What a cool idea for a book! I'm not an expert on these things, but it's clear that Susan Buchanan studied the astrological signs inside and out because as I was reading I would think "oh, that sounds exactly like what (insert Cancer friend) would do" or "that sounds just like what (insert Aries relative) would say." Not only that, she obviously studied a whole lot more than astrological signs - developing 12 different people with 12 different careers in 12 different industries is no small feat....more

Ultimately they are all just searching for their own happiness, but while reading, I wondered how relevant their zodiac signs were, and how all of the characters would end up connected.

Overall, this story was quite fun. I found the ending interesting but honestly was expecting more of a bang than what I got. Other than that, I really enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the places visited as well as the personal interactions that each of the characters faced. The writing was well done and the flow was steady throughout. The author did a good job of creating a very realistic story and found a unique way to tie in the zodiac signs to the story.

As a big Chick Lit fan, I'm so glad to have discovered Susan Buchanan and her book Sign of the Times!

The story introduces a character with the characteristics of different zodiac signs, they all have something to do with each other either directly or indirectly. One thing I liked was the fact that none of the characters were evil, even the ones that were making mistakes were likable and I didn't want anything bad to happen to them.

I really didn't like this book... I don't normally write reviews, but found this book extremely annoying and I am surprised there are so many great reviews? I must have missed something. To me it is written very abruptly with very short sentences and each chapter being a different person telling a different aspect of the same story. Susan Buchanan is a genius! This novel was not only clever, witty and hilarious, but absolutely amazing! I couldn't put it down! The intricate characters and plot keep are absolutely stunning and perfectly executed. Each of the twelve characters are developed in such a way that the reader knows each one by the end. Normally I don't feel that a person is a certain *type* because of their *star sign*, but Susan wove the characteristics/beliefs into the story in a way that was very believable.

I have to admit, I had a false start with this one. I only read a few chapters and took it at face value as being a story about Holly and her visit to Italy. For me, Holly was one of the less interesting characters. I certainly couldn't have read a whole book about her.

As soon as I read the synopsis I had a feeling this would be my kind of story and I was right because it grabbed my attention within the first chapter. It is based in Scotland and Italy and I enjoyed reading the vivid descriptions of these places, also the way the author described the food and meals really got my mouth-watering.

Maggie, Aquarius is everlasting student. After her marriage fell apart, she has returned to what she knew the best, studying and teaching.

Jennifer, Pisces, is Maggie’s best friend. She takes care for her ill mother. She sacrificed her personal life to be there for her mom. I’ve been a caregiver by myself, so it was easy for me to find myself into her story. I could feel Jennifer’s pain seeing her mother suffering. Her life changed when she met Ben. She wants to be happy, but her duties always come first. But Ben has some skeletons in his closet. Can Jennifer handle with them?

Those were just some of the characters. Just to get you into the story. I am Virgo, so I couldn’t wait to read what was the story for Virgo person. I loved it. I loved all the characters, well, most of them. Some of them were cheaters, some liars, but they were all looking for their personal happiness. I was wondering how would this story end, how were all these people connected. I was expecting some more dramatic end, but this leaves a place for book two. I hope that there will be book two. I liked the way the stories were narrated, I liked the flow, the vivid descriptions of the places. I also liked that the author has made this story international including Italians and Poles, also including some Italian and Polish phrases. I would recommend this story for everyone. I am sure that everyone can find a little bit of him/herself in some of the twelve stories in this book.(less)

The lovely Susan Buchanan kindly asked me if I wanted to review her book and I of course was up for it. Even though, I have never read a book similar to this one I was intrigued on how the plot would be developed and whether or not I would enjoy reading it.

But I'm glad to say that I really enjoyed it and was extremely curious as to how the story would unfold.
Even though there were many characters, only twelve were the main ones as each one of them had a different star sign. Their lives and decisions were influenced by their star signs including their lifestyles. Holly being a Sagittarius was a travel writer, loved to discover new places, her boyfriend Tom being a Capricorn owned his own business and loved being financially secure as well as Oscar since he is an Taurus.
Jennifer being a Cancer could not have lived knowing that her mother would be living in a care home, therefore decided to be a carer and take care of her.
Ben being an Aries seemed to be very impatient as just after 4 months of dating was married and soon would be a divorced man.
Lucy, Holly's sister is a Gemini and Carl, her boyfriend finds it very difficult to pin her down.
Maria a Leo is a single mother and owns her successful business and helps Czeslawa, who is her new neighbours.
Antonia, Jac's wife is worried with her son, as she discovers that his grades have declined and is soon to have the shock of her life.
Maggie, an Aquarius was always looking to help people in need even if it means that she gets into trouble.

As the story progresses they soon realise that have more in common when they reunite to celebrate the release of Holly's latest book.

The most intriguing characters for me were the couples because they weren't being honest with each other and I wanted to see, when they would reveal the truth and stop running away from it. They were all looking for happiness but they realised that somtimes what they have isn't what they need.

If there is a sequel to this book, I would definitely be really interested in reading it!

I do admire an ambitious novel. Here there are twelve main characters and several second leads. The main ones broadly comply with their zodiac signs and at certain stages of the novel interact. I didn't check all the attributes of the signs but she certainly gets mine right! I think this treatment is unique and have happily awarded an extra star to recognise that.

The action tales place mainly in Italy and Scotland and is normally relationship-based: this embraces romantic, family, and friends. Sometimes it depicts how easily a current loving relationship can be threatened and at others it warmly salutes the often more permanent benefits of non-romantic friendhips. Again, I thought this was nicely achieved and it chimes somewhat with my own attitudes.

The Italian sections illustrate the author's enthusiasm for foreign climes; her skill with languages, and her liking for food and drink. I liked them. Those in Scotland, where I think she normally resides are more 'real life'. They are not reticent when it comes to illustrating the love Scots traditionally possess for food and alcohol, especially the latter. I had the occasional feeling that the frequent pub sections in one chapter were perhaps excessive for normal plot development but it caused me no real difficulties and other will no doubt disagree.

Another thing I admire here is the author's willingness to give one female character the sort of appetites and behaviours normally associated with promiscuous males. This works very well and brings a dimension of reality that many novels lack. The intimate passages otherwise are contextual, clear and not heavily dwelt on. One line: 'They had sex fast and furiously on the shag pile.' instantly joined my list of all time favourites.

Recommended, and I suspect anyoine enjoying this will also snatch up Susan's latest. (less)

I enjoyed this book and its many stories. Several nights, I stayed up reading later than I intended, just because I was so drawn into the storyline of whichever person was in the spotlight at that point in the book.

For a newly-published writer, Susan did lots of things very well. She juggled and wove together an extensive cast of very different people, portrayed in detail. She explained their motivations and idiosyncracies vividly. It's the type of book that makes you think again before judging strangers in the street, wondering about their back stories.

It was also good to read a story set (mostly) in Scotland in modern times. Married to a Scot, I know it pretty well and enjoyed the geographical references. (That was one reason I bought the book.) It was good also to see immigrants woven into the story in a very positive way.

I became fond of a lot of the characters and I especially liked the surprises in some of the sub-plots - but I won't go into those here for fear of spoiling it for you.

Another thing I liked was the cover design, which may seem an odd thing to mention, but it's always good to see a self-published novel with a cover that would look at home alongside commercial bestsellers on the shelves of bookshops. I thought this cover was attractive, strong, intriguing and set the tone well for the content.

I can understand why those who have given it lower ratings were irritated by grammatical errors, typos and the odd unfortunate phrase, but I think they should cut the author a little slack here. If the book had received the professional proof-reading and sub-editing service enjoyed by mainstream authors, at their publishers' expense, these would have been eliminated. Even Roald Dahl was a terrible speller, you know, and relied on his publishers' services to knock his manuscripts into readable form. I hope their criticisms don't deter Susan's ambition - and I hope that having sold so many copies, she'll now be able to buy in these luxuries before publication of her next book. She certainly deserves them.

If Susan Buchanan ever writes any books or stories targetting with a smaller cast and canvas, I'd be especially interested to read them, as I think with more time and effort to bestow on each individual, her work would be even better.(less)

This took me awhile to get through. It was journey in more ways than one. At first I thought it was just a simple story about Holly and her relationships, but it really grew on me as the chapters flew by. I seemed to identify with each one. I took care of my mom when she was I'll, so that chapter was so touching for me, it brought up some memories that I had forgotten for a long time.

I loved the premise for this novel before I even started it; the idea of twelve characters based around the twelve signs of the zodiac. This is an outstanding debut novel. Most first novels read like first novels, but Sign of the Times is obviously a labour of love that the author has worked on with passion. I received this book from the author for which I'm very grateful. I started reading it straight away and was immediately drawn in to the story.

I downloaded this book as I was intrigued by the concept of twelve characters representing the twelve signs of the zodiac. The concept worked well and I enjoyed how the twelve characters came in and out of each others lives, sometimes unexpectedly. I picked this up on Kindle as Sooz, the author, tweeted me along with a few others when she had a day that she was giving it away free on Amazon. (It’s now only £1.98 so wont break the bank!)

The sign of the Times is a very well written book and a lot of thought has been given to each of the characters.

This book has a lot of characters with a story of their own to tell. Just when you are getting into the story and WANTING to know what happens next, the story starts on to the next characters story. Very neat idea to use zodiac signs to make characters and I do like the switching POV so the reader can see different aspects of the story. The only things I wish were done differently is the book actually be made into a series so I could know more about the characters and what happened! The moment I started reading "Sign of the Times," I knew I was going to love it. To create 12 characters, cleverly based on their astrological signs, and keep the reader hooked on each one is incredibly difficult. I have the utmost admiration for Susan Buchanan and the amount of work that went into writing this novel. The intertwining of characters' lives reminded me of the beloved Maeve Binchy, and I was sad when I turned the last page. I cannot wait for "The Dating Game" to come out.
