Well, Katie McGarry just wowed me again! Dare to You was just as AMAZING if not more that Pushing the Limits!! I was full of intense emotions, and on the edge of my seat the entire read, completely immersed in Beth and Ryan’s story!!

Beth Risk from Dare You To : Otherwise known as a classic example of how to self-sabotage.

3.5 stars. I'll be going against the grain in saying that I liked this book better than the first in the series. I understand that the masses went wild over Pushing the Limits, but I struggled with shakily written stereotypes and repetitive speech patterns. That said, the first book was engaging and the characters were likable, which was enough of a reason for me to want to continue on with the series.

Cover & Blurb: Beth is very pretty, and so much unlike what I had in mind. And erm... is it okay if I like Ryan a little as in a whole damn lot? Gee, that hunk!

I'm certain it's gonna be a trilogy now, unless Isaiah finds his own HEA in Dare You To, which I sincerely doubt. So, make it three McGarry! You know you want to!

After Pushing the Limits became one of my favorite reads of last year, I went into this one with a lot of enthusiasm and high expectations. I'm sad that I didn't en up loving it as much, but I still quite enjoyed it and am happy that I read it. I also can see why so many are enamored by it, if I had read it at another time I might have enjoyed it much more as well. I'm sad that I didn't en up loving it as much, but I still quite enjoyed it and am happy that I read it. I also can see why so many are enamored by it, if I had read it at another time I might have enjoyed it much more as well. As it stands I've been reading a string of similarly plotted books lately so my patience for certain elements of the book has been worn thin.

Unlike with Pushing the Limits, I had a difficult time with the characters and romance in this sequel. I liked the characters okay, and the chemistry is definitely not missing between them, but the back and forth, hot and cold romance they develop went on a little too long for me until I became utterly exhausted with it. Beth is dealing with a drunk mother who has an abusive boyfriend, making her somewhat of a bitter person who blocks everyone out. She has a hard time opening up to anybody, let alone letting anyone get close enough for her to fall in love. Consequently, she's not an easy character to like, but she's meant to be that way. We're meant to sympathize with her situation, which I did, and like how she grows out of it through the story (like expected), but this did not happen until after she had me wanting to rip my hair out. The problem was more with how she dealt with Ryan than anything else. Athletic superstar, popular, rich, and with a bright future ahead of him, Ryan is Beth's polar opposite. It's, at the same time, the allure and the downfall of the romance. Beth being so cautious makes it extremely difficult for Ryan to get her to let him in. At first this was a great kind of frustration. The kind where you yearn for them to finally open up to each other and become rocks to lean on, however this fails to happen for what felt like an extremely long time, I began to lose my eagerness and gain some irritation. My patience for Beth to finally get a clue that the whole world wasn't out to get her ran out and I simply wanted to slap her silly for trying to ruin every good thing she had. I get that she's had a very very hard life, her crappy attitude was just making it worse for herself which made it hard for me to connect with her more than on the surface. Perhaps her keeping everyone at arm's length worked TOO well :) I also can't fail to mention the constant referral to Ryan's looks. She must have described his gorgeous godliness over a dozen times in the book. We get it, he's sculpted perfection, let's move on, shall we?

No matter my complaints, the characters are still carved into real human beings. The character development doesn't miss its mark as Katie, again, creates realistic characters with hearts you can feel beating and breaking. Even though I was a little irritated, I still couldn't help but feel sympathetic towards both of them. Beth for her screwed up upbringing, and Ryan for the pressure he was brought up under. Another part of these books that I enjoy is how it's not JUST about the romance. Beth has to acclimate to a whole new life where she feels anything but welcome, while Ryan is looking at his family crumbling after his brother announced he was gay to a father who thinks the most important thing is perfect outward appearance.

As with any companion novel it's always fun to see old characters again. While I loved hearing from Echo and Noah in their brief cameos in this book, Isaiah stole my heart away. I love his character and my heart broke for him in more ways than one. His character has just as much soul and presence, getting his story line ready for the next book. The 3rd installment of this series will be his story, and I absolutely cannot wait for it as I have a very big feeling it will be my absolute favorite. I just hope he gets his happy ending or I may be found in a puddle of my own tears.

Dare You To may not have been as good to me as I had hoped, but I still found myself flipping the pages eagerly, waiting and hoping these two will finally give in to each other completely. The love and chemistry they share make all the hurt and frustration worth it.

When I finished Pushing the Limits and saw that Beth is getting her own story I was beyond surprised to see that Beth isn't getting with Isaiah but someone else!!!I loved Isaiah as much as I loved Noah!!!What a pity!I really wanted to see them together..

With Dare You To promising an equally powerful story, I couldn’t not read it. Luckily for me, Katie McGarry seems to know exactly what I want and when I want it…

Ryan Stone and Beth Risk are almost polar opposites – a focused, career-driven boy and a troubled, hard-bitten girl. Ryan has opportunities and dreams, whereas Beth refuses to even chance the illusion of dreams. The two meet – and you know how this book ends. It is not exactly teeming with originality and the book description is transparent enough to predict the outcome. But it is the journey that is important here – the slow transition from the Beth Risk we meet at the start to the Beth Risk we depart with at the end. It is about the Ryan Stone that is instantly labelled the ‘golden boy’ and the Ryan Stone that worries about the hidden cracks in his family. It is about two teenagers who inadvertently become each other’s supports, who reluctantly play a game, and who dare to find reason to hope for better.

The two characters are likeable – very likeable, in fact – though Beth takes a fraction longer to warm to. This, I suppose, is expected. Her unsettled past with her mother leaves her in an emotional position no teenager should have to be in. She is covered in spikes, ready to expect and accept the worst, ready to withdraw within herself when needed, and ready to lash out without restraint. Trust is not something that comes easily to Beth, and this is reflected in her narrative.

“Emotion is evil. People who make me feel are worse. I take comfort in the stone inside of me. If I don’t feel, I don’t hurt.”

Ryan helps draw the true Beth out of her shell, and as he does, Beth helps Ryan gain an entirely different sort of confidence. With a controlling father that refuses to believe in anything other than baseball, Ryan is a lot less free than most people assume. His problems might seem shades away from Beth’s, yet there is never a moment when Ryan’s situation feels any less important. There is angst, yes, and maybe even a little drama, but McGarry makes it work perfectly for her characters and their combined and separate stories. It helps (it helps a lot) that the romantic tension in this book is wonderfully handled, with plenty of chemistry-filled scenes to satisfy. Even better that the usual romance clichés are turned on their heads…

Beth and Ryan aren’t the only characters capable of evoking a response here. It isn’t often that I appreciate parent figures in fiction, but Beth’s uncle – Scott Risk, baseball star and generally decent bloke – pleasantly surprised me. He has a good heart, and there are few things in this world that appeal to me more than simple human decency.

I may not have been as emotionally moved by this book as McGarry’s Pushing the Limits, but even so, I liked it just as much, if not more. This is a truly stunning contemporary book and only further reason to read anything and everything that Katie McGarry writes in the future.

I haven't had this feeling for ages, you know the one, where you feel compelled to stay up late into the night to finish a book and when you do finish, you can't form a coherent sentence. Well that's how I felt with Dare You To. I so needed a book like this to enter my life right now. I've read a few great books lately but nothing that has completely blown me away and left me wanting more but Dare You To provided me just that, and it proves why I love about reading so much.

Beth was a favourite of mine from Pushing the Limits, she comes across as bad girl who will happily says what she thinks, whenever she likes. She's honest, protective and feisty and even though she comes across as the bad girl, she's really a girl who puts on a front. She feels like she has no other choice. Now Ryan, he's the opposite to Beth. I'm not sure what I was really expecting from his character - a jock who was mean to people but boy, was he surprising. He was sweet, caring and not the typical jock I was expecting. I ended up really falling him as a character. I also loved Ryan's friends - again they were characters that surprised me because they were so nice. And of course, I can't forget Noah, Echo and Isaiah. Isaiah literally - my heart broke for him. His relationship with Beth is one based on friendship and I know a lot of people were thinking WHAT, when they found out Dare You To was Beth and Ryan's story but I'm kind of glad now, because we get his story in Crash Into You. I'm guessing it's due for release in 2014 - maybe? But hey, I can not wait!

All in all, Katie McGarry's Dare You To oozes with sexual tension, swoon worthy quotes and a love story that leaves a mark on your heart. It's a story about loss, love, sacrifice, betrayal and hope and it's one that will stay with me for a very long time. I highly suggest you pick up some of Katie's work if you haven't before.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Noah and Echo's book, mostly because I felt it was bogged down by the heaviness of the theme without succeeding at making me actually care for the characters (especially Echo) enough to sympathize. I didn't even care much for Beth and was certainly not raring to know her story. She came across as a whiny, pessimistic, emo, wannabe.

So this was a pleasant curve ball for me.

I have to admit I was nervous when I first started reading this book. Any story that starts with the popular jock asking out the “freaky” girl from the wrong side of tracks because of a dare, makes me think I have stepped into a bad teen movie cliché. But thankfully (despite a few moments I will let slide) the author managed to steer away from that pit fall and stay original. The “freaky” girl had no desire to be popular and the jock had no interest in changing her. And best of all there was no gaming playing!

Beth (who I assume we all know for the previous book) has led a tragic and troubled life. And because of this has created a tough and almost impenetrable exterior. Ryan in contrast is the golden boy with the seemingly perfect life and family, while in reality thing are not that great.

I actually found Beth very relatable. (I know a lot of people would not agree.) I loved her loyalty, no matter how miss guided and the fact that she always stood her ground and was true to herself. And these are the exact same reasons why I often did not like Ryan. I just wanted him to grow up, grow a pair, stand up to his homophobic parents and make some decisive decisions about his life! Thankfully both characters did evolve throughout the book and Ryan does redeem himself, although he will never be my favorite romantic lead.

This book is full of teenage and adult angst and deals with some serious issues. Yes I wish some of the characterizations weren't so stereotypical and there was a lot of judgementalness (is that a word?) going on in this book that really did rub me up the wrong way. I especially disliked Alison (Scott’s wife.) But despite having no great affection for the hero and occasionally being pissed off at numerous others cast members, as well as constantly feeling desperately sorry for Isaiah. I really did enjoy this book and had some serious trouble putting it down.

Katie McGarry’s Dare You To is YA at its best!!

I was thoroughly engrossed in this story from the first page and I have to admit that I read it straight through and I still wanted more. There isn't a cliffhanger and we get an hea, I just could have read about these characters forever. Luckily Katie McGarry will have another installment to this series.

It was somewhere around a 4 for me, I liked the beginning of this but loved the second half of the book.

This is the story of Beth from the book Pushing the Limits. She gets pulled away from her town and gets a new start in the town of Groveton with her Uncle Scott. In Groveton she has a chance meeting with Ryan during one of Ryan’s dares and so the story of Beth and Ryan.

It was somewhere around a 4 for me, I liked the beginning of this but loved the second half of the book.

This is the story of Beth from the book Pushing the Limits. She gets pulled away from her town and gets a new start in the town of Groveton with her Uncle Scott. In Groveton she has a chance meeting with Ryan during one of Ryan’s dares and so the story of Beth and Ryan.

I really struggled with the beginning of this book. I went into the book, looking forward to seeing Beth and Isaiah’s story grow. I really liked the dark edge to both their characters and wanted to see what happened with them. But this is a story about Beth and Ryan. Ryan is the perfect boy. Pitcher on HS baseball team, father running for mayor, mommy a big part of the PTA, etc… It took me a while to get into the story because I didn’t care about Ryan. His story was a fun read and although I liked him and his friends, the drama that he had to deal with was run of the mill crap and I didn’t find myself rooting for him. In matter of fact, he is so used to winning and I wanted Beth to end up with Isaiah. Beth being so abrasive was also a little tough at first also. She is being saved by her rich uncle that she hates in the beginning of the book and we don’t know why. All we see is her getting a chance at a better life and wanting nothing to do with that brighter future.

Enter the second half of the book for me. Ryan’s character started growing on me and when it looked like he was going to treat Beth good and maybe he would be good for her, the story started snowballing for me. I like hero’s that treat the girl right. Ryan is more wholesome than the usual popular HS jock . He takes things slow with Beth and I liked the pace of their relationship for a YA story. We get to see some of the flaws in his life and I started rooting for him to win over Beth. Beth’s story takes off running in the second half of the book also. We see some of Echo, Noah and Isaiah as Beth tries to deal with life away from her hometown and living in Groveton without her best friends. She meets her childhood best friend Lacy in Groveton and everything looks like it could all fall into place. Butttt let’s not forget that Beth was brought into this world by a messed up human being called mom. So she is torn between her new life and saving her mom.

I really liked the story once it got rolling. Beth being abrasive and Ryan being too perfect affected a pretty good portion of the book but it is definitely worth a peek. I hear the next book is Isaiah’s story and I can’t wait for that book!

I want to read this now!!! Gaah!
I was a wee bit shocked she wasn't partnered with Isaiah but, after reading the first chapter, I just didn't care because the story looks veryyyyy interesting. I love stories involving dares/bets. I know they aren't the most original idea but they sure do add drama and all those other things that come with romance.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR 2013.

Dare You To screams A MAY ZING! Once again I fell in love with Katie's writing. In this book, it went along with Beth, from Pushing the Limits and a baseball player, Ryan. Halfway through the book I was thinking that there should totally be teams for the book, because I was Team Isaiah. <3 However, as the story and drama unfolds it's way to the end, I was stoked.

After reading Pushing the Limits, Katie McGarry's debut novel, I had high expectations for Dare You To. It's an understatement to say that they were completely demolished and left on the floor in a pile of rubble.

Is it fair to say that I love Ryan? I even made a graphic. Although it's horrible.

This is basically what I went through the entire novel. I was battling with my strong urge to steal Ryan, and my even stronger urge to just keep reading and shut up so Beth and Ryan could have the adorable moment. This time, Ryan was the person that helped Beth heal from her broken, ruined home. The even realer thing was the fact that Ryan wasn't just a spoiled rich kid that got whatever he wanted; he also had all of his own demons and had to learn to get rid of them, as well. He seriously was so swoon-worthy! Additionally, just look at that cover! And then zoom in on Ryan. Zoom in even further...and...FANGIRL! There we go! He was so insanely compassionate, tough, and realistic. The way that Katie McGarry can portray such compelling and strong male voices with what seems like no effort at all is so baffling to me. That is talent right here, people.

Another character that I loved with all of my heart was Beth. She was originally part of the trio with Noah and Isaiah, and in Dare You To, she was forced to move out of her home and into her uncle's, where she started a new school, with new people, and Ryan Stone. It broke my heart to see how broken and guarded Beth was because of her family. But the best part about her broken home was watching her heal, moving on, and coming to the terms with the fact that her house needed to be fixed, and soon. Beth's character development was just so amazing, and she had so many emotions, which we experienced in full spectrum.

Now that we've discussed both characters separately, we have to discuss them as a couple.

I have a slight obsession with gradients these days, so don't mind little old me and my pictures. However, it's totally true! Their romance was so hot, but at the same time it was so unbelievably sweet. It started off as an innocent dare from Ryan's friends, but it soon spiraled into a whirlwind of emotions and, most importantly, love. I couldn't get enough of them, and Katie made their romance seem so believable. I even thought that I was Beth or Ryan for a few minutes before snapping back into a crazed reading frenzy.

Everything about Dare You To by Katie McGarry was just so beautiful. The romance was electrifying, and the character development of our two main characters was as memorable as could be. Easily enough, Dare You To has taken its spot on my favorites list, and it may just end up on your list, too.(less)

4.5 stars - I had to knock a half-star because Beth really frustrated me.

When I read the summary, I thought, "Oh no, it's going to be one of those books where the guy is dared to ask the girl out, they fall for each other, and she'll find out." But then, I really liked "Pushing the Limits," so I thought why not. Turns out, that wasn't what the story was about - at all!

I admit, I read the first few chapters and then set the book aside for a few days. I like sassy characters, but Beth was just dow...more 4.5 stars - I had to knock a half-star because Beth really frustrated me.

I admit, I read the first few chapters and then set the book aside for a few days. I like sassy characters, but Beth was just downright bitchy. But she actually grew on me surprisingly fast - not because her situation gave reason for her attitude, but because she was a much deeper person than that.

What won me over was her insistence on helping her mother. (It was also the reason why I knocked off a half star because she blindness frustrated me beyond words. I just wanted to shake her and yell, "Wake up!") However, it also gave her an edge over other characters written like her. Yes, she has a terrible life, and she took it out on the world. But her selflessness, her determination and her devotion to her mother was very admirable, even when her mother had let her down so, so many times.

I really liked the analogy of the bird trapped in the barn. To me, it meant so much. And the bottle of rain? I admit, I squeed a bit there. How utterly romantic. Call it cheesy if you want, but I was so caught up in the story that it just really moved me.

Ryan wasn't too far off from your typical golden boy with problems at home. Maybe McGarry overdid it a little bit with all his problems - the brother, his father's expectations, political campaigns, his mother's social groups, everything else - but I didn't mind it so much in this book. Ryan was just an overall likable guy.

And the book had some really great lines. The bickering had me smile a few times. Their exchanges made me squee every now and then. And yes, I shed a few tears - don't worry, I wasn't bawling, but yeah, moving on.

While I'm gushing. I really like Scott. I admire him for what he had to go through, especially when he was so young when Beth was born. And it's inspiring to see that he got out. And I felt for him and how he tried so hard with her. And with everything that he knew, it must have been hard to try to keep it to himself to protect her - especially when you have a wife that is not so supportive of the situation. Sometimes you have to take care of your immediate family first, but when someone like a niece desperately needs your help, you could just easily turn away. I think it was awfully big of him to take on such a responsibility. My only complaint is that I wish I saw more from Allison - it was just a big leap from hating her so much to the last scene.

Overall, I really liked the book. I was emotionally invested in the characters, and yes, it was predictable, but it was very much enjoyable. McGarry hasn't done me wrong yet, and I can't wait for the next book. For Isaiah fans, I wouldn't be surprised if the next book is about him.(less)
