I'm not usually a fan of serial killer mysteries but every so often one comes along that makes not turning the page impossible. I started The Surreal Killer in the afternoon and with only a few breaks, finished in the am hours. Mr. Last kept me on the edge of my seat while throwing in fascinating facts about South American culture and history. His descriptive ability paints a picture of surrounding beauty and unique people. It's hard not to plan my next vacation to visit the places he writes ...more

OK–checklist for the South America trip:

Camera–check. Extra batteries–check. Tour book–check.

Handgun and extra ammo–check.

Very much enjoyed this book, the first I've read by this author, but not the last.

The serial killer plot is believable and well crafted with an interesting twist. The author, instead of going for the gore and splash, is focused on the deductive process, a much more cerebral process. There is a great deal of fascinating detail about the culture and people of several South American countries and cities as well as truly vivid descriptions of the land and the Inca history and culture.

Although I ususally enjoy murder mysteries this book was more history than anything and I found it boring and hard to get through.

Really not that interesting or well written to be that honest. I won't be bothering reading any more by this author.
