. Katelyn gets my life. And I get hers.

My parents were never physcially abusive. My mom wasn't even that much of verbal abuser. She wasn't around enough to do much damage. Those days are long behind my mom. Thankfully. I could not ask for a better grandma for my daughter. Or a better patner in life. Yes, my mom lives with me. I love her dearly. I am an adult. The past is the past. Does it still hurt to think about it? Yes. But she got better. Katelyn's mother, however, just kept digging her hole and continued to be a selfish mother. That's what mothers like this are. They are selfish. I know the love of a child. I know the joys and pains of being a mother. I would never abandon my child for my own needs. I know what it's like to feel unloved by your parents. It sucks. Big time. Now to the actual book review...kinda.

That was....intense. I mean it really intense. This is one of those books that tugs at your heart strings. It more than tugs at them. It rips your heart out and plays with it for a while then returns it with such beauty that makes you cry and laugh and sigh. It was above all else real. It was beautiful, raw novel that had me biting my nails. It had me crying and hoping and cringing. I could feel the build up of the final straw. I felt it. I knew it was coming. It still shocked me. I still bawled. I still cried happy tears. If only I could hand out this ending to every child that needs it. If only children didn't need to wait for their "someday soon". That would be fantastic.
The writing was flawless. Tiffany King puts the readers in Katelyn's life. We, the reader, are there with her. In her times of joy, and her times of pain. Katelyn, Kevin and Max all have real depth. They are real people. Lucinda is a real asshole too. I mean it. God, I wanted to smack that woman. Well, I wanted to do more than smack her but my private thoughts about her are best kept private. Let's just say that I would take a Countess Bathory approach of how I would treat child abusers (minus the rape/bathing in blood-which, is a myth, btw). I almost feel guilty about gushing about this book. It's just so raw, and gritty and emotional. I feel like I am glorifying Lucinda. I'm not I am praising the Katelyn's of the world. For surviving. For keeping their heads up. For protecting their loved ones and for moving on. Not everyone gets a happy and healed mommy like I did. Not everyone get's a someday soon. It breaks my heart. Never keep silent. No one, and I mean that, No one has the right to use physical or verbal hits against your person. To state institutions: Wake up. Keep families together. Hold your foster families to higher standards and, for heavens sake, stop cutting your employees. If this country was truly dedicated to providing equality and freedom for all then we would not cut our social services. People out there really need them. Not everyone on welfare is scamming the government like Lucinda. In my eyes there were absolutely NO FLAWS in this book. Absolutely none. It is a great book. I am so glad that Ms. King wrote it. I am so glad I took the time to dig through my kindle "pile" to read it.
Overall, Bravo to Ms. King for writing a novel that not only entertains but makes us think. That makes us all wish for someday soon. (less)

"Wishing For Someday Soon" was a sweet novel about the hardships of one young girl's existence, and her harsh determination to protect her brother from the ugliness of their poor life, and their abusive mother. The reality of this life was portrayed in a somewhat lighthearted manner, and was portrayed well, so that the reader could connect with the main character, and the peek into someone else's life - someone who could be anyone...more First off, I would like to thank the author for the review copy!

"Wishing For Someday Soon" was a sweet novel about the hardships of one young girl's existence, and her harsh determination to protect her brother from the ugliness of their poor life, and their abusive mother. The reality of this life was portrayed in a somewhat lighthearted manner, and was portrayed well, so that the reader could connect with the main character, and the peek into someone else's life - someone who could be anyone you know - was inspirational. The love interest was also mostly sweet, something unusual for a lot of YA fiction on the market.

I did have a few issues with the novel, however. The romance in it didn't seem as real and believable to me as it could have, because half of the novel was summarized, and the scenes where the main character and her boyfriend could have interacted (other than physically, which seemed to be the main focus, unfortunately) were shortened immensely. There were quite a few other things summarized, as well, romance aside, and I felt like the summarizing really took away from the novel as a whole. Also, I wished that, given what the novel was about, the writing would have been a bit more gritty, to better get across the harshness of the main character's life.

My biggest con for this novel was technical - missing words, wrong words, conglomerate paragraphs, and odd or off punctuation (primarily lacking commas, and missing question marks). These things, along with the fact that, often, the first person POV switched tenses, threw my reading off quite a bit. Another round of editing would do this novel well.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this story for a change of pace. It was easily read, had cute and sweet parts, and despite the fact that I was hoping for a more in-depth plot, the amount of delving into this type of life that the author did was done well. The characters were mostly believable, and the sense of family between the main character and her brother was heartwarming.

Three of five stars to a sweet, family oriented, quick read.

I truly truly fell in love with Katelyn and how she was written in the book. The depth in to which the author introduces her character is so believable and astounding that it truly hits home. I love how wise and
utterly selfless she is for her age. She is not one of those sappy, weak female characters you often encounter in a lot of books. She holds her defenses up and endures every step of the way.

Great props for King's writing as well. She kept it simple which totally help to not out shadow the heavy issues dealt within her story. The only thing I didn't really like is how fast paced it was. Although Katelyn's character development is full packed and strong, I felt that the minor characters' paled in comparison. King failed to delved into their multiple persona other than portraying them as really really nice people(which I thought was kind of cliche btw.) The relationship between Max and Katelyn, although sweet and utterly squirm-worthy, lacked some sense of reason for me. They were attracted physically that's for sure but I was looking for something gripping and deeper. The sense of family shared between Katelyn and her brother made up for the lack of in-depth plot though so I totally dig that.

Overall, this was a quick and easy read. King will give you a wonderful ensemble of characters and a gripping story of hardships and sacrifices that will leave you pondering about your own 'someday soon'.

I often speculated that if there was a God, he must have given me the gift of losing myself in a book as a lifeline. When I was reading, it didnʼt matter that we were all crammed into the car together twenty-four-seven, or that we had skipped several meals. I could immerse myself so completely into a book that everything else became trivial.

"I know I guess, but I canʼt force something I donʼt feel, especially now that I know how it should feel,"he said, looking at me meaningfully.

“You donʼt even know me,” I said quietly.

“Then give me the chance to get to know you,” he replied sweetly.(less)

Not so easy in the small town of Four Corners, Montana where everybody knows your name and the senior class has a grand total of 16 students. Unused to the kindness of strangers, Katelyn does what she can to protect her heart and her little brother, but the town's residents band together with a boy who loves her to rescue Katelyn and Kevin from the tyranny of her mother.

I agree with some other reviewers when they say that there are elements of this that were too perfect in a Stepfordy kind of way. Still, I think it worked for this story. King sets it up for us in the beginning about how closely knit the town is. That they, collectively, chose to set up the K-12 school instead of send their children to another town. It would stand to reason that they'd all be super nice.and with all the other angsty things going on for Katelyn, I think having the townspeople turn on her would've been overkill. I think that after having moved over 20 times, that she can remember and going to different schools where she fell through the cracks, it's only fair she winds up in a place where everyone wants to save her.

The story line was mildly predictable, the characters fine enough but not super memorable, there were unresolved plot elements (like Bethanny, the other poor girl, and Rebecca, whose only characterization are longing stares at Katelyn and Max), and a couple of editing errors, but nothing compared to some other self published disasters. So it was good. Not great.(less)

How any parent can treat their children like personal slaves, beating them when the mood hits is beyond me, but I know this is the reality for some children and quite possibly some students in my own school.

Katelyn has mastered the art of laying low, keeping the "system" at bay for fear of being separated from her little brother. Having attended more schools than actual years going to school, this hasn't been hard. When she hits the tiny town of Four Corners, she finds she can no longer hide in a school that hasn't seen a new student in six years AND only has one small class per grade level.

Why 5 stars? I have a feeling this is going to be one of those stories that sticks with me. I also think this is a story my teens will love. Katelyn's perseverance and self sacrifice along with Max's determination to love and protect her combine with the majority of the characters refusing to let stereotypes define. I believe this will win over many readers wanting to see the good in this world. But....don't be fooled...things aren't all sunshine and lollipops.

Personal Connection: I had a student my very first year of teaching that started late, clearly tested well behind second grade peers (easily understood after seeing the number of schools already attended), and left after only a few weeks. Ten years later I became a librarian at a high school in a different town. I kid you not, I recognized the student the moment I saw her. I hadn't and still do not have any suspicions of abuse like Katelyn experiences in the story, but I wonder how many schools she has been to and whether she has discovered her "someday soon".(less)

Katelyn has been dealing with her flighty, abusive mother for seventeen years. The only reason she hasn't left long ago was because of her little brother, Kevin. They are both waiting til the day she turns eighteen, so they can leave on their own. Until then, they deal with abuse, both verbal and physical, an endless stream of "step-dweebs", living in cars and shelters, and moving at least 20 times in the last 10 years.

Now, they are in a trailer park in Montana, about to start at yet another new school. It's a very small school, K-12 all in one building, with only 15 kids in Katelyn's senior class.

Katelyn has learned to avoid getting too close, and not let anyone figure out exactly how hard her life is. Closeness leads to questions, and leads to pain when they have to move on again.

Only that's not so easy once Katelyn meets Max.

And here's where the to easy part starts up. I know it's odd to say that a life where your mother beats you fairly regularly is easy, but once they get to Montana, it really is.

Everyone in this town is perfect. The kids are all universally nice, the teachers are caring and patient, even the parents are good. When Katelyn goes to use a state voucher to get school clothes for herself and Kevin, the thrift store worker even lets her use a "Senior" discount, and a few other discounts, so that Katelyn can afford everything. The old man at the store across the street is very sweet, letting them use his bathroom when their pipes freeze, giving them money for groceries, and even buying Katelyn and her brother tons of expensive gifts for Christmas.

So suddenly Katelyn finds herself with a hot, sweet, caring, perfect boyfriend, nice friends, teachers that actually give a crap. Of course, it's too good, and Katelyn tries to pull away from everyone, but it doesn't last. She allows herself to be drawn back in, to the perfection that is Max and his family.

Then, suddenly, as usual, her mom is ready to move on yet again, but for the first time, Katelyn refuses to go, which ends up resulting in a terrible event happening, which lands her brother in the hospital, but then she finds out everyone in town is behind her and her brother. They now have foster homes, and Katelyn is headed off to college in the fall with Max, and everything is perfect, and just so...easy.

The story was good, the writing was good, the characters were good. Nothing exceptional. Nothing I'll remember by next week. The editing had a couple of glitches, but was much better than some of the self pubs I've read lately. I guess I just wanted more depth, more angst, for change to not come so easily. I know they really deserved it, but things just don't change for the better that fast, at least not in my experience.(less)

This book was good and sad, and it brought tears to my eyes. If you liked Reason to Breathe or Heart on a Chain, I'm sure you'll like this book as well. There are similar parts, but it's different in its own way as well.

wow, this a really hard, happy-yet-sad kind of read. its nice how everything worked out for katelyn in the end especially since she deserved it. she's so freaking brave, strong, compassionate and loyal. after reading this book you just can't but admire her can you?

It didn't take very long for me to start ugly crying. It started out rough to read for me, as in it was hard and agonizing for the characters. It was okay

At first you'd think the story is cute and understandable, but as I went on I realized that everything about Wishing Someday Soon is dumb. The logic of this book is- no wait there's no logic in here. Wow. Just wow. I don’t know if I can stop crying long enough to write this review. Wishing For Someday soon was so beautifully written. It had me laughing one minute, then crying the next.

Katelynn is probably the strongest (emotionally speaking) character I’ve ever read about. She’s had to deal with an abusive mom who definitely doesn’t care about anyone but herself. Katelynn is probably the strongest (emotionally speaking) character I’ve ever read about. She’s had to deal with an abusive mom who definitely doesn’t care about anyone but herself. On top of that she practically raised her little brother. It was no surprise that her brother looked up to her. I would look up to her!

Her brother, Kevin, is adorable. He’s the one who made me the laugh the most. His expressions like “true dat” just had me cracking up. Not only is he extremely cute, but he’s so mature for his 9 years. It was very sad, a 9 year old shouldn’t have to see the things that Kevin has. Yet, he managed to stay upbeat. My little brother is the same age as Kevin, and this made me really appreciate him.

Max, Max, Max. I love him. There was no love triangle in this story. And I’m glad. Max was the perfect guy for Katelynn. I’d say it was a simple love story between them, but it really wasn’t considering everything going on around them. Max treats everyone nicely. I think that’s what makes him so great. He was like a role model for Kevin and the type of guy everyone goes to for help. And his family, though a little judgmental at first, were actually really kind.

Really, everyone in the town Katelynn’s family moves to is very caring. They were all willing to help- the student’s at their school, the teachers, Old Man Withers down the street. If people were as good and helpful as these characters were, the world would be a perfect place.

Enough about the characters. The overall story was just…phenomenal. I’ve mentioned before how I schedule my reading, right? Well, I am so glad I allowed myself a week for this one though it was just 281 pages. I just felt like I enjoyed it so much more without rushing it. This one has so much potential to be so much bigger! I’m talking New York Times bestseller, award winning movie. Just.. please. Go get this book and read it. I promise you will not be disappointed by it at all.(less)

This was a great book. The characters felt so real to me, I loved reading about them. Katelyn was so brave given her situation, I couldn't believe how well she handled the emotional and physical abuse. The sad thing is, there are really losers out there like Lucinda who do this crap to their poor kids. It is a sobering thought!! My Take:
This story is Tiffany King's debut in the YA Contemporary Romance genre and I must say that she made a phenomenal transition! The story developed so smoothly and I really felt like I knew the characters. I developed such a connection to the characters, that I had a tough time controlling my emotions. Be prepared that there are some difficult situations that Katelyn deals with in this story.

I adored Katelyn. I wanted to take her and her brother away from their mess of a mother. Katelyn showed so much determination to make a better life for herself and her brother. She definitely is a resilient character.

I loved seeing Katelyn open her heart to Max. It took a lot for her to trust him and I'm so glad she did. Max is an absolute sweetheart! I loved that he "saw" Katelyn and accepted her as she was. As for her mother....I believe there is no need to even discuss that monster of a mother.

Wishing For Someday Soon is a story about hope, love, believing in your heart, and working towards a better future. I am a fan of Tiffany's Saving Angel's Series, but I have to say this is my favorite story to date. Truly, I can't say enough good things about this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone! Please go read it.

I’ll start out with the characters in the book. They were extremely lovable (with the exception of two, and definitely ONE). Once Kevin, Katelyn’s kid brother was mentioned, I knew he’d be one of my favorite characters. Katelyn’s character, while not all too likable for some of her values, is also a great character. She’s strong, loves her brother more than anything else in the world, and will do anything to protect him. What’s not to like? Katelyn has survived years of moving around the country and relentless abuse from her mother Lucinda. All the while she does nothing but hold out hope for her eighteenth year and a plan to leave the hell that is her home life behind.

The secondary characters were, while almost being TOO nice, believable and a godsend in times of need. The adults were always helpful, and through their actions from beginning to end they were a sign that life didn’t have to be lived how Katelyn and Kevin had seen it. There are great people in life and they are willing to help others. Even when someone was dealt a bad hand with parents and lifestyle, it’s nothing to settle for. There are ways out, and the adults and even teenagers, helped to show Katelyn an alternative.

Onething that kept getting on my nerves was the way Katelyn continued to endure the verbal and physical abuse dished out by her mother Lucinda. When her mother wasn’t in the mood to argue she was still using her daughter almost in a slave labor fashion because she couldn’t bother to do things for herself. This was appalling to read. But why do I praise this book? Well, it’s because of elements like this one. It’s UGLY, DISGUSTING, and downright UNACCEPTABLE; it’s also real life. This isn’t a unique experience made up for the world of fiction. There are families like this all over the world today. King painted such a graphic portrait for me as the reader that I couldn’t help but wish to jump into the story and save Katelyn and Kevin on various occasions.

Because of this way King’s writing captured me and kept me reading, it seemed like my emotions mirrored that of the character’s. There were sad moments (very sad ones), happy moments, and moments when there was nothing but anger. I’ve never wanted to jump into a book just to kill off a character so badly before. I think many readers will get this reaction when they read as well. Luckily the good emotions were ones of hope and happiness, those can always brighten the overall story.

This book succeeded in locking me almost completely into the story emotionally. This is something that has never been done by any book or author before. The last scene could easily have killed me if it went on any longer. It’s not that it dragged on and on, it didn’t. What happened is that when I read it, my heart was thumping so hard and fast in my chest that I thought it’d just burst, not allowing me to finish reading. I’ve never been this on edge for any book or movie before. That scene was pure literary magic for me.

From beginning to end this book will take a toll on the readers emotions. I don’t know how any reader will not feel at least the slightest emotional connection to this book.(less)

This book was awesome! This book is kinda similar to Reason To Breathe & Heart on a Chain, but yet different at the same time. I really like how protective Katelyn was over Kevin. I could feel the love she has for him and how important he was to her. Kevin was just a sweet and really thoughtful and smart kid. Their relationship and bond was one great thing about this book. I don't often read books without any sort of paranormal/mystical/magical element, but I thought I'd enjoy "Wishing for Someday Soon" considering that it ran along the lines of my Helping Hands series. I was right - this is one of the best books I've read in awhile.

I think it's hard to write in first person in a way that really draws in the reader without making it overly drawn out and convoluted, but King really pulls it off. We, as readers, are drawn into Katelyn's story and feel what she feel...more
