’ve been a Vanessa Kelly fan since I read an ARC of her debut book, Mastering the Marquess, which reminded me in many ways of my beloved traditional Regencies, which had all but disappeared at that point. One of the things I liked best was the strong, resourceful heroine who was also flawed and vulnerable. That has become the pattern of Kelly’s books, and it’s one of the reasons they are all favorites of mine. Phoebe is no exception. I loved her independence, her honesty, her refusal to forsake...more

I usually do not read historicals and I'm not really sure why. Well that is not entirely true. I used to read historicals and got sick of being bogged down by the setting. They began to run together of lists of clothing and ways the world was different 150 years ago. It became less about the romance and more about the chamber pots and inappropriate behaviors of ladies. I found I could but 150 pages+ out and the story would not change at all!

Loved the detail of the period. Ms. Kelly really brought to life the early 1800s, both for the servants and the nobility, as well as a glimpse into who the Quakers were, and a healthy dose of life as an English aristocrat. Her story brought in many earlier beloved characters but I never felt lost as to who was who.
I liked the main characters, Lucas and Phoebe, immensely, but without writing a spoiler, I wished for a more satisfactory change to the hero's outlook and more of him needing to actua...more

When Quaker, Phoebe Linville is summoned by her maternal grandfather to England to live, she is arrives to to find her grandfather has just passed away. Retired- soldier, Major Lucas Stanton has inherited the earldom from Phoebe's grandfather. The deceased earl made Lucas promise to take care of Phoebe in any way he possibly can, which could include marriage to the seemingly plain woman. There is much more to Phoebe than meets the eye as Lucas finds Phoebe not only to be so different from most o...more
This started out as a really cute story, but I have to say that I got bored about 1/2 through. Honestly the sex scenes were waaaay too long (I find myself saying this alot recently) and they weren't intriguing enough for me to even read. I just skipped them almost completely. I got tired of all the argueing and the story just lost the enchantment for me, even though I was looking for a nice holiday read.

“Desire looks clear from the eyes of a lovely bride: power as strong as the founded world.” – Sophocles
If I were to write a historical romance, it would be an American finding her way through Regency society. Luckily I don’t have to write that story as Vanessa Kelly has already done so with MY MISTLETOE BRIDE. She marries several themes – fish out of water, embraced by family, marriage of convenience, and ultimately finding one’s life mate. Add the holiday theme with its traditional customs that...more

A wonderfully romantic tale, great for the holidays or any time of year! Taken from my review at RomanceJunkies.com:
Growing up in a Quaker household, Phoebe Linville’s one joy was the bedtime stories her mother told her of the fairies and sprites that roamed the green and gentle land of the old country. Her mother had been estranged from her English relatives after marrying a Quaker and moving to America, but she took comfort in telling the stories and Phoebe’s father had understood his wife’s n...more

His Mistletoe Bride by Vanessa Kelly was a great read, I always enjoy reading a holiday spirit novel and this one was no exception. I loved the fact that she used Mistletoe as the manor’s name and that some of the servants had the surname Christmas.
I’m fortunate to have been given the opportunity to read this copy of His Mistletoe Bride by this author for an honest review. This was my first historical novel that I read by Vanessa Kelly and I have to say that she has a great writing style.

YAY! Another Christmas book knocked down! That's right I'm making progress. Anyways, I just finished a charming and unique story, His Mistletoe Bride by Vanessa Kelly. Here's what makes the story unique:

Every year I try to read a handful of holiday romances, and every year I realize that maybe that extra dose of sentiment is a bit too much. Personally, I need a little bit of bite to cut the sugar. Suspense. Sarcasm. Foul language. Something. This book was pleasant enough reading, but it wasn't super compelling. In addition, it veered perilously close to overboard on the cheese factor. Mistletoe Manor, a butler named Christmas, a dog named Holly. It comes off as a little twee. There's also a ref...more

Must I really say how tired I am of men's bullshit?
Gosh, why is it so difficult to say what they truly feel? Especially when they already know that the women by their side love them!
Well, this book is nothing special.
I picked it up because of the Christmas theme, since I am a bit nostalgic today and I felt like sitting here in my couch, with my warm blanket, drinking hot chocolate and reading a book that made me feel cozy.

I am extremely fortunate to have been given an advance copy of His Mistletoe Bride, by one of my favorite historical romance authors, Vanessa Kelly. I thoroughly believe Vanessa could write about the phone book and make it an enthralling tale. Her writing style is smart, engaging, and sexy. Her descriptions are pure poetry. And she skillfully brings her characters to life with a mastery I envy as a fellow author, and admire and enjoy as a reader.

This would be 3.5 stars if the system made it possible.
I liked the main characters. Phoebe, the American Quaker who never quite fit in, comes to find her English family and finally find a place where she can be loved and accepted. Lucas, the war hero, struggles to find his way in his new life as lord of Mistletoe Manor, realizing that, unlike military life, ordinary people do not just hop to it when orders are given. His leadership must provide both hope and inspiration.

Sweet story, although I would have liked to see a lot more of the hero's POV. The story is told almost entirely from the heroine's POV and drags in places for that reason - Phoebe is quite insecure in her character, because of the way she was brought up. She also feels out of place as an American Quaker suddenly dropped into a wealthy and aristocratic English family, and after she marries the hero, she feels insecure about the marriage. The main character's insecurity is not a good theme for a r...more

Oh how I love the holidays! Especially spending them with characters like Phoebe and Lucas at a place called Mistletoe Manor. Their story joins them after the passing of Phoebe’s grandfather and Lucas’ inheritance of, well……Phoebe. These two make an enjoyable, yet unlikely, couple and I do not think that the backdrop could have been any more engaging. I was immediately interested in their entire story and was ready to see how it all played out. The majority of my interested was in how the Christ...more
Phoebe Linville is delighted to finally be going to England to meet her long estranged grandfather. It caused much pain for her mother and she died without resolving the conflict from her marrying a Quaker and moving to America. Now Phoebe has the chance to put the past behind her and find some happiness with her English relatives. However, much to her disappointment, she is met with the news that her grandfather passed away during her voyage over and her grandfather left a very unusual request...more
Wish we were allowed decimals - would have given His Mistletoe Bride 3.5 stars. Its a breezy read mostly, found myself floundering at one or two places from the slow pace. Decently developed characters of the H/H though the Lucas and Silverton feud was a tad overdone...thought a guy would get over having been cuckolded once he's happily married. Enjoyed the Christmas theme and the way its made a character in the story.
The hero is an overbearing, immature lout, the heroine is a spineless, ninnyhammer. She gets a few good lines, which are totally unbelievable in her role of "fallen" Quaker. The portrayal of the Quaker religion is both inaccurate and belittling. Other than that, poor plot, plodding style of writing and characters impossible to like.
This was my first book by this Author and I loved it. It was witty and well written and I fell in love with all of the characters—Though Lucas did make me want to brain him a couple of times; What Romance Hero doesn't? Especially in this time period?
I'm glad I took a chance on this book and will definitely look for more from Vanessa Kelly.

A story about a young women finding her place in the world and the man she shares it with. The struggle as they learn to trust each other and themselves. Good characters and story. Sexy seduction, believable family and friend relationships. I enjoyed the story, but it losses a star due to feeling dragged out in a parts, felt that the heroine would have put up a bit more fight, and a few errors in the writing. Recommend: Yes.
